Today's video, #83, I cut down a large dead ash tree that did not go the way I wanted. And after it was down, I realize it could have gone much worse. This is the tree that I talked about and showed in video #71, last fall. It was a dead ash, that at the time was still a little alive. But the winter looked like it was rough on the tree as it was worse that I remembered. Several things contributed to make this tree tricky and dangerous to cut. Watch along to see how bad it could have been and how it did turn out.

Yes, much worse than I thought it would be. As I mentioned in the video, I'm surprised it was still standing. Thanks for watching!

Hey Derrick, looks as though I’ve missed a few of your most recent vids☹️ I gotta get caught back up! As you already know, a bore cut can minimize the likelihood of barberchair. Now you have two instances fairly close to one another that would have likely benefited from that tactic... I’m not try’n to be a know it all, more like a coach who is reminding you of what you already know. Cat-like reflexes will only get us so far. Nowadays I’m try’n to utilize techniques over luck and adrenaline! I got swatted by a Ash tree that failed to submit to my will about ten years ago. Not hard enough to cause serious injury, just hard enough to make me realize how close my family could have been to collecting on my life insurance policy🤔. If you’re not confident in your bore cut abilities, check out nuts319 on KZbin. He bore cuts almost everything he drops and he is a serious production cutter. He does it partly because he’s trying to leave a small hinge and wants minimal fiber pull. He also has a series titled Species Specific Tips and Tricks🤔. Not being critical, just wanting you to continue to be a great dad and KZbinr for many years to come😉 Easter Bless’ns to ya, Tedd

Bore cut couldn’t help this tree. No pull wood whene it’s potting mix in the center.

@@ericharris893 :: My typical approach to a rotten stem is to leave some of the shell towards the back to hold it, rather than remove that possibility completely with a conventional back cut.

Good discussion guys. I am definitely not professional by any means. Just a regular guy with a chainsaw and a camera. Most easy trees I can read and take down no problem. But these iffy trees I run through my head 100s of times of how I should do things. So the coaching is always welcomed. The first tree that barberchaired was a fairly straight, solid white oak that I just misjudged how much weight the was on one side. I'm still baffled that it did that. I've used the bore cut many times on hard leaners. But on straight one like that, I didn't think I would have to. But like you said, I've watched nuts319 bore cut everything. I can only think of one other tree that barberchaired on me and that was years ago when I was green and didn't know what I was doing. So I may start bore cutting more just out of precaution. This ash tree though, I'm not surprised one bit it did what it did. The thing was absolutely terrible. If I had known it was that bad, I probably wouldn't have cut it. Again, maybe a bad read on my part, but I'm not sure a bore cut would have kept this tree together. But who knows. Again, I appreciate the discussion guys as it all helps to make me better in the wood. Everyone stay safe out there.
