I played 3 sets of forged MacGregor irons in the early 70’s through to the 80’s! All blades (no CB’s when I started playing in 1970 and BIG Jack Nicklaus fan!) I got to scratch with them at 16, loved them and would love to see them come back to the place they held!

Thanks for your reply, James! Love your channel! MacGregor Golf in the US has the MT-86 OS which is a foam filled hollow body club. It received a Silver rating from Golf Digest in their 2023 Hot List Iron Review. It is like the Takomo 101. They also have a MT-86 Pro which is a smaller head like the Takomo 101T. They have the winged muscle back shape like the old M85. They recently have come out with forged cavity backs similar to Takomo 301 CBs. It's direct to consumer: fully assembled or just heads if you want to build your own. They are priced lower than the OEMs but more expensive than Takomo. They are not listed on the MacGregor UK site. I have no connection to MacGregor just passing this on for your info. MacGregor in the US is owned by entrepreneur Simon Millington thru Golf Brands Inc. He also has Ben Hogan Golf, Ram Golf, Zebra Golf, & Teardrop Golf. Ben Hogan Golf is back to DTC fully assembled clubs or heads if you so desire. Check out their websites. Still using my MacGregor's I bought in the early 90's. Never seen a reason to change, still work great. Looking at their new MT-Pro irons has me tempted though. Need to see some reviews of them, but they look fantastic. Sad MacGregor disappeared for a while, but exciting to see them back and delivering the goods at a good price too.

Yes, Jack used to play the clubs he designed. I attended tour events and verified his use of factory clubs. Sure, he no doubt tailored the clubs for his use as all players should. As a rule, Macgregors were generally unforgiving with a narrow sweet spot. All of this forces one to practice their swing to achieve consistent results. I am going to say this, the innovations in equipment basically created professional phenoms. If these modern players had played with the same equipment as Snead, Hogan, Palmer, Player, Trevino and Nicklaus, they would not even make the cut. Don’t believe me, then go out and buy some classic equipment and play balata balls and get back with me. Jack is the goat. Tiger had a technical advantage. Take those balls away and what do you have? I think Macgregors suffered from what all of these companies suffer from, stockholders.

When I used to caddy at the nearest country club, back in the early 90’s, even the most ultra wealthy members (that should’ve been using the best irons they could find for their game), used MacGregor clubs. Irons especially. It wasn’t until about 92-93 when we started seeing bigger clubs like the Jumbo or the original Big Bertha from Callaway. And even then it was pretty rare to see them in a members bag. These guys could buy any golf clubs they wanted, but back then they’d play the same irons they had since the early 80’s a lot of the time. We had a few guys that had the Ping Eye 2’s and the Tommy Armour 845’s (which I used in high school). But the vast majority of players back then used clubs that you’d find at garage sales for $10 for the set these days. Amazing how far technology has brought us.

I used a MacGregor Eye-O-Matic Persimmon Driver, 3 Wood and 4 Wood for quite a long time. They were fantastic woods, which I have now refinished and displayed them. Unfortunately, my left leg and lower back have ended my playing days, but I love watching your channel. I can say that my last round of golf was my best ever, shooting a 5 under par 67, in my wife's company golf outing! 5 birdies and 13 pars. Thanks for such a great YT Channel!

As long as the big companies spend a ton on R&D, Tour players and nstional advertising their priced will continue to to climb. I myself won't spend the money on new equipment that loses half it's value as soon as you hit a ball with it. The McGregor clubs look enticing but I wish the driver had flex option instead of just R flex !

I've gone back to lynx irons as I had my first set of iron about 45 years ago off a pro at Selby called David Jagger think it was his own set anyhow best gold I played was with them so I thought I'd give lynx ago again and yes still good My dad played with Mcgregor wouldn't play with anything else great name in golf

Save a bit more money and buy a 2nd hand Titleist U510, it's brilliant, btw I've got an original Jack Nicklaus Muirfield 2 iron from the late 1970s and now that's a stunning looking iron from the days when MacGregor could make clubs - not these budget ones ⛳
