My main issue isn't with the style, it's mostly with the gameplay. I really like the designs of some of the bosses (like that evil cow and the musician). The gameplay looks a bit too similar in some aspects such as the dashing, EX moves and just shooting in general.

It's noticeably more than a reskin. This aims so much higher, it's clear there's love in the concepts and the effort, cyborg cow aliens feels like something I could have watched years ago. They shouldn't be discouraged here, but anyone else should watch carefully and consider other retro art styles going forward.

@@angel_of_rust the problem isn't that "it has dashes", I know many other games have similar mechanics to cuphead, but it's that enchanted portals has so many mechanics and characteristics that also appear in cuphead that you cannot say it's not very heavily inspired to the point that we cpuld say it's a copy. Bendy has a style inspired by '30s cartoons, but it's a whole different genre with other completely unique mechanics. Cuphead has similar mechanics to megaman but the two also have enough differences to say that cuphead is not a megaman copy. Enchanted portals has just a different plot and different bosses, maybe a few different weapon concepts, but the rest just has too many similarities with cuphead

Honestly, as long as they add or twist some mechanics from Cuphead, I'd be enthusiastic about it. Cuphead took a lot of work from its creators, so seeing another studio put all their heart into imitating such a cool game is really optimistic imo.

The gameplay looks exactly the same with nothing new added or no new twists or changes to make it new or unique. The bosses are a bit too similar to Cuphead’s designs for a good number of them. To be fair, the "plagiarism" thing is the only thing that doesn't bother me at first sight. Remember that Minecraft started as a clone of a game called Infiniminer down to the mechanics. in my humble opinion, if Cuphead represents the animation of the 30s, Enchanted Portals may represent the animations from the 40s to the early 70s. Except that the animations of EP are 100% digital, in contrast to Cuphead's traditional animation.

Thing is Minecraft is the kind of game that takes 20 million updates to be finished giving it tons of time to change and become more original, while I'd be supprised if anything was added to this game past a bugfix or two, once it's finished, and as it is now, it has the exact same mechanics, gameplay and barely different artstyle, they are adding everything at once and most likely going to throw it away and move on to life or another project as soon as it's finished.

Honestly, there are a few others with the same "boss rush, bullet-hell platformer" as Cuphead, so I'm not blaming them for the layout. The story is completely original from what I can tell, and the animation and style of art are also obviously inspired by Cuphead but also have it's own spin on it. Up until here, it's just a game in the same *genre* as Cuphead. However, I draw the line at how you attack. It's a direct copy at this point, with the "snap-and-shoot" pulled directly from Cuphead. The little EX move I saw, with the glove, actually DOES look very original. If they can improve this attacking system, perhaps using something like different kinds of spells shot out of wands, bound to different keys, would make sense. That's really the only thing holding it at the "ripoff" category.

You're right. Does it have original bosses? Yep. An original plot and story? Seems like it. You can't copyright game mechanics for a "shoot em up" game. The games art style is a way of bringing back an old art style that would have been lost to time. More games should be made with similar art style, but respecting the artists creative integrity.

No one expects shooters to be unique. When you make a generic shooter it's not copying any other game, it's just generic. Cuphead though, is VERY unique, so making something that looks like the game with modded in sprites and calling it your own game IS copying.

The story is completely different, the bosses are new and have much different designs, the areas are (most likely) different, and more. You can't simply call it a clone based solely off the mechanics and the art style (again, cuphead doesn't own the rights to it. Anyone is allowed to use it for their game.)

In all seriousness I don’t think that these people are trying to infringe on the Cuphead brand and that they are looking for money because the amount of effort and creativity in this one trailer disproves it because this process is extremely expensive They’re probably some indie developers that really like Cuphead and thought hey I would love to expand on it and add my own bosses and ideas and when I even think about this I would usually just leave a comment hoping that people would read it but these people with such a small budget made an entire game with the love of Cuphead keeping them going knowing full well that the criticism would come in but at this point I find it extremely ridiculous with people saying problems that aren’t even there in the game the animation looks really good with some problems like it looking stiff in some places and some of the backgrounds looking kind of bad but the rest of it so far is amazing and by just looking at it for the 3rd time noticing little details and mechanics Cuphead never had I personally believe that even if it is really really similar to Cuphead I feel we need to take a break from bashing it already and I am glad to fund this project and I hope that many others would too

So what? Castlevania and ninja Gaiden on the NES were very similar. Both side scrollers. Both use melee weapons. Both can jump. Both has sub weapons you can get. Both activate the sub weapons by pressing up and the b button. Both collect ammo for the weapons. Both are timed. Both have life meters that are identical. 16 units for both player and enemy. Both have a number of guys before game over. Levels are separated into sub sections. Each ends in a boss fight. After each boss fight you get a tally of your time and ammo left. Both allows the player to hit stationary background objects to get items. Both make you jump back when you get hit. Both have bats, birds and cats attack you. All player stats are at he top of the screen. Ninja gaiden runs a little faster and attempts at a weird 3D background style and has cut scenes, but at their core, they are the same game. Even the art style is some what similar. But ninja gaiden is an evolution of what castlevania did before. And really, this game is using an art style not owned by the developers of cup head. The cartoonists from the 1930’s are the originators. So what’s the big deal?

I think it looks like a lot of fun. Cuphead was amazing, and I think this is different enough that even though the art style is very similar, it's got it's own feel enough to not be a ripoff.
