Years ago i was a cake decorator and I had a customer ask for a refund for a cake already served to the party because there was too much cake. His wife and daughter had ordered the cake with as many servings as they wanted, but he claimed the fact that guests didn't eat the giant pieces they were served warranted him a refund. He brought the leftovers, and I told him those were clearly too large, being twice our suggested size. The store manager gave him store credit as his refund. Ridiculous.

I don't think many custom cake shops accept the extra small cake orders - cutting off 50% of the cake is a huge waste for you.

My mom has trouble with too much of anything. She’s always afraid of over ordering or having anything left over at parties, etc. It led to a few times where there wasn’t enough, once at my 7th bday where she made me give my piece of cake to a party guest so as not to be rude. It gave me a complex as an adult that I order more than enough so everyone gets as much as they want. Yes we have leftovers, but no one goes without and so far nobody’s died. Edited to add: I don’t think she was a bad mom. It’s one of those moments where as a parent you have to handle the situation and do what you can to get by. But as a child I didn’t have the understanding to see that, and it did affect me down the line on making sure everyone had enough. I don’t think what she did was intentional (i know there are parents that do behave this way on purpose and that is truly awful!) But I’m trying to hold space for how I felt too and what that resulted in. Also to add to those panicked over tossing leftovers or being wasteful: Look to the corporations wasting billions of pounds of food a year to shake your fists at. Tossing a bit of leftover cake isn’t nearly as wasteful as what the agricultural industry or food manufacturers are doing. Let’s pick our battles.

During covid 2020 we went away to a beach hotel in our own town for our anniversary as we were not allowed out of the area. I ordered a carrot cake in a heart shape with orange icing & writing on it for my darling husband. When I picked it up it was big & heavy , most likely big enough to feed 20 😂 Was only for us so I froze a lot of it. Sadly my husband died January 2022 & I ended up eating the last of it. I hadn't thought to ask for a small one but never complained & gave them a good review

6 inches refers to the diameter. She knew how big 6 inches was, she just wasn't clear about how tall the cake is, she didn't clarify that she meant height. They usually only have one height of cake and usually don't have to think about height, so it doesn't even occur to them to consider other dimensions. Customer meant shorter cake, but used a word that was confusing to someone who trained to think in terms of diameter.

The good thing about no longer working in a grocery store bakery, and doing things on the side, I don't have to deal with difficult people, if I get the sense that someone will be a pain, I don't have to take an order from them. I took so much abuse from people when I worked in the grocery store bakery. They were happy at the counter, saying everything is what they asked for, by the time they walked to the front to pay, I was an idiot, couldn't get the colors right, the flavor was wrong, blah, blah, blah, yet still wanted the cake, but wanted it for free! I remembered those people, remembered the faces, kept the order with the name and phone number in my file, 6 months later, they're back to order a cake! I sternly tell them "I'm not able to do cakes to your satisfaction, remember?? I'm not able to follow your instructions according to your remarks to the manager remember?? I think _____ grocery store would be better to accommodate you! How they quickly deny they said that to the manager until you show the old order with THEIR name and number, and child's name! Never do cakes in someone else's bakery, do it yourself, be your own boss.

At my job, so many people say they want a full sheet cake because they know they need something bigger then an 8” round. Policy is we have to literally say “do you know how big a full sheet is? It feeds at least 60 people” Usually they just need a quarter sheet, but all flat rectangles are full sheets to customers.

Whatever wish a customer may have is up to them, but it is also up to them to convey that wish clearly. If she wanted it to be lower, she should have been clear about that.

She did convey it. Normal cakes are maybe 4 inches tall. The customer went with that and said, "I want a small cake please". What did the baker do? Make the cake 12 inches tall. That's a whole foot, that could be 1/5th of the customer's height. The customer did convey what she wanted, multiple times. And the baker didn't listen. And to top it off, the baker now blasts this perfectly reasonable customer online for views!

That’s the style for this particular trend. Raw edges, pretty piping on top of the layers. Kind of like that trend to half cover the sides in buttercream, with some of the cake showing through.

I totally get this though! She definitely didn’t describe what she wanted properly but I prefer shorter cakes. I hate when my cakes are the size of sky scrapers lol plus it’s a terrible time to try and cut usually. I’d prefer a shorter one and for the price to reflect that.

​@lnk but if a Baker does a standard size then there's not too much you can do about it. It takes a lot of gas energy to bake. A bakery can save a lot of money by making 6 big cakes rather than 14 little cakes. If you're not a big eater, you should opt for something like cupcakes, where it's easier to just buy your servings/ servings for guests. Having leftover food is such a non problem with an easy solution.

It takes time and energy to customize cakes especially if it goes above or below standard size so she deserves to be charged the same. For example, when I make a cake and someone wants smaller than standard size, that can be tough depending what they are asking because what do you want me to do, use 1 and a HALF eggs?? And by their measurements that means I'm shaving off a bunch of cake and wasting it and it's just not worth it and not worth buying a bunch of custom cake pans for everyone or just one person

I've met many of these types of people in retail in my past. And in vacation rentals. Indecisive, annoying, entitled and always looking to lay the blame so they can get a free handout....even if it puts somebody else out . I would refuse to work with her again. Beautiful cake by the way!
