Do It Yourself!!! may seem like just another cog in the moe girl anime machine but in actuality, it is one of a few series that is helping to change the dynamic of the sub-genre.

I'm thrilled to hear that the "cute girls doing cute things" genre is being reclaimed and more tailored to the feminine gaze! I am optimistic for a similar thing happening to the isekai genre because of the popularity of otome isekai anime that have come out lately.

Idk what the "female gaze" is but back in the early days of anime most isakai was tailored towards females. Inuyasha being the most known one.

@@someuser4166 Basically what I meant by the feminine gaze is that more animes are being produced with a female audience in mind. Which is a welcome change as this audience has been severely neglected! And you are so right that isekai going back towards having a female audience in mind is a reflection of the genre's history. I would love to see more shows like Inuyasha get made again. I'm still heartbroken that Yona of the Dawn got such a short anime run 💔 😢

@@sugarzblossom8168 10 days late but yes, Inuyasha is listed as a shounen manga/anime. But I as an audience can't help but think it's closer to shoujo especially in the romance department (which isn't a bad thing btw).

Just realized I forgot mention best girl Jobko! She is a literally one of the best characters of the show. Anywho….What would you most want to see next on this topic? A recommendation video on the best CGDCT anime or a deep dive into the why cute girls in anime exist? I’m working on a couple of videos diving into Bishounen (pretty boys) in anime that will be coming out next so stay tuned!

I love and have watched all the ones you mentioned plus Kiniro Mosaic, Love Live, Girls' Last Tour. It would be interesting if you could talk about why the friendships in these cute shows work and how they become so memorable/rewatchable!

A dive into the cute girls doing cute things would surely be interesting!! Also gakkou gurashi would be kinda subversion of it? Like there're the cute girls having fun but the colorful scenery is all on the mc's mind as a scapism to their apocalypse zombie reality (kind like a metaphor for the audience that also see this type of anime for relaxing?) This scene sumarises the anime well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoSkpnloqc1qm9U

I really enjoy DIY, it's really refreshing to have something as a palate cleanser after some of this more Shounen series that are really popular right now. I hadn't considered it to be a cute girls doing cute things anime, I didn't even recognize that there aren't male characters in the series until you said it. I enjoy the aspect that it really says there is a place for everyone, and the friendships they build, but I also recognize this is probably a product of who I am. I really like your perspective.

I really love this type of anime, not only because it's really relaxing but because it's also very enjoyable to see girls sharing passions together and dedicating time for this. It really changes from some popular anime/manga that always depicts male povs and reduces female characters to their relationships with men. Also i know it's criticized quite a bit but i really love My Dress Up Darling for this aspect of sharing hobbies and passions and getting invested in them without shame, but it does have this romance aspect that comes around. I don't think it's bad but it's quite nice to see girls being represented by other things than their romantic relationships.

Reminds me of how I need to learn to accept a life lived without a wife. I have so much more to live for than a romantic relation; I just need to make my subconcious agree.

When I was in Japan in 2007 it was surprised WHO was reading Manga of that genre! My colleagues who went fantatic to the gym being muscle men. As more muscles they had trained as more cutier and kiddier the manga and anime were they read. They were nearly all hyped on Lucky star. On the other hand my 60 year old landlady who looked like a lovely tiny grandma liked to read samurai manga with bonage and sado-maso stuff.

It always interests me that people who read paper books can shamelessly show the public what they're reading, if they want to! Like, maybe they're trying to tell us something. I always read e-books for the convenience, but also, I'm often glad the world can't see a grown woman reading manga, or my intellectual image isn't tarnished by the trashy novel I'm reading! 😄 Your comment made me realize once again that books are a private world where people can go, not just to escape, but also to more fully be themselves.

@@niceclaup1 Don't forget that was 15 years ago. But you got those pulp paper books anywhere even from vending machines at the station. Besides the bondage stuff many women read Boylove manga. Why? To show romantic feelings was always "propriate" in Japan. No, they weren't. Emotions were seen as a weakness.

If I remember correctly Lucky star was in a weekly magazine but later came out as an anime. Others liked manga like "Oh my Goddess!"

I have big anxiety and iyashikei is an important coping tool. There's a lot of overlap between it and CGDCT. I also don't care much about dude protagonists. (There are exceptions; looking at you, Tanaka-kun.) I've exhausted a lot of the online lists of iyashikei; I'd love to hear a list of your favorite soothing, calming, healing, chillout shows. Especially stuff that's adjacent to expected genre favorites!

I'm not to big a fan of slice of life stuff but I really like the art style of this show, some of the character designs and I also enjoy building stuff irl so that had me interested as well. The pet / animal characters are also really cute so that's a plus as well.

DIY had surprisingly deep themes in the setting. The idea of hand craft being pushed away by computer tech, while the tech students are stressed out trying to prove themselves but the DIY girls are free to vibe and build friendships. My inner Marxist was happy. Also the art and animation was quietly very beautiful. Just a charming, well made, and thoughtful example of cgdct.

One of the things I really enjoy about newer cgdct style anime (and manga) is that I think we're really starting to see more character driven works, and works with depth of story or world that you wouldn't expect. A great example of this is The Demon Girl Next Door (which I highly recommend) where basically this story that seems like a typical slice of life gag comedy, but as the series progresses there are really well made character arcs and the world becomes more fleshed out, to the point that it feels more like a fantastical mystery/adventure series that happens to also be a gag comedy on the side. In general I think people are using the model of "cute girls doing X" as a base to tell more diverse and nuanced stories that might not get traction in other circles if they were directly competing with the typical shounen blockbusters.

There have been a load of good CGDCT anime in recent seasons. Bocchi, Do It Yourself, Yama no Susume Next Summit, Yuru Camp, and Slow Loop are all worth the watch. They are all quality shows that don't play into some of the trashier tropes you see in these sorts of anime at times. I think perhaps it might be worth noting that most of the better CGDCT that don't abuse trashy tropes fall into the iyashikei subgenre of slice of life. For instance, all of the titles I mentioned above other than Bocchi could be considered iyashikei.

for the isekai genre, i recommend you watch Honzuki no gekokujou (Ascendance of a bookworm) It's a really promising political series told from the eyes of a young girl. Best of all it has 3 seasons already with lots of hope that more will come. What's more good that it's free from fanservice!
