Back in the 1980s and 1990s (Indian).. if even a contraceptives' advert (especially latex ones, but even the hormone pills) would suddenly come on TV.. ..elder menfolk/father would act as if reading the newspaper or we kids and them too would suddenly recollect chores to do or toilet breaks and mom would often remember some work in the kitchen. . Like basically no eye to eye contact for few.minutes. . Old era tech.. no TV remote.. nobody wanting to take the plunge to go up to the television set to change or switch it off. . And anyway.. at that time there was only State TV. And duch Ads were of the Health ministry or Dept. itself and would thus be played during msin programs or movie broadcasts. Thus no use switching between national station amd regional channel... as ALL would have THE SAME broadcast.
