The “no after care” is what broke and damaged your locs it sucks on loose hair but in locs the product Penetrates and HAS to be completely washed out so it may take some time and use a neutralizing shampoo that does the color change so you can be sure that all the lightener is out. Your hair was probably over processed as well. then you must do a protein treatment and steam them and be consistent , redken, Nairobi and design essentials have for protein treatments and rice water serves as a protein as well. Good luck love

sheena davis I agree... once I seen the 40 developer and she said she put it up in s bun and didn’t touch it I knew it was a done deal. VHR yeah you’re right about the steam lol i don’t steam much (besides the shower) but i was thinking steam after a few protein treatments to help reestablish some hydration (i should’ve been more clear my bad lol) but i think there are a lot of license stylist that makes the mistake at the shampoo bowl (poor shampooing) it’s so easy to over process hair with these chemical treatment (Lordt have i seen a lot of damage on people ) that are not properly shampooed out. She could’ve still had “bleach” deeply in there and it just kept processing smh. I’m only 3 months in with my locs and i colored my hair before i loc’d but i still do a protein every 6 weeks

Nina, I am a colorist of 10 years. The mistake was using 40 volume on your locs. This was completely UNNECESSARY given your desired result. Your level vs the desired level of lightness is a difference of 2-3 levels. 20 volume would have more than sufficed with color or with (bleach for less than 15 mins). My advice is to go to a colorist and nota Stylist when having color done. Color theory and formulation and implementing knowledge in this area repeatedly is necessary in not making these poor choices as a cosmetologist. Sorry this happened. Btw- I have colored healthy locs.

You have to give it water. Use rose water and vitamin E oil. Mist your locs daily squeeze the rose water in your locs to make sure it penetrate it. Do not use a dryer. I have always said that. Any colour added to hair changes the hair texture. I have experimented with hair colour over the years but have come to realise that initially your hair looks nice. Complements galore. But in the cold light of you maintaing your hair, you find that your hair texture has totally changed. My texture change was on natural hair. It was then that I decided that my natural God given hair colour was the best. However one thing I did find was that if you wash your natural hair with colour shampoo and colour conditioner. Even though your hair is not coloured. The colour shampoo/conditioner brings out the natural colour of your hair and gives it a vibrant shine.

I totally understand- my first locks I dyed them for a long time. I did cut them to about an inch because my scalp hurt, the hair was weak and I did not know what else to do. About 15 years later I have locs that are thriving- no color- they are beautiful & healthy. Love your hair and it will work out!
@niecyallison17065 жыл бұрын
You say you don't want to blame the stylist but it was the stylist fault for using that high of a volume of peroxide on your hair. You wanted to lighten your hair almost 7 shades and 20 vol would have been more than enough. Your hair was over-processed that's why it felt like dried straw. No matter how much moisure you gave your hair once it's over-processed your hair will fall out.

I have boxed colored my hair twice and bleached it once on the ends. I feel like people go wrong with the bleach because you using that 40 developer. It’s way to strong for our hair.. 20 or 30 max is the strongest I would ever go. The box color is good for covering Greys or just to add a little boost or brighter to the hair. If you do any chemical treatment to locs deep conditioning is gonna have to be a mandatory regimen. Protein treatments, steam, rose water and oil have helped me maintain my locs well and I have had color since I started locs. I’ve had locs and color 14 months. I have 4b-4c hair that is fine. And could never keep color loose natural.. but my locs flourish now. I use rose water every day... if you don’t keep your hair moisturized... it will begin to fall, shed, become weak, thin ect. You can’t color it and just leave it alone..

Thank you so much for sharing your journey for being vulnerable with us. I just had highlights added to my locs a couple of days ago and had some of my tips bleached as well. I’m terrified of them drying out and am concerned that even if I stay on top of keeping them moisturized they will still be damaged and may break off, especially the bleached ones.
@kyjondhayeeloy57055 жыл бұрын
Part of the issue is using too strong a developer, always better to use a lower volume which takes a bit longer to lighten but it’s less damaging. Also with colour, you have to moisturize because the hair is dryer so 3 weeks with absolutely nothing done will cause further damage. Another thing is to find a professional who incorporates Olaplex into their services, it’s a bond rebuilder and it maintains the integrity of the hair even while it being coloured. It can also be used as a stand alone treatment so maybe you can locate someone who can do it for you and you would see an improvement in your locks.

Going through this right now. Stylist used a 20 developer, and the resulting color wasn't even all that light ( a dark honey brown). In the end I had bone dry, crispy ends, and I can see that over time the colored part of my locs have slowly broken off. I not cutting off these locs, though. They are the perfect size and shape!!😅 I'm just being patient, and slowly trimming the colored areas as my locs grow back out. So happy I didn't color my entire head!!!
@Notdoingittoday5 жыл бұрын
Will you trim and do conditioning treatments as you go? Maybe your colorist can do a deep conditioning treatment and put a clear rinse over the over-processed area? Hot oil treatments won’t do the trick. You really need a filler to fill in the damage to prevent further breakage. I recommend a protein-based conditioner or clear semi permanent color.

I agree with some of the comments. Having locs amd then using a 40 volume then no type of conditioning afterwards was not a good combo. Maybe next time lightening a little at a time over the course of a month or 2 and moisturizing in between??? But it does just depend on the person's hair. Some women keep color on their locs and they dont break off like that, me I know my hair would probably react the same as yours if I color it more than once with anything besides a rinse. I've already had one loc the end unraveled and the hair was just broken and I just had to cut it off it that's without any color, it was just unhealthy hair i didn't trim properly when I first started my locs.

Sorry you experienced this. I’ve had locs for almost 20 years and I think I’ve colored for 10 of those on a regular basis. I love being able to switch up my color. I’ll color my hair repeatedly over that least 2-4x a year . And I haven’t had any issues, except dryness but that’s mostly due to the fact I’m a little negligent when it comes to moisturizing. But when I’m consistent do I follow Yannie the locologist (she’s on YT and FB) method of using use a rose water and Vitamin E mix. FYI I’ve used boxed dyes (Creme of Nature, Dark and Lovely, Loreal), Henna, and I recently used Bigen because greys stopped responded to my usual color. 40 volume was definitely unnecessary for your hair IMO. Look into Adore colors they are semi permanent and some people have a lot of success with it.

Yes, it is the unfortunate truth! I also lightened my locs at the ends for the ombré effect, and about 5 months later, my sealed locs began unraveling at the ends. The bleach changed my hair texture tremendously, and after they started unraveling, I could see them trying to re-loc, but my ends were dry. The ends became weak like spaghetti noodles. If I pulled at the end of my locs, I could hear it ripping🤦♀️. My loctitian told me not to pull them because it would mess up the integrity of my locs. Long story short, I had to cut off all of the colored ends of my hair. I lost about a years worth of growth/length, and my feelings were really hurt 😞! I know that some of us can lighten our hair and nothing bad happens, but that was not the case for me. I figured since my hair was healthy and all natural, I could handle a little lightening, but nope! I will never do it again, glad I only did my ends, and will try to discourage anyone who asks me about lightening their locs. I suggest using rinses, and maybe even yarn, or loc jewelry, to add a like something to your locs, but bleaching definitely damaged my hair! Great video and warning!

I literally had the same experience! :( Bleached my hair 2 years ago (after a previous bleach 2 years prior) and my locs started weakening too. Like i would have weak spots 2 or 3 inches from the ends. I would see little tufts of hair left in the shower after a wash. At first I thought if I increased my moisturization routine and hot oil treatments it would help. But nah. Finally I decided to trim my ends for the first time last week, cutting off 3 1/2 inches (it was needed anyway bc of a ton of lint buildup, double ends from combining, and uneven ends). My locs feel and look so much healthier, lighter, and I love the "chopped" look more than I thought I would. Kinda feels like a reset on my hair and I forgot how cute shorter locs are (now I'm at 12 inches). I say all that to say maybe try a small trim? Or try interlocking those weak spots? If nothing else it might relieve some of the stress on the weak spots bc of the weight? Thanks for sharing your experience! I was embarrassed thinking I was the only one suffering from this.

If I lighten locs with a box dye like Dark & Lovely will it have the same negative affect. Is that safe to use?
@SincerePresence5 жыл бұрын
Oh no! I planned on lightening tomorrow. Question: was your locs oiled a day or so before getting them done?

I did a box dye twice same color , on my locks and over time there are strands of straight hairs poking out my locks ... never again

I have a box dye horror story (I shouldn't have did it😂) I bleached them myself and applied all the bleach to all my hair and did the process TWICE. It obviously gave me hot roots but because locs are so heavy the hair on my scalp just started breaking off and whole locs fell out. I had to cut my all my locs off after 4 years of growing them, still regret it to this day. I'm now 2,5 years into a new set, my hair is gorgeous and healthy and when I'm craving colour I go pitch black or blue-black.

Same thing with me. I had my locs lightened and colored over 2 years ago and I’m still paying for it. The color is fantastic but a lot of my ends ended up breaking off. My damage also goes back to before I started my locs. I had only lightened one side of my hair going for the half and half look. Since then that side of my hair has experienced more breakage than the other. It’s maybe only noticeable to me but I can see it 😭

I will never color my locs and I think that the people who do are in denial when it comes to the health of their hair. If you don't see the damage now, you will see it in the future. My advice is if you made the decision to have locs then appreciate it for what it is and stop trying to alter it otherwise its not for you...our hair is not meant to be that way, ijs🤷🏿♀️

See I really really want to dye my locs purple at some point. Is there anyway to do this without lightening my hair? My hair is brown.

Dye is ok for me but bleach made it drier than ever 😂 You have to really be on top of your moisturizing and deep conditioning with colored locs

I've had no problem with my locs. My loctician had colored my hair and I color my locs with Cream of Nature and my locs are still soft.

Do you think getting my locs dyed red will damage them no matter what I do ?
@NinaUnlocked5 жыл бұрын
I think so. Any time you have to lift the color, you’re pretty much asking for it. 😩 It doesn’t mean you can’t do it, but just be prepared.
@MothLand5 жыл бұрын
You can use natural henna to add a red undertone to unbleached hair or natural indigo to add a faint blue/green undertone. That's about as much as you can do with locs and color healthiliy. Until you go grey/white as least

Bugged_Out_Frankie so definitely not dye? Wanted to dye the ends red next week
