I think this was honestly a classic literary mistake. Some people uses quotations to (incorrectly) provide a sense of emphasis. I'm not defending them for that decision, but it's entirely possible they didn't know how to use quotations properly.

If I'm not mistaken, I think they do that because they're trying not to give a stance on the subject. News tries to come off as 'impartial', so they use the quotes to basically show that they're literally quoting other people, and it's not a direct statement/opinion of the media outlet that is reporting the news.

I just wish black villains could be treated like normal villains. If the author wanted to tackle tension between East Asian communities and African/African American communities they could have done so without making the one black character to be treated like a caricature. It just adds fuel to the fire, and makes me feel like the author never planned on a resolution-just wanted to express some deep-seated hate. Man, just when I was gonna pick it back up again😭 Its a shame cause as someone who read this webtoon a lot, it tackled serious problems in Korea like underage criminals getting away with horrendous crimes and bragging about it on social media, child abuse, real life bully cases, students being bullied by their teachers who are paid to give exam answer sheets to rich parents, runaway abused teens being sold into prostitution against their will, parents tormenting teachers past work hours, etc. Did not see this racist chapter coming but I’m honestly not surprised. I heard from black residents in Korea and Japan that they have a racism and appropriation problem there. I've briefly lived in Malaysia so I can't speak for the rest of the Asian countries however, it's true that there is a loose use of the N word amongst certain people. @@kevanphobic oh I get what u are saying but personally, the term "not being normal" doesn't mean a bad thing to me all the time. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that the term normal is limited to specific communities or cultural groups. Some things considered normal in South Korean would definitely not be considered normal in some parts of Africa. Of course, there is a broad general understanding of "normal" or rather "acceptable" with the law and certain moral guidelines like greeting elders with respect but whoever goes the non-violent and immoral route isn't necessarily bad. Though of course using the "N" word - while I understand that the creators were trying to vocalise the issues in South Korea from bullying, discrimination and racism - didn't give them the pass to use the N word.

For Koreans, they get a range of handsome to ugly depictions to show how diverse their ethnicity can be. By having only one black character, the artist provides only one representation of black people for black readers and all readers in general, and it sends the message that all (or at least, a large majority of) black people are similarly off putting and rude/deserving if slurs. TL;DR: a “palette swap” isn’t an accurate representation of this situation if you only swap the pallet once in order to draw a character that is largely off model compared to the other characters. Edit: ah i have more context now so I see how this argument doesn’t apply to this webcomic. However, *wow* there is a lot to unpack with the portrayal of the “pure” korean minority (in *Korea*) as the victim of mixed bullies.

Edgycore was right, the feminist arc was horrible and should've been a sign. Basically a teacher was teaching kids that both a man or woman could be a fireman and they were at her for "brainwashing". I'm glad I didnt have to read the "racism" chapter. I thought bringing back the corporal punishment was supposed to be an extensive joke to remind how stupid the comic is that I didnt get but yikes they probably were being serious. I really hate when comics use bad words without a very clear authors note disclosure to get it very clear that impressionable kids should not think its ok to act like in the comic. Nope, you have it in reverse. The bad guy here was the teacher. She wasn't teaching that both men and women can both be firemen, she was saying stupid things with the most twisted concept of modern feminism in the name of "equality". She literally got mad at a little girl who wore a feminine look and the other kids got so brainwashed by her that they started bullying the little girl too. The TRPA then caught wind of the situation, the whole arc played out and it ended with the teacher understanding what true equality meant and stopped enforcing false ideals onto children. People need to stop taking things out of context when criticising a piece of media. This story had no massive red flags about anything until just recently.

That chapter was the most agregious "and everyone clapped", revenge fantasy I've seen in a minute. This is a lot like the San E situation where he tried to justify ending his verse with "negro." He created an extreme scenario where he called a fictional Black person a negro after said fictional person called him a "yellow monkey." And, just like here, it was used as some sort of epic mic drop moment. Here, the author creates an extreme fantasy scenario where mixed kids out number full Koreans and where Korean racism towards mixed children doesn't exist. Where it's the invading "half breeds" attacking the "pure bloods" in their own home. If the topic you're discussing is a real life problem, you wouldn't need to distort reality to such extremes to make it "believable." Like the feminist chapter. And with the rise in anti-feminism in Korea, that was really telling of the author's stance that he'd write her to be this exagerated, brainwashing dictator. It's simply revenge fetish. Revenge against those he deems as undesirables. He uses his art to express his beliefs on corporal punishment, feminists, immigrants, racial mixing and replacement theory by having the characters act out his deepest desires.

But after a certain point, it made me realize that students are getting a bit too wild, especially bullying, and the teachers don't do anything about it. Like one of my family members was a victim of bullying and the teachers did nothing about it (I was also one, but not severely). Now while I do agree physical abuse is wrong and a teacher shouldn't beat a student up for chewing gum, there has to be some sort of firmness and discipline with the students who are making other kids miserable.

Believe it or not, a hard slap is a million times more effective than being told what to do, especially when said person refuses to listen normally. If you've never read the webtoon before, then you probably haven't seen the buckwild level of shit kids and adults there (i.e the villains of each arc) and the extent of theor shittiness. The violence is absolutely deserved. Maybe its just me, but as someone who has read all the way up to season 1, it never once made me think they were trying to promote violence towards normal people.

This page made me especially upset since I myself an Ethiopian. I have family back in Korea. My auntie in Korea is a teacher herself. When I saw this chapter I was unbelievably sad. The reason why some of my family immigrated from Ethiopia to Korea was because they were refugees. There are many of them struggle to make money or even to get a citizenship. So when this chapter came out it I was distraught. It felt like they wanted them to leave Korea as if there a nuisance.

Yes we did read the same manhwa 💀 Its just a matter of perspective really. A lot of us loved this webtoon cause of the themes of each arc. I mean if you boil it down to its core, its just an action manhwa. We're here for the action, the "justice is served by super cool badass main characters" moment. It isn't that deep for the majority of us. I mean realistically speaking there's probably a much better solution to each of these problems, but I don't think that was ever the author's intention. Translation and culture difference is also a big factor. SK has to deal with these incidents directly while most of us foreigners don't. To us, its just a story, to them it's smth far more personal. So it makes a lot of sense for them to hate it and foreigners to enjoy it. This racist take though, that's just too far.

It’s funny how this comic became infamous because I’ve heard negative views about it long before this incident. You see its true that Korea made corpal punishment illegal (it doesn’t mean every school did corpal punishment, depends on which school and region you went to. I remember when i read the first arc, and there's this kid having a mental breakdown ready to burn down his school because of his family falling apart, his dad actually physically abusing him (iirc), and i get that technically some of that was his fault, but the rest is just ignored, and he's just sent to juvie (that is famously known to work very well for rehabilitation of criminal minor !), happy ending whooo ! I got to the part where a lawyer was making abs argument where he says ,”Hey maybe let’s not punish you this child (who was a bully). He deserves a second chance and understanding cause there are societal factors that can lead someone to lash out and bullying like poverty, parental abuse, etc” And the main characters winning argument that we’re supposed to agree with is “Have you ever played video games?” Captain genius here was basically saying that cause video game chats are toxic so that means humans are inherently bad and enjoy being cruel. I’m not making this up check ch62. Each arc is very questionable 🤨. But the arc that really got me was the scared straight arc. Like one middle school arc deals with kids breaking the law and getting away with it cause they’re underage, and the solution was to send them to jail and allow the inmates to abuse them, so they can be too scared to break the law again. Worst part of that arc was the main kid needed therapy! He accidentally killed someone (by dropping a heavy object out of a window) and is clearly messed up from that! And nobody thought to take him to therapy so of course in the present he’s going to lash out and do petty crime! Then they put him in solitary confinement, which btw is known as pure torture! And it’s painted as a good thing! That arc told with zero sympathy for the 13 and under kids really let me know the authors genuine views tbh. (Also fun fact there was a show called Scared Straight in real life that sent misbehaving kids to jail to scare them away from continuing to commit crimes. Shocker it didn’t work and the majority of those kids ended up going to jail as adults. It’s almost as if they needed therapy or something. So that’s why I was very upset are that arc) Yeah this entire comic is right wing Korea propaganda and it just keeps getting worse.

(the school's environment has been shit for years and probably will continue since they only went at like one person) Some dudes the main 'bully' of the arc beat up calls some gangster to beat him up, he gets saved by the kid getting bullied and the mc tells him "you're lucky because otherwise i would have been the one beating your ass" (chapter 15) Rubbed me the wrong way the first time i saw it because i really took it as the mc doing worse than the gangster who were going to literally fucking cut off his fingers As for the lawyer he's actually shown to be pretty reasonable, he joins the agency for a bit to demonstrate its flaws and leaves immediately. I called him a "yakuza" because he was shown to have tattoos on his back during a shower scene. After his arc, there's the one with the new girl and the awful chapter 125, so it stops there. I assume he was supposed to have a backstory explaining he turned his life around since he got a second chance or smtg Aaaand for the last one, there's a runaway kid arc, idk how much you know about it but it's actually a pretty big social problem in Korea. Underage kids leave their family, usually because of abuse, but can't join shelters because it demands their parent's approval. Obviously going there would have them identifed by the police and send back to their abusive family. So they ends up doing part time jobs (which can ends up being dangerous or straight up not paid since there is no contract) and join 'runaway families' which are groups of more or less underaged kids (can go from like 10 to 21) that have runned away sticking together for more safety (usually they live in a tiny appartment together). Obviously that can lead them to more or less dangerous things (Drug dealing, forced prostitution, human traficking, and some 'runaway families' are absolutely awful and can lead into that as well...) It's actually a setting you see often in manwha, and i find the subject really interesting. But back on true education, the agency creates a shelter runaway kids can go to without having to get the approval of the parents (because they're above all laws) sorry if that's really long, i love dissecting stories like that. It's kinda hard to explain clearly too (You can see the 13yo getting sent to Juvie again in chapter 111, a sort of recap of things that happened until then)

There has been some heavy talk about schools and teachers in SK, teachers protesting bc of a teacher suicide after her students parents were basically bullying her etc and in general teachers rights aren't that good in Korea (or that is what I've heard). Idk how new this webtoon is but I would guess that these kind of recent incidents might be an inspiration for the comic, especially when bullying is known to be a huge issue in SK. If Daniel was seen as in the right for calling the black kid a slur, then I'd disagree since that's not cool. I think you confuse racism for prejudice. A white person calling the police on a black man in the US can get him killed, a black man calling the police on a white man might get him arrested or might not. I’ve never heard a black person threaten a white person with the the cops hoping they shoot them but you can do a quick YT search and find the opposite look up BBQ Becky where she literally fake cries that some blacks are attacking her after she was threatening them at a park. That’s the difference between racism and prejudice. They are both bad but only one of these systemically oppresses another groups freedom and equality. So much so they have stats that support what I’ve shared. Second note: words can be a form of violence… it’s called harassment. It doesn’t have to be physical violence. The problem at least with many laws in the US regarding violence is that it doesn’t include emotional and psychological abuse which is just as damaging and fatal as physical abuse. But this whole comic was about inflicting physical abuse above all other types to teach bully’s a lesson. Most of the manhwa is about the situation being more nuanced than it first seems in the early chapters. It always starts with shock chapters then it evolves, by yes using extremes methodes but its the point of the manhwa. I actually found the comic pretty easily by just looking up its alternative name "True education Manga". I remember reading it a long time ago, it was one of those revenge things where its like woo lets watch my bullys get the shit kicked out of them kinda fantasy. Living in korea, i have seen there is an intensely different experience being half korean and half white, black, or another asian ethnicity. Being half black always gets the most flack upon first meeting. full stop. There are trashy people that hate on all these mixed race kids, but the half black kids always have the worst stories. There is a male model here and his best story is how one teacher "treated him normally" which he attributes to his success. Didn't encourage hime to model mind you! Sadly I only really began to reflect on the webtoon after the egregious cult arc, even though I thought they tackled feminism really poorly too. It seemed like the webtoon was so focused on tackling every topical societal issue with little regard for the weight that these topics hold. Unfortunately, the author did not have the skill to thoroughly examine these problems and do them justice. All they could do was give violence, but with the excuse that it was for justice. Also, a lot of the stories were based on real-life cases which seemed slightly exploitative.

@@Neremworld Wayyy before this chapter was released (I'd been reading the webtoon for about half a year up to this point), at one point the author had to take a small hiatus before they could continue the webtoon. The way they addressed their fans was really sweet and apologetic, thanked us for giving the series a chance, and even showed us some behind-the-scenes, which i thought was cool and fun. It gave me the impression that the author was a good person overall

I think the whole concept of this comic or manhua stems from Korea law where minors can literally get away with murder and not go to jail so for bullies, they can beat kids there to death and get a couple years probation with schooling while not having anything on their record. So because of this law, or rather the way, how laws are written, it gives a lot of bullies, a safety blanket to do whatever they want and none of the adults can do anything about it. But man, the whole concept of the comic is messed up instead of going through the process of I don't know him, becoming a literal judge, or a legislator to change the laws, even if that means blackmailing other legislators that would've been more interesting than seeing a bunch of teachers beat up bullies.

I wanted the show and enjoyed it. I didn't notice the African vs Korean racism, though. But I've noticed vice versa pretty strongly. The female main(?) character was the most extra with the controversial topics in the show, as well. I might have to watch it a second time since I didn't really see the last episode (though viewer reviews on sites makes me rethink my current decision to watch).

4:19 it seems to actually be based on real life circumstances one way or another. from what i know, an elementary teacher recently killed herself after receiving overwhelming abuse from parents regarding a confrontation between two students. as a result, many teachers are protesting and demanding the government to enact legislature to prevent teachers being abused by parents. not sure about which happened first, but from reports, there's a culture in South Korean schools that contributes to stuff like this.

I used to like this comic, it bringing awareness of many types of bullying and how two wardens put them in place. At first when I saw the thumbnail, i was kinda scared because I recognised the artstyle, and when I saw one of the wardens I immediately knew it was this webtoon. I haven’t read it in a long time so I didn’t know about this, I went to check my subscribed and to no surprise it was gone. Really disappointing that now these days literally anyone i idolise gets cancelled. I understand you probably didn't understand the context of the manhua, but it was actually just right-wing propaganda against a law that basically just said "you can't beat children", so he was using the bullying epidemic that it was suppose to help curb because adults beating kids freely was shown to signal to the other kids that beating other kids was okay to crusade against that law. Because he REALLY likes beating children. It wasn't written out of a desire to show the downtrodden getting justice and how that'd be good. It was just to get him his legal child-beating back. He was an evil freak through and through, just rotten to the core.

None of you have basic reading comprehension. The author wasn't condoning the characters actions. More very specifically was using it as an example to show how wrong racism is. To address the "why would he do that" it's literally what he's done the entire time with literally every story before (and no none of them accurately living in s. Korea.) I'm so very disappointed. This is why paying attention in language arts was important. Its one thing to get upset with the authors choice of direction and not reading it, but active censorship on groundless claims is just pathetic, and those of us who also paid attention in history class know that hitler would be proud of you.

The reason why controversial topics don't work well in media these days is because it's usually written to fit an agenda, one that is usually...and actually, fiction. It gets worse with anti-black propaganda, as well. Reflecting societal issues is only tricky if we wish to tear off pieces of the lining of the mirror we dont want the viewer to see. Artist wise, i think it's best to bring realistic things to the story if you want to make a story, making awareness of social issues (or as "woke" used to be defined before politics butchered it). Societal issue wise, I think....we need to be the bigger people here. Just let people write their stories and use words and theories that would "harm" people. Nothing harmful will come....from...it *reads history textbook* oh no...

I'm sure there are real problems along different groups but it handles it so poorly it doesn't really accomplish anything just gets away with an N-word. It also limits the scope by being in a generic school setting. There are plenty of stories that get more outlandish but can connect with real world events, first I can think of is Assassination Class and failing school systems, but I don't think it really goes far enough here and adding racial slurs doesn't make it more fun or relatable. That feels like something that should be left to a low point where they talk through their problems or even the teacher stops abusing the bully recognizing they went too far.

Before the webtoon got cancelled, I remember they did take one case from real life. The selfie from one chapter of 13 year olds in a police station was probably based on one case of 13 year olds taking a selfie on the police station while getting detained (said 13 year olds stole a car and hit a delivery man, killing him) But that said, it is not the first time that Korean media did something like this (perhaps not as extreme as calling someone a slur) but I admit I do not have high expectations with them tackling race issues.

I'm.... I'm so dead because YT has literally been recommending this comic to me and I was like "Uhhhhh no this seems super weird??" Because the panel that was regularly being showed was a grown man slamming a teenagers face into a desk for being a bully. Like. 😐 Wow no thanks. I went to several schools where all your parents had to do was sign a release stating you could hit their kid and quite literally had yard sticks broken over my shoulder/the side of my face for daydreaming while I looked out the window because the teachers DIDN'T BELIEVE ADHD WAS REAL. There's no reason a grown adult needs to be using violence towards children even if that child is violent. They're the child. It's literally your job to handle it better than that. I'd also like to point out that I have heard some pretty horrifying stories about bullying in South Korea and Japan specifically and there are basically no anti bullying rules or laws. And teachers are pretty safe from the students because students target each other and due to the laws regarding children committing crimes they literally just get away with it. I don't want to say I recommend looking some of these cases up - they are DEEPLY harrowing and a testament to why consequences can't just be removed due to a perpetrators age - but it would give better clarity for why the entire premise of this web series is absolutely unhinged conservative propaganda. It doesn't even reflect what I've heard about bullying in schools. Them not letting teachers hit students anymore isn't the cause of bullying and many teachers just ignore it the same way they do in the US. I literally had a white kid in my drama class spend an ENTIRE YEAR doing skits where he made racist jokes about my appearance and literally sexually harassed me in the black box and I just watched my teacher laugh with everyone else. And her getting up and slapping the taste out of his mouth wouldn't have fixed it but I would have settled for her saying literally anything to get him to stop. The team behind this webcomic clearly don't actually understand the social dynamics involved in bullying and what it actually takes to stop it. It's a violent, conservative revenge fantasy from someone who honestly seems deeply deranged.
