I own one and it has become practically my favorite in my large collection. Craftmanship is high, size just perfect for me. A handsome little piece that can go just about anywhere. The date window is fine, it's small, color matched, and inconspicuous. What I've noted from owning this watch is that a date positioned like that completely preserves the symmetry of the lume layout, which is significant for a dive style watch. I only wish they made a bracelet for the 38mm case.

@michaeltran77853 жыл бұрын
The price point is fine. Blancpain has the right to charge whatever they want. If you don't like it then go ahead and buy a Rolex or Omega. Also, the date window is a great addition that gives balance to the watch. This makes it dressier in my opinion because it has evolved from being a tool watch to a luxury timepiece. The location of the date is symbolic in that they are innovators and to not copy the status quo. They do not do things just because others do it or because of some customers requests. Rolex chose and stuck to the 3 o'clock position which is great and seems to satisfy most people. Omega made the huge mistake of going back and forth from 3 o'clock to 6 o'clock which is very indecisive. Blancpain is smart in not changing. It is a unique watch and suited only for the cognoscenti. Moreover on the date window, it serves merely as an addition and not the centerpiece of the watch. There is a story and history behind this watch and only those who take time to do the research will appreciate its true beauty.

Arguably the first dedicated dive watches were the pre-WWII Omega Marine (1932) and Panerai Radiomir 2533 (1936, movement courtesy of Rolex), and the Omega Seamaster (developed for use on submarines) came out in 1948. But certainly the Fifty Fathoms established the template for the modern dive watch with unidirectional rotating bezel.
@Touyoujin4 жыл бұрын
I would say the bezel template came from Weem for his design to Longines in early 1930 for the need of navigation in WW2 then followed by Rolex Zerographe that carried such design in 1937. These are histories that got untold and overlooked by most people and thought that fifty fathoms set the standard.
@davidjb36714 жыл бұрын
@@Touyoujin Interesting, though perhaps the Fifty Fathoms was the first place all these design aspects came together. It's rare in engineering or industrial design to find something totally new that doesn't build on earlier ideas, but it's the successful realization of these that tends to be marked in history.
@retired_in_portugal2 жыл бұрын
The Fifty Fathoms was the first to incorporate a "Unidirectional" dive bezel therefore making it the first "Modern" dive watch. There are of course a few that don't follow this blueprint (JLC Polaris, IWC Aquatimer etc..) but the majority of the watch world does.

If Blancpain made a FITTED strap with curved ends I would buy this in a heartbeat... I can't believe they didn't go for it and instead left a gap in the case, which in my opinion looks like an aftermarket strap fitted to a watch that had a curved end strap/bracelet in the first place. On top of that the 43mm has a non standard 23mm lug width... :( Please Blancpain, give us a proper FITTED rubber strap and this would make the watch twice the watch it is right now (and it is spectacular), both in terms of the looks and comfort, since a strap like that stabilizes the watch case on the wrist beautifully!

If the date window took away one of the indices at the 3 or 9 it would make the Watch look too bare imo. The design already has so much open space because of the small indices that the date window does not look too crowded even that position

@TruckeeDoggo4 жыл бұрын
I used to own this watch but found it disappointing on many fronts and ended up selling it. The "38mm" case size is misleading, it actually wears more like a 36mm because the bezel is actually too wide in proportion to the size of the dial. The 4:30 date window is poorly executed and difficult to read. The movement is also nothing special; it's based on an antiquated Frederic Piguet movement and it does not have stop seconds/hacking functionality, and has less efficient uni-directional winding (meaning the rotor only winds when it spins the mainspring when it rotates in one direction). The movement is also well-known to be somewhat fragile and delicate, not suitable for a real diver watch, and having nowhere near the same level of shock resistance as the movements Rolex and Omega use in their diver watches.
