If I remember right the lore of this specific Lava Wyrm is that he was a troll that practiced dragon communion while the others we see were all originally humans. That could explain why he's so much stronger than the others.

A strat I figured out because shes simply great against almost any openworld boss: there are cliffs above the wyrm you can easily access with Torrent. From there on you either just spawn Latenna and let her do all the work, spam ranged spells or do both. He cant really harm you much up there

This Wyrm has one of the best areas where a free for all between mobs happen. Squidboy can do so much damage against him along with the Crab, coupled with Summons it can turn the area into a Mosh Pit plus the cave where you can also cheese him.

Gino mentioned the squids could kill the monster, so I tried it a few days ago. I aggro’d all three squid monsters and lured them over to the magma wyrm. They made short work of him, which was actually cool to see.

for me, the hardest thing about this fight was its super delayed overhead slam, as no matter what buffs or builds you ran, if it hit you, it would one shot you no matter what, so until i got good enough to dodge it, that hit would always just kill me and make me lose all my progress

Yes and no. In the DLC we learn that the lava wyrms were basically the failures who couldn't handle the power and went crazy with it rather than just the default end result of anyone using it. Unfortunately for the dragons that was like 99% of the people who practiced dragon communion. The true endgoal was to create a dragon communion warrior capable of handling the power and strong enough to kill Bael.

Oh I know. Dragon Communion as we learn in the DLC is basically a holy ritual to gain the strength of dragons so that man could do what the A. Dragons couldn't and kill off VILE BAYLE and his progeny. It's just that it seems like I'd you weren't focused on that noble goal and instead lost yourself to the hunger and lust for power, you get magma wyrm'd. Hence me saying it's not the best choice if power is what you're after

@@rwberger6 All the DLC tells us in that regard is that even ancient dragons can be hunted for their hearts (Florissax even removes her own as a Placidusax-ordered gift) and that Bayle might regenerate out of whoever eats his heart. People turning into Magma Wyrms seems like a side effect that Placidusax didn't bother to test for, and doesn't care to fix.

Honestly I had such an easy time with this dragon when I realized I could just pull all the mobs to it and hide. The secret is to make it aggro the land octopi, use Rotten Breath, let it kill those octopi, then drag it close enough to the other 2 octopi a bit further away so that they aggro the dragon. Rotten breath again and it'll die along with the 2 octopi real easy. "Oh but I don't got no Rotten Breath"? Well, if you choose to gimp yourself I can't do nothing for you, son, the resources are there.
