A very fun and sharp reaction - thanks!! There is actually a little bit of sense to the story: basically it's about the formation of a family. Barbara and Adam can't have children - and they do want them, as you hear them talking about trying while they're on vacation. Lydia is trapped with a pair of parents who don't know how to relate to her and don't really care enough about making the effort. By the end of the movie, the Maitlands and Lydia have come together; in addition, the Maitlands have had to expand their tolerance to admit both the senior Dietzes, and the Dietzes have yielded space and decor to the Maitlands. Even the afterlife red tape has adapted: instead of insisting the living and the dead have to kept separate and ignorant, we now have a new booklet of stereo instructions for how the two can live together. Beetlejuice is the agent of chaos that brings this about. Not that he intends to, wants to, or cares about it in the slightest. But still.

The thing about the Garlic on the wall is, more or less, just to keep it fresh and nearby. Lot’s of Rural families do this, along with spices like Sage, Rosemary, Bay Leaves, stuff like that. It’s also good at keeping Mosquitoes away because most bugs HATE Garlic.

Honestly beetlejuice was just as pervy in the musical, but I STILL AM SO GLAD FOR HOW THEY CHANGED HIM. In the movie, he definitely knew how he was affecting them, but in the musical you can tell this guy has no idea what he’s doing, like, literally ever 💀 (not an excuse but he doesn’t scare me the way movie one does)

Garlic on the wall? When you cook, you pick the cloves off the garlic plait. Easy. My parents used to have a garlic plait hung up like that, with lots of bulbs, and it was just because it was easy to pick the cloves off whenever you needed them. You put garlic into a LOT of dishes.

While it is a TOUCH on the scary side (OK, it traumatized a lot of kids back in the day), I'm going to recommend 'Return to Oz'. That is, in my opinion, a near-perfect Halloween movie - it's not horror, but it has scares, plus loads of whimsy, fantasy galore, and - oh yes - a dude with a pumpkin head. Can't get much more Halloweeny than that.

I can quickly explain the sandworm, and why it suddenly comes from the sky, of all places....when Adam and Barbara go out of the house, it teleports them to Saturn...for whatever reason. Sandworms live on Saturn in this universe, and so....Barbara somehow...wrangled rode the sandworm and made it go towards earth. A bit wacky and not entirely realistic, but it's 80s Tim Burton, a lot of stuff doesn't really make sense and is farfetched with his films. xD; (Additionally, I looked into it a bit more just now...apparently the sandworms, and Barbara riding on one, are a reference to ANOTHER 80s film, called "Dune".)

The cartoon version of Beetlejuice is much better in my opinion. For one it's a series, so there's more time for character development and expanding the lore, not to mention getting sidetracked with all kinds of random nonsense... second, both Lydia and Beetlejuice are much more enjoyable characters in the cartoon, they actually have a pretty wholesome friendship, Lydia likes the weird and macabre and enjoys Beetlejuice's wacky sense of humor and the adventures they have together, and Beetlejuice likes that Lydia is a free spirit, who doesn't conform to social norms and she even inspires him to try to be a better person - having quite a few heartfelt moments, where Beetlejuice is actually shown to care about Lydia and want what's best for her or regret some of his choices that may have hurt her. Also, being a cartoon, it has a lot more freedom to do weird visual effects without relying on bad CGI.

I've loved this movie ever since I saw it as a kid and Tim Burton has done other amazing work. If you're interested or haven't watched them I'd suggest Nightmare Before Christmas or Frankenweenie (I ugly cried!) because it's October.

@@RukiyaReacts Tim Burton used to work for Disney as an animator during his works for Disney, he wrote poem version of The Nightmare Before Christmas, two short films such as Vincent, and live action version Frankenweenie. When he thought he wanted to pitch the idea to Disney to make an animated remake but they refused to do that at time for spooky dark films until when the Blackhole flopped at the box office resulting downward path during it’s dark age without Walt Disney’s guidance
