Thanks for sandbag idea. I would drill holes a few inches up in tote so heavy, consistent rains don't overfill it. Though a number of gardeners use those Solo cups, I prefer clear ones. This allows me to monitor moisture level and root development better, giving the plants a bigger chance for success without drying out, getting root-bound, etc.!

Yes I have one big 18 gallon tote I keep by the rainspout(it overflows off the roof) so it's a make shify rainbarrel in rental! I have a hole at the top so it actually flows out into the pot next to it when it's full and that one flows into yet a smaller trough after from its overflow!

@@winipb2 alot depends on the plant and your bucket size... my hot peppers sat in 2 inches of water alllll summer and produced like gang busters... plants thst don't like wet feet will stop rooting down when it hits the saturation line...mine were 5 gallon grow bags so they had plenty of room before that 2 inch wick at the bottom... however if I had placed them in a 5 gallon tub...they would have for sure died.... where the overflow holes go will depend on your climate your rainfall and your pla t

Larry Hall was an awesome source of information. As noted in some other comments, drilling holes a few inches up in the water container will prevent over filling. Another tip to prevent mosquitos would be to add gravel to the water container(around the grow bags) to a level above the water line. This way the mosquitos can't get to the water to lay their eggs.

Love the channel. I quit using the red solo cups a few years back, and started using the clear McDonald's large cups. The new preference is because of the transparency, I like being able to see the root growth through the cup. I save cup lids also, so I can create mini greenhouses for some seed starts. I think I get about 3 years out of a cup before degradation. Good luck!

I love this! Only tips I'd offer... ( I do these too!) The plastic at dollar tree does not have any recyle markings( I still use them, but I am aware I don't know how foodsafe is) however my dollar tree oil pans specifically say caution not food safe...often low cost oil pans contain ground up tires and such and those are most det not food safe... dish pans, trash cans, buckets, all amazing ideas! I'd justnstear away from oil pans unless ONLY for flowers(non edible)

We are stuck with a lot of materials that we humans have created, and we can [re]use them in our homes and gardens or allow them to be single use and off to landfills to affect everyone. You have very valid points about plastic safety. Most of us are consuming micro-plastics daily. We're experimenting with phytoremediation plants in plastic containers that form a barrier for plants in the middle for consumption.

Man My imposter syndrome hits so hard I've always felt dirty about watering this way when talking to other gardeners but I love it. I like to mix up a small dose of slightly nitrogen heavy water and underwater my seedlings after they come out of cells. I find it's just so much more even than top watering and gives you a nice strong root system pulling towards the bottom

Another idea to consider for the seed pots is to cover the entire container setup with plastic/plastic bag creating sort of a mini greenhouse effect until the seeds germinate and sprout up to where they can be hardened off. The bag helps control the moisture evaporation and lessens the need for watering even more so the water in the large container goes further and you add less in the beginning (1-2 inches). Of course the plants cannot be in hot direct sunlight but I have used this technique in my greenhouse during winter with the plant pots set on a drainage pot without added water so as not to generate mold during the cool winter. The bags keep the seeds warmer to help them germinate and I do not have to water them for several weeks/month when it's cold.
