Coil from scamazon crime… Same scenario, I bought a fs85 from someone for $50. It had a no name carb & coil with the OEM parts in a bag. I took the original carb & rebuilt it using the diaphragms in the cheapo scamazon carb, slightly shortened the og coil & reattached the boot (he ripped the boot off) removing it.. It fired right up & ran great with the OEM parts

IMO, check coil (gap) and the little wire from switch to coil sometimes wears through and grounds out with movement against the block. I have replace a lot of those little wires that were shorting intermittently against the fins. Also obviously would check the flywheel and key. It’s almost always something simple. Lol

I've only shown it a couple times in my vids but it's worth noting that while you had the muffler off ,try running/starting the machine. If it does run, use map gas or propane to burn out the catalytic converter. Same as you would do to the spark arrestor screen. It works miracles. I have a "one time rule" with those carbs (including mower carbs.) If it isn't running or is running poorly, I will take it apart one time and clean it out. If it works, great. If it doesn't work, or it turns out it needs replacement parts, I just replace them. I could buy the rebuild kit, but for the price, a new carb really doesn't cost much more, and I am simply bolting it on. I used to spend time to rebuild carbs, but with the cheap eBay carbs that work just fine (and are often times more adjustable,) it just isn't worth it anymore unless it is something old or obscure to where a replacement isn't easily available.

I remember the short vide on this franken-trimmer lol. It's the new SRM-212530 (210/225/230) combo special. Given the prior person's abby-normal approach to this machine, it is anyone's guess what may have been replaced with the wrong part. I know the flywheel on the 210, 225, and 230s are not compatible, and last I recall, the 230 had a larger clutch that wouldn't fit inside the drum for the 210, which I believe is the front cover on this one. Unless they went through the trouble of removing the drum - which is a pain in the butt - I suspect they put something wrong on the flywheel side. Usually, with an air leak the machine will still run but will run rough, but doesn't hurt to pressure& vacuum test the block. I know a lot of your videos are filmed quite in advance, but I would remove the block and make sure the correct flywheel & clutch are installed - the 230 would have 2 screws holding the clutch to the flywheel and the 210 it would be a smaller screw-on style.
@HomeGaragechannel8 ай бұрын
thank you for remembering and yes the problem has to do with parts compatibility
@hardluckvintagegarage69688 ай бұрын
The few times I had spark, compression, and a good carb and the engine would not start or just fire every once in a while was due to a sheared flywheel key which allowed the flywheel to slip out of place and mistime the spark.

you're very close to the answer on this one.

@HomeGaragechannel8 ай бұрын
that's a really good guess
@gearhead3668 ай бұрын
Sounds like timing. I've never seen a sheared flywheel key on a trimmer, but I guess it could happen. Or, like someone else mentioned, maybe the new coil has the wrong timing. It could also be a problem with the carb. I had an Echo trimmer with a carb that I disassembled, and when I put it back together, I forgot the little bushing that the throttle plate rides on. It was tiny. I didn't lose it. It was in the collection of parts I saved. Without that bushing, the carb needle rides too low, making the mixture lean. Once I figured out what it was, I managed to get it running. So if someone made the same mistake I did, that bushing could be missing.
@HomeGaragechannel8 ай бұрын
this one is related to the new ignition coil, and it's more about the quality of the spark.

@@HomeGaragechannelHmm. OK. The spark LOOKED good, but that wasn't in the engine.

@roseymalino98558 ай бұрын
That;s a head scratcher. Doesn't exhibit some of the tell tale signs of bad timing so if it's timing, it's not off by much, Would have liked to see you externally squirt fuel into carb which, if successful. would indicate a fuel feed problem. Then I would look for a vacuum leak.
@HomeGaragechannel8 ай бұрын
the issues is related to the "amount" of spark but when you see the problem, it'll make sense
@tiredoldmechanic17918 ай бұрын
When the coil was replaced, was it installed correctly? Some coils can be installed with the wrong side toward the engine and it throws the timing off. There could also be a problem with the gap between the coil and flywheel.
@HomeGaragechannel8 ай бұрын
Ah.!! you're the first to ask about it. In the next video the coil is facing the right way but the gap.. that's another story all together

@hickorystx8 ай бұрын
OK, here is my guess. The ignition wire/boot making poor contact. As long as coil gap on magnets is within spec. Other than that, try an Exorcism 😯You did a systematic diagnostic eval so to me, inconsistent weak spark r/t resistance. Great video though!!!

If it's anything like a Stihl hedge trimmer that I repaired then it probably has the wrong ignition coil fitted because both the crankshaft & ignition coil were a matched set meaning that the aftermarket ignition coil which I ordered was the incorrect part because you need to refer to the serial number to order the correct parts despite it having the same model number. Or it could be caused by a sheared flywheel key, a crankcase air leak or the carburettors main jets check valve is leaking fuel so check all of that, you could be up for a new carburettor !

Self control, lol. That Honda GCV 160 I have been asking questions about belongs to a friend of mine. I offered to help him out and get it running, and I am still trying 15 months later. It is on an old Snapper self propelled push mower. Every part in the fuel system but, the tank, cap, and governor spring is new, but it will only run fully choked. It runs perfect as long as it is choked. smh I also just found another issue. The self propel was set to 3, and I just checked to make sure it was working, but never tried changing the speed. When I tried to turn the lever to the highest speeds, it will not stay in place. The self propel system switches gears via a vertical disk that moves left to right on a shaft, and is turned by a horizontal disk connected to the engine by a belt. The vertical disk is seized on the shaft and does not move. Do you know any tricks for breaking them loose without doing any damage?

for me, I would use repeated applications of brake cleaner on the shaft.
