I feel that range anxiety will never be stopped with more range, but instead, with easy ways to charge up in the event that you run out of range. With an ICE vehicle, if you run out of fuel, you can simply get some gas in a gas can and fill up to get to the closest gas station. I don’t think that EVs yet have their proverbial “gas can” quick fix, which I think is the true cause of range anxiety. I think it’s amazing to see cars like the Lucid Air and EQXX with potential ranges of 500+ miles, but I think that the full fix will be higher range capacities, as well as the EV version of a gas can quick fix!
@ridgefrost
@ridgefrost 2 жыл бұрын
Nah range anxiety is pretty much solved with this, yeah its better to have more and faster chargers but if your car can only cover a 100km distance, thats going to be a huge problem nomatter how many chargers or gas stations there are no? I'm sure even if there was a handful of chargers in your city if you can drive 1000kms on 1 charge you'd feel pretty confident driving basically anywhere
@takashiessex116
@takashiessex116 2 жыл бұрын
@@ridgefrost I agree with you there! Larger range is a huge plus, but I just think it doesn’t solve the whole problem. I think it’s about larger range AND a quick fix in the event that you run out. Whenever you buy a vehicle that can go longer without a charge/fuel, you generally become more inclined to drive without refueling/recharging due to that, and so I think the potential issue of running out of gas/charge will always exist, no matter how much range the vehicle has. So, I think that is why it’s important for EVs to have a “quick fix” that allows for us to get a bit of charge in our cars quickly in the event that we run out so we can get to the nearest station!
@ridgefrost
@ridgefrost 2 жыл бұрын
@Takashi Essex yeah sure and i believe the merc has that covered with the solar panels that can add an addition 25miles/kms of range and i'm sure i've heard other EV companies thinking of implementing this as well but to be honest running out of range on a 1000km range vehicle would be the highest level of incompetence by the owner

For those of us who charge at home, none of this is an issue. Much more convenient than going to a gas station. On road trips, superchargers are everywhere now. For non-Tesla EV's, the charging network isn't nearly as reliable. Yet.

@@riverbankfisher well get used to it as it's the most efficient design aerodynamically, the main reason you dont see many long tail ICEVs I think is because petrol engines are so inefficient that the slight reduction in drag doesnt make much difference but when you have a car that's 95% efficient every bit of drag reduction matters.

I have a Niro which has a good range, on the odd occasion when I need to charge away from home I’ve alway had issues, things won’t change till charger companies are made responsible for their actions, like a fine if you can’t charge

'Re-fuelling' an EV is a totally different experience to that of a piston car. Most charging happens overnight, if you're fortunate enough to have off-street parking, of course. Even if you don't, most 'rapid' charging happens when you're inside a motorway service station / Starbucks etc etc having a 'normal' 20-30 minute comfort break, just like you would have if you'd driven your piston car for 3-4 hours. If planned correctly, it's incredibly rare for an EV driver to actually have to sit in their car waiting for the 30 mins or so for it to recharge. Like I said, it's a totally different experience. 👍

Well they claim that's the consumption at highway speeds. You may be getting 5.5 miles per kWh in a model 3 when driving VERY chill and never past 50 mph... For highway-use it's more like 3.5 with a standart range model 3 during summer. Still very good but no comparison to this concept.

the easiest way of extending range (i'm at 1:21 in the video) in an EV is twofold. 1 make it aero, more aero means less juice for the same difference. and 2 add more batteries. it isn't rocket science to get an ev to go far, it is borderline rocket science however to make it affordable is.

Have never had range anxiety really. If you're going on a long trip it's easy to just stop at a really fast charger like ionity and if it's something you couldn't predict, it feels like there's 11 and 50kW chargers everywhere. Won't let you top up 80% in the time it takes you to have something to drink and maybe go to the bathroom but prevents you from running out all together. the only people worried about range anxiety is those that have never owned one.

The real cure for range anxiety is more charging stations. Here in America, Sheetz (a petrol station company) is retro-fitting some of their stations with charging capabilities. Sheetz locations also have a kitchen and serve decent (mostly) food... so you've got something to do while the charging happens, and there is a large customer base already accustomed to stopping there to re-fuel. I imagine that the transition to electric vehicles will be eased as more petrol stations add charging capabilities. One of the nice things about Tesla, is you can use their GPS to navigate yourself to the nearest charging station. All EV manufacturers should do this, it will help range anxiety considerably. The EQXX is really pretty. yum. Curious about that battery tech. I think materials science is going to be a profession in high demand for a good 30 years.

@@RWoody1995 it is surprising how much drag there is even though it's a relatively small area, every little bit of drag is massively amplified as speeds increase. Range anxiety is more of a concern for people who have never owned an EV than those of us who drive them every day, with not a hint of anxiety.

1000 KM range now we are talking even if the battery degrades over time probably still get 400 to 500km range.

I feel the styling lends itself better as a two door vehicle. Why the extra doors on this concept?? Love the range, so for many it will be filling up or charging maybe once a week or so and even then this will be a top up. As battery life is often discussed in “ Cycles” or charges these batteries will be less used and elongate the life of the car. It may give the car a proper second hand value as this car gets older. I have always advocated that petrol cars still appeared the edge over electric vehicles for the reasons above especially the initial high costs. If car manufacturers are able to replicate this type of offering, no ifs or maybes it will be time to get rid of petrol and diesel maybe sooner than the 2030 deadline!!!

The Tesla Plaid and Lucid Air have production vehicles with 500+ mile range which is not to far off ad yet the styling and usability are really good
@User.Joshua
@User.Joshua 2 жыл бұрын
The Plaid has a range of 396 miles and that’s overly optimistic, and far worse during winter driving. The Lucid has a 118 kWh battery, but it’s pretty efficient given its size. It’s a true 500 mile, real world tested vehicle. The Mercedes only has an 100 kWh battery, so 620 miles is quite the feat. They could easily do 750 miles with Lucid’s battery size.

@@User.Joshua I miss spoke on the Plaid's range, I should have verified, however I seemed to recall that another KZbinr claim the range was further but watched it again it is under 400. I am glad I was correct on the Lucid but that was clear from the MotorTrend video driving from Hollywood to the Bay Area. It is a beautiful car, it will be interesting what the final product will look like for MB but I'm honestly not impressed just yet.
