I absolutely understand why you gave up. I am probably about 30 years older than you, I visited the alps quite a few times in my twenties and usually always came home early and I’m sure the heat is much worse now. Like you I would much rather be on a Scottish summit (or my native Lake District) wearing my cag and over trousers!

If you're nauseous in the heat, you're in the early stages of heat exhaustion which in its extreme form can lead to heat stroke. I was on the Haute Route Pyrenees early in July and had to leave it for exactly the same reasons. You've made the right decision and tje decision you have taken will have been one of the hardest you'll have done from a walking perspective.. You will have invested time and money in preparing to go on this trip and the heat undid it. I am coming to the conclusion that walking in southern Europe, including the Alps is getting harder and harder due to climate change. That said, I am due to walk the GR54 with 2 friends next year. I really hope that I don't have the same weather you did. My silver lining was that I returned to the UK and after a week's recovery, set out to successfully walk the Cambrian Way. Don't feel too bad about the decision you took. It was the right one for you.

Hi Morg, thanks for taking the time to respond. It was mild nausea but you’re right I definitely made the right decision and I have no regrets. It could have easily got worse. What time of year are going? Hopefully it’s cooler. In hindsight I wonder if September would have been better? June can be an issue with snow on the passes. I might have a look into Scandinavia next time.

@@WalkWithWallace I have two treks lined up in the next two years. The Massiv Ruta in Norway where I sense heat exhaustion won't be an issue. I'm planning on the GR54 mid July next year for exactly the reason you outline re snow. I have walked extensively in the Alps and Pyrenees and this year was by far the worst heat I have encountered. If it continues then northern Europe will become my playground. I'm so pleased for you that you are comfortable with the decision made. I am now, but for a few days I really regretted it. But, that was my mind not working properly due to the heat exhaustion.

Sounds good, I’ll do a bit of research. Sarek NP looks popular among long distance hikers too. If you’re on FB, there’s a GR54 Hikers group. Was really useful for snow condition reports, plus there was a lot of storm damage earlier this year. The French park authorities were brilliant in doing repairs etc keeping the route open. Weird thing was I was out of my comfort zone finding my way home solo after quitting. An adventure in itself 😄

You needed the comfort of your own home and travelling in a foreign country where you don't speak the language means that you are in disorientation. That is another symptom of the mild heat exhaustion that you were experiencing. Right decision made.

You have to come back, maybe in early June, less heat, less crowded and the most beautiful part comes after Vallouise. Did most of the GR 54 in august 2022, started in Monetier les Bains. Came back in june of 2023 and did the first part. You definately missed the most beautiful part! But if you're not used to the circumstances like heat or elevation, it's always the right thing to quit. Nice video, always fun to rediscover the places I know!

Cheers mate, yeah I think I would like to go back and finish the section I missed. There was late snow this year making June a bit tricky for the likes of the Col de l’Aup Martin. Storm damage too. Park authorities working hard to ensure washed away bridges were replaced etc.

Hi Robin, what an interesting trip A hike I know is beyond my abilities these days. I just watched Morgs 4 mountains, he just returned from the Pyrenees after a few days as was way to hot and he is a proper long distance hiker. I myself did a couple of annual holidays hiking the GR 10 about 15 years ago and on the last trip ended up in hospital due to the heat so that really put me off the hot countries and I’m worse now older too. I’ll probably avoid Central Europe for hiking in the height of summer. June would have been better but there was a lot of storm damage and late snow on the high passes. 😔

@@WalkWithWallace yes we went in late June I recal and during the hike we held back one day and set out at 4am on the recommendation of the hostel guy so we could take our time as the high pass still had a lot of snow and he said we could also make it to the next hostel that way. That was the most exciting days hiking I had ever done and I was leading a party of 6. When we reached the hostel the warden said he had been open a month and we were the first that year due to the snow, he cooked us a fantastic meal , it was a stunning location. 🙏❤️🏕️

Sorry it didn't work out for you Robin. Me and Sandy both sitting watching the video and we both said literally at the same time that you didn't seem your usual self. It's like that sometimes. I went on the South Downs Way last year and got a niggle only lasted 2 days and I bailed. Head not in it, questioning why I even decided to walk it. Reminded me of going up Mulhacén in the south of Spain one July, camping at 9000 feet. We started the walk at 1100, after a few hours we were drinking water with electrolyte tablets, but just could not quench the thirst and sense of dehydration. Plus the effects of altitude.

Not much fun is it, and altitude sickness can kick in around the 3000m mark. I was using electrolyte tablets too, definitely helped.

Finally got round to watching this video. Unbelievable mountain scenery, do you realise how big they are when you're that close to them or is it hard to judge and get the scale of them. Think that's first time I've ever seen you properly struggling, must've been hot hot hot. Did the other 2 finish the route ? You really do get a sense of a scale, the mountains are higher, the valleys deeper and the rivers are wider. Still not the highest either. They managed to finish aye, I’m tempted to go back and finish the section I missed, maybe in September and hope its cooler.

That looked very hard work Robin. Even though you were starting before sunrise to beat the heat with those descents during the day you were right back into the higher temperatures again and then walking into the evening . Hiking at a higher altitude has an impact too. Just back from a holiday in the Queyras area not for from where you were. We found it hard work going for a few ahort hikes without the heavy rucsacs. Dont let this put you off returning to the Alps. There are lota of great places to visit with plenty of options for day hikes similar to climbing a Munro which take you to great viewpoints or you can just travel around the area as a tourist. Cable cars can also take the sting out of some ascents and then you can spend rest of the day enjoying the high mountains. ATB Derek

Well thought you did very well the views were fantastic and you made the right decision. I love a bit of sun but hillwalking in the heat is no fun and if it’s not enjoyable then a walk can turn quickly into punishment so you did the right thing in all honesty I didn’t think you looked very well on some of the footage ( not that I am a doctor lol😂) glad your ok though. I went to northern Italy last year by 1030 am. It was unbearable hot I just sat in the shade at the bar all day with Mrs K we didn’t do half of the sightseeing we wanted to do it was ridiculously hot . Anyway thought you did well great experience nice video Walking the hills of North Korea along border is much cooler although there’s no shops and you might get shot 😅 keep the videos coming it’s by far the best hiking you tube channel there is mate

Bummer! Heat makes it really hard to enjoy a hike, for sure. I got altitude sickness on a hike, and as much as I wanted to complete it, just couldn't do it - I couldn't eat enough, nauseous all the time, and that was that. There's always another hike.

I'd have gone home long before you mate. That heat is strength sapping coupled with the mileage and ascent/descent. Good for the auld tan though. I just put my pack in as checked in luggage with pegs and folding poles inside. I do take a brand new burner whenever I travel. They don't like smelly stoves in airport security. I have a lightweight airport bag that doubles as a rain cover so usually take that. I have a wee fold up rucsac that has my carry on electronics. I'm used to flying with gear as I have to get home to Scotland for walking by plane😂 Getting to France I just hop a ferry and take the train. Adds to the holiday. Nice overnight ferry trip and I like going by train. So,enjoyed the vid. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers mate, that’s exactly what I did on the way home. Dismantled the poles and put them in my rucksack as checked luggage. Carried my GoPro and Zoleo on with me. Put my claim in for compo for having to replace the stuff we lost. So hopefully get that back in a few days. The heat was too much on this occasion.

Hi Dave, check with your airline but I’m pretty sure poles definitely need to go in checked luggage. My top was the Outdoor Research Astroman sun hoodie. Worked really well, protecting me from sun and really fast drying. Hope its cooled off a bit by the time you go next month.

Got up on to the ridge past Sgurr Coire Choinnichean the next day with the intention of doing Ladhar Bheinn and it just wasn't happening. Boots felt like concrete, dry mouth and generally weak. Bad game management on my part. Was mid to high 20s and humid AF, so that's my excuse. Well played for putting it on your socials. Loads of folk wouldn't.

@@WalkWithWallace I did the northern half of the GR20 from Vizzavona to Calvi, around 15 years ago. The day that includes the Cirque de la Solitude looks the most daunting, but you're helped up the slabby bits by well fixed chains, and if I remember there's a ladder somewhere en route. It's a great trip. Fabulous scenery. We did it in mid June, before it got too stiflingly hot. There was still some snow around in some areas but nothing that needed any winter gear. We took tents which we pitched at the huts, and ate all our meals at the huts, so we didn't have to carry cooking stuff or loads of food. There's no wild camping allowed away from the areas around the huts. I keep meaning to go back to do the southern half. It's a great trek with stunning scenery.

If I’m honest you didn’t look comfortable from the kick off, no shame in bailing out if you’re not feeling it. Looked stunning but I can imagine it being brutal in the heat.

I think you’re probably right, day 1 was off on the back foot soon as our stuff went missing. Probably should have had a zero day earlier on in the trip and it might have been a different outcome. No regrets nevertheless.

​@WalkWithWallace I went on a holiday and climbing trip to chamonix about 22 years ago. My climbing pack never made it , lost at schipol. Got it back 2 months later. Fortunately it had stuff in I could borrow from the guide, buy or hire in Cham, like harness and jacket, my boots made it through or would have been stuffed. Still got to do the objectives like a few routes and climb mont blanc. Bizarrely, having filmed loads of stuff, like mont blanc, the video camera was stolen from the really quiet place we were staying, so lost the footage.
