Honestly thought Lakan was involved in this, until you saw his actual reaction of shock at the end of this episode. He didn't know, why would he let Maomao go in there if he did? Seeing almost killed in the state she was, and the look on his face. You knew Lakan had nothing to do with the assassination despite how they tried to make it seem so throughout episodes prior.

Him being a “gut feeling” guy, instead of analytical like maomao and luomen kinda makes sense with all his “almost planned” moments. TBF I think maomao also has gut instincts like her dad, but is controlled by luomen’s “don’t act on conjecture” line

yup it is pretty much the turning point for anyone who thinks Lakan is the main villain of the plot. his reaction wasnt in any way telling that he planned it all. if he wanted Jinshi dead, why he let his daughter into the temple? if hes a "psycho/sick fuck" that we were supposed to believe, why is he so shocked seeing his own daughter barely alive carried by Jinshi? a clear red herring of a character

I didn't rule him out completely at first though. His shock might have been seeing that Jinshi survived. But it didn't make sense that he'd let Maomao interfere if that was his plan. It could maybe have meant that he wanted her to see him die or that he wanted both to die. But then I discarded those hypothesis as things cleared up.

I hate to say it but even that someone who is caught up I to this day don't fully count him out granted I don't think he's the main villain anymore but until they outright say that he had absolutely nothing to do with it I feel as though a cone would have been fine with the happenstance of getting the opportunity to get his daughter back

She is the wildcard, the unknown variable, the hidden value because she is VERY aware of how precarious her role and standing is. Unfortunately she seems to also be very unaware how much social captial she's built up which she can cash in. Then again, maybe she doesn't want to? I dunno it's very odd. But this episode is definitely a turning point I feel with all the other episodes to come. Watch out things are about to get interesting.

I love this last scene of Jinshi carrying Maomao to his office. He is basically showing everyone "she's mine, don't ever hurt her again!" while everyone there ofc knows who he is and what his words mean to everyone. She doesn't know it yet, but she basically has protection of the state lol

And then you realize that the part that failed was made by the smith who died (the one who left the shop, cabinet, and fish bowl to his sons) to keep him quiet about having remade the metal pillar part using a soft metal that would melt under minimal heat stress.

Actually I think it was made by the son that ended up taking over. Lihaku said that the original pieces were only taken recently, so they probably had to remake them on short notice. If the father had made ceremonial pieces in the past and knew how the place was set up, he probably wouldn't have used lead since he knew it wouldn't hold. But his son has little knowledge of the ceremony setup, has just been introduced to this material and isn't fully aware of how it works under different conditions. He would probably not think anything of the order, and since lead's softness makes it easy to shape he'd probably have wanted to use it to make the fixtures as pretty as possible, not realizing how dangerous it could be.

In case people are wondering about Lakan's position in the army, one version of manga actually explains better. "Strategist" is super vague and is more a role than a position, in one version of the manga he's referred to as 太尉, which is Grand Commandant in English, basically modern equivalent would be chief of staff of the army. In ancient China, this position is on equal rank with the prime minister, and chief magistrate, as the highest ranking bureaucrat.

Lakan is creepy and a bad dad, but he's not a villain. I agree with other commenters. If lakan wanted jinshi dead to "free" maomao, then he wouldn't have let enter the temple where she could have gotten crushed. I think the writers wanted lakan to see the vilian becuz of his past with maomao, but im more weired out by that one woman that kept warning maomao about the herb hill.

Well... that was emotional. I will note as an LN reader I knew this was coming, but am quite pleased with the adaptation of this particular series of events, though it would appear my interpretation of the shrine area was... wildly off. I can't comment on much here due to spoiler prevention, and so instead my comment will instead focus on Maomao's reward. For those curious, the ox bezoar is used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat various diseases, and the like including high fever, convulsion and stroke. They are also absurdly rare, being formed from layers of calcium and magnesium phosphate build up around plant fibre or a pebble. There are induced, or artificial variants, but china has banned the result from multiple drugs (47 I think). It took some time for the bezoar to be used in the west, and was introduced via Arabian doctors in the 12th century (the 1100's AD), as a cure for arsenic. They were somewhat accurate on that count, but the belief that they were a universal cure for all poisons came about which was woefully inaccurate. Fans of Harry Potter may recall that professor Snape brought up the magical nature of a goat's bezoar in one of his lessons having this effect. This belief was proven false in 1567, when a French cook in the King's court was sentenced to death and chose to be poisoned rather than hanged, under the condition that he would be given a bezoar after the poison. The surgeon Ambroise Paré; who himself did not believe that it was possible for the bezoar to cure the effects of any poison, administered the bezoar to the cook, but it had no effect, and the cook died in agony seven hours after taking the poison. Modern examinations of the properties of bezoars show that when bezoars are immersed in an arsenic-laced solution, they can remove the poison. The toxic compounds in arsenic are arsenite and arsenate; each is acted upon differently by the bezoars: arsenite is removed by being exchanged for phosphate in brucite found in the stones, while arsenate is bound to sulphur compounds in the protein of degraded hair, which is a key component in bezoars.

The best part of it is that while Lakhan is _unquestionably_ a total scumbag and a manipulative psychopath, we suspected then and now know for sure he had _absolutely nothing to do with it_ and is just in shock that his one and only daughter nearly died and that he was the one that sent her into danger! Like, he's a complete bastard, but he still has the shriveled remains of a soul in his chest and as he's standing there, that horror is getting replaced with absolutely _INCANDESCENT_ rage.

Yeah, this episode is a RIDE. This isn’t a small-scale plot like Fengming’s. We’ve been watching pieces of a massive plan to assassinate the probable heir presumptive to the throne, and all without our ever knowing it until now. And it’s likely bigger than Suirei - I can’t be the only one who thinks it’s suspicious that that official was demoted when he started asking about how safe the beam was, and a court lady wouldn’t have had that authority. And now most of the palace is undoubtedly wondering WTF just happened, and the girl who knows is unconscious with a concussion. Who would benefit from Jinshi being dead?

In case some people don't seem to have got it yet, Lakan was 100% a red herring. Yes, he worked out the whole plot and did nothing to stop it (except direct Maomao towards it), but that's because he was intentionally giving Maomao a chance to work it out and stop it herself (both because she'd enjoy the mystery and because it would help her career). The real truth is that he's actually an adoring father who wants to get closer to her, but is simply too socially inept. His shock at the end was from realising how badly his plan had backfired when it came within a hair's breadth of getting his beloved daughter killed. He was never part of the assassination plot whatsoever.
