I thought the kiss was out of nowhere too, because I couldn't see any chemistry the two characters had, but opon re-watching the scene, I think it's Rhaenyra's shaky attempt at what she believes to be masculine sexual behavior. *MINOR SPOILER FOR A FEAST FOR CROWS!!!!!* Cersei Lannister, in an effort to see what "being Robert" was like (ie: sexually "conquering" a woman), has angry (on her part) sex with a female courtier of hers. I don't know if she is bisexual or not (maybe she is?) but it was mostly about seeing what she thinks "being a man" is like in her society. The way Rhaenyra talks about Daemon flouting societal customs and doing what he likes, and the way she acts as a woman trying to do the same thing as him in her own ways, may be the motive behind the kiss. She wants to be "a man" sexually as well as as a ruler. Or maybe I'm being too charitable, and it's just a classic HBO Moment™ that the writers added because they have no idea what to do with her character. Who knows?!?!

Yeah, there's definitely times where I think something makes sense but I'm unsure, as you said, being charitable to the writers lol for instance, I thought they were making the audience frustrated with Rhaenyra's situation and in a sense, putting us in her shoes with the frustration and powerlessness she's feeling in not being able to move forward her way. I think they showcased the Blacks in season 1, now season 2 is about showcasing the Greens. I hope everything is more balanced in the future!

Great idea! It also kinda makes sense considering her story with Cole, I think. She was in the position of power that time and used Christon out of frustrution with Daemon. Here she's also acting to "be in charge". However, I thought she was not the one initiating the kiss. So maybe, on the other hand, it indicates this time she's not that careless and selfish. But that would be a bit more boring :) Anyways, hasn't finished the season yet, so maybe it's not where it's heading.

Rhaenyra isn’t “doing nothing”. She’s acting. Just very poorly. She tried to get seasmoke a rider. She approved the food to Kings Landing. She reasserted her authority. She’s riding off to meet Seasmokes rider. She’s doing things. The problem is they’re not satisfying. This is a fault with the book. They’re attempting to weave her into something she’s not actually involved in yet. If it was the book version, she’d still be wailing over a miscarriage and Luke. That’s about all she’s referenced doing at this point. I think her being portrayed as a weak ineffective struggling leader is a good way to weave it in without changing too much. After all it’s an unreliable narrator so rather than saying she was a terrible leader she was doing “womanly” things. It makes sense.

this is something i agree with, and not something that people talk about enough. The show has had to fill in so many blank spaces in terms of “what is [insert character] doing at this time?”. it creates a slower feeling pace overall as the show works to catch every single character up with each event that happens, even though some of them don’t actually do anything in the source material for extended periods of time.

Another great video and awesome analysis! I think the main issue this season is facing is that at this point in the book Rhaenyra is essentially sitting around and doing nothing. You make reference to Rook's Rest and Rhaenys being ordered by Rhaenyra to go there in the book, but even that is only one account. In the two other accounts of the Rook's Rest, Rhaenys goes on her own volition because Rhaenyra is - once again - too grief struck to do anything in the story. That sort of inaction traps the writers of HotD in a bind. Rhaenyra in the source material is essentially doing nothing, so you have to come up with a better reason why she isn't being active other than her crying and grieving all season. Simultaenously, since they have to follow the book, they can't have Rhaenyra do anything too major that would have ripple effects that would mess up other parts of the story.

So, I'm a Black supporter, but even i thought S1 was slanted more towards them. I need to rewatch it after S2 ends. I think that the writers wanted to put R+D on the side on S2 to showcase the Greens more. I think the show could be more enjoyable if they showcased both sides equally without having to push one "team" to the side. I really enjoy Daemon's dreams. I can't wait for a super cut to just watch them all like a mini movie. But I also understand how people are frustrated with him being at Harrenhall like when people were frustrated with Daeny, i think it wa Myreen? And I'm not 100% sure if Rhaenyra's "stop mentioning daemon/i need to do something" is purposely putting us in her shoes about how powerless her council makes her (well, it's been like that her whole life, actually). So just like her, the audience understands her position, but we (as well as rhae) really want her to start doing something. Idk, maybe that's wishful thinking on my end/giving thw writer's credit for something that wasn't intentional lol I also think alys was controlling/communicating with Daemon telepathically. Maybe the last time they were physically in the same room was when she gave him the weirwood drink?

Compared to season 1 I'm not enjoying this 2nd season as much. 1st season is full on events, each episode something is happening, everything moves quick. Now in season 2 is a complete stalemate, it's been 6 episodes and it feels like almost nothing has happened in the story, the riverlords keep figting eachother while Daemon is in Harrenhal having hallucinations, Rhaenyra keeps sitting at Dragonstone doing nothing and so on. The only thing that happened was that dragon fight that made Aegon a crippled man, the Blood and Cheese and not much else...

Remind me, stop watching reactions from book readers, stick to the rest of the non readers...... This show is exceptional in its own rights, way better than most other shows these days. Besides GRRM are reminiding us that the books are written by meisters that was not there. I'd read the books later and stay happy i did not ruin the joy of the TV show.

Character B has been a victim of people of high blood but thinks Character A is the exception to the rule and is a good leader. Character B thinks Character A can indeed lead by herself Character B say she will stand by Character A no what and Character B is the only person that has constantly stood by Character A. So is it really that surprising a romantic feelings would be form between those characters? If Character A was male and Character B was female or vice versa nobody would be complaining. So if you just don't like gay kissing just say so. Stop pretending the story didn't set things up because it did.

@@zackery5678 Mysaria's character is also known to use seduction to move further up the board and gain power, especially with power people, it was literally her job as she told us so it could be using Rhaenyra's vunerable state to make it so she comes first to her for advice, not too dissimilar to what Lary's Strong is trying to achieve with Aegon.

I just think it would be odd if the kiss immediately made them lovers but possibly overtime? I also wish they hinted more at rhaenyra and alicent possibly being somewhat romantic.

The only thing that Rhaenyra/Mysaria scene accomplished was giving a certain sub-section of the Fandom fodder to complain about the "agenda" being forced down our throats. It really served no purpose narratively; in fact, more than that, it made no sense narratively. So we can skip Rhaena trying to claim a dragon, or cut the scenes of Baela & Rhaenys, but THIS is what made it to the final cut?? This, and the never-ending, meandering scenes of Damon in Harrenhal, are interesting inclusions to an already shortened season...

This episode and episode 3 are far and away the best 2 episodes of the season. The dialog and writing are so much better in those two episodes. It's almost like a different show depending on who wrote the episode, it's so noticeable. As far as the kiss goes, I can see a Rhaneyra Mysaria entanglement having an impact on the story so I'm ok with it. Which is what you can't say about the Alicent Cole BS that has no impact on the story and was just thrown in nonsense.

I cannot stand Mysaria. She’s clearly the writers baby and can do no wrong, it doesn’t matter she shouldn’t be trusted, she’s a woman who believes in Rhaenyra so she can do no wrong. That kissing scene was the most forced thing ever, especially for her to start kissing her neck after she just explained she got that scar from being a sex slave to her father, and then having her stomach and neck cut open by him and left her to die. Yeah, really turns me on.

I think her and Laris are both the same. they want power. and they want to warp the rulers to them. It seemed more like emotional manipulation. The queen held the embrace for so long, I could imagine Mysaria thinking this was the right move in the moment. similar to Little foot, in that he took his shot asking to be hand. He failed. Mysarias' worked.

If Mysaria had pulled away, Rhaenyra would now have to worry about her saying things and spreading rumors. Mysaria was forced into a position of intimacy by someone in power. This is the same as Aegon raping Dianna, except no kingsguard was there to interrupt that. Right after Mysaria talked about being a sex slave. No part of this scene works.

I completely disagree with the general consensus that the kiss was out of nowhere. Rhaenyra and Alicent's relationship could very easily be interpreted as romantic when they were young, even if they didn't realise it themselves, and the actress who played young Alicent who is queer herself said she interpreted and played the character that way. Rhaenyra is not going to be an out and proud bisexual in the very homophobic Game of Thrones universe. Rhaenyra and Mysaria clearly had chemistry, and after feeling abandoned by Daemon, unsupported by her council, and grieving for her son, it makes complete sense that she would have a moment of weakness with the one person who shows affection. I've heard some people say that the writers shouldn't have made Mysaria get frisky with Rhaenyra immediately after disclosing sexual trauma and it's uncomfortable to watch. I'm inclined to agree, however we don't yet know Mysaria's intentions, so I'm waiting to see how it plays out.

I find this show rushed overall. There are some good moments, but they consistently fail to show you things and for such an important character, Corlys is impotent. For them to not kill Leanor and do nothing meaningful, like divulge to his parents he’s still alive only to now have to his dragon bond with another. The scene was cool, but, I hate that for his parents who, until this moment, still have a dubious allegiance with Rhaenyra. The acting saves the show. 2 years and this is what we have? Not knowing the character’s motivations is hard to stomach. What’s the point of changing Helaena and not having her featured more prominently where people are understanding the significance of her musings? The kiss, hopefully, doesn’t become more. It would have been just as effective in showing she’s found someone she can trust without it becoming romantic.
