One thing I really liked was how cosmo and Wanda picked Hazel themselves. It’s the only time I can remember them being enthusiastic about their job and it really set the stage for their relationship being centred around teaching life lessons. I’d really love it if we got more interactions between hazel’s parents and her godparents a bit like on founders day when she was running around with C&W while her parents sold books. It feels very natural for the neighbours to babysit occasionally, and I feel like it makes the premise a little more relatable.

In the OG series, Cosmo and Wanda basically acted as full-time surrogates for Timmy, since his own parents couldn’t even be bothered to do the bare minimum 90 percent of the time. Hazel doesn’t have that problem, as Marcus and Angela are openly supportive of their daughter and just seem to struggle with work-life balance. In her case, Cosmo and Wanda come across more as the quirky uncle and aunt who try to help nudge Hazel out of her comfort zone.

I love the parents’ nickname for their daughter; Hazelnut (and the one her older brother gave her; Small-Fry). That’s just so cute. And I also like the fact that Hazel’s parents are NOT neglectful, brain-dead morons who are constantly going on about how happy they would be if they didn’t have kids, and … they also have actual names. Seriously, fuck Mr and Mrs Turner. But in all honesty, one thing that this reboot has over the original series is that most of the adults at the very least are trying to be helpful and benevolent compared to the original where those adults would range from being useless at best to unfunny at worst. Now, while her parents being loving and supportive of their daughter does kinda defeat the purpose of Hazel receiving fairies, on the other hand Mr and Mrs Turner got so unfunny as time went on, so really, I can give it a pass in that regard.

At first, this show caught me by surprise, as I had no idea why FOP improved so much all of a sudden. But then I saw a video by a youtube channel named Ghosted, which presented a theory that Cosmo and Wanda hating eachother was actually the root cause of most of the problems that ruined the original show, with one problem leading to another in a chain reaction. And that conversely, A New Wish fixing Cosmo and Wanda's relationship is what lead to a bunch of other problems getting fixed as a consequence. At some point in the original show, Cosmo and Wanda started hating eachother, which then caused both of them to get flanderized where Cosmo got dumber and Wanda got smarter so that they could both make fun of eachother. Which then caused Timmy to become even more reckless, selfish and vengeful with his wishes, because otherwise Wanda would be way too smart to let disasters occur. This already causes the show to become an unpleasent mess, which the writers then try to solve by making Cosmo even dumber and more reckless in an attempt to make him funny, which only ends up making the show even worse. This culminates in them trying to add new characters in yet another desperate attempt to save the show without knowing why it got so bad to begin with. And the reason why A New Wish suddenly improved so much is because Cosmo and Wanda being nice to eachother again removes the seemingly inocuous root that was causing many of the other problems.

i'm gonna be real: as an adult, the new shows tone hits a lot better than the og. they're right. hazel and dev are literally just timmy and remmy buxaplenty but less aggravating and done much better, giving them actual motivations and traits that balance out their flaws. the issue with timmy is that he was always kind of a selfish little prick who often failed to consider the consequences of his actions, was never really allowed any sort of character progression and frankly as an adult that can get grating (a la cailou). it's a lot more entertaining and easier to relate to if most of these problems are instead caused by forces around hazel or her own lack of perspective (because she's, you know, a child). hell, even dev's whole arc feels more real than anything in the og show. the tone for a new wish is also less... cynical? which is also really cool in an age where mean spirited comedy & outlooks have pretty much worn out it's welcome with everyone. it also... weirdly harkens back for me to the nicktoons of olde, back in the kid empowerment era. i'm not sure quite how to put it into words, but for content i've never seen before for a show i came to feel was meh at best over the years, this made me feel like it was the mid-2000s for a second there. it was absolutely wonderful. i also wanna point out tho that the time fairy etc are all things established in the original show. the fairly odd parents is weird bc when you think about it, or at least the way i look at it - faeries are just kind of a for-hire version of how greek gods sorta work sometimes? like time isn't just a thing here, it's dictated by a person, a person with flaws who can be tricked. i think it's something hartman tried to sidestep, but it literally is just the concept of having a god of something without resorting to the term. that said, these characters don't need depth to be just part of how the universe works. the slow trickling in of all these characters is more just slowly resubmerging us in the decades worth of mythos and worldbuilding the previous series did, usually tweaking them just slightly so that they work a little better in a show w/ continuity.

I love the contrast in how wishes can go bad for both godchildren For Timmy his wishes go bad because of how selfish they are and only fixes them when they are a problem for him … and never learns and does it again For Hazel even with some of her more selfish wishes she genuinely means well but her attempts to help aren’t always the right thing to do … it’s a good character flaw tbh she means well but she makes mistakes basically meaning it fixes the flaw that Chloe had Hazel’s heart is in the right place but she isn’t perfect and still has a lot of growing up to do

They made Poof work by...giving him to the rival character. Honestly that creates so much interesting dialogue with the protagonist having Poof's parents; it's good to have some believable friction between characters, ya know? But yeah, weirdly, this is kinda the same problem Rugrats had that its spinoff sequel, All Grown Up, also solved: Dill actually being more interesting "all grown up" because we get to actually see a character be a bleeding character. I don't remember what review it was, but you kinda hit the nail on the head, "Babies aren't really so much characters as they are props." Go figure, how to make a baby a character is to...age them up. The fact that Rugrats had this solved several years before Poof's debut episode is just bonkers; Butch just...does not learn from history, does he? (Don't answer that, it was a rhetorical question. >.>) Eh, either way, all told, given from what I've seen so far, I'm very eager to see what direction they take this show in. It's very rare to have reboots that do BETTER than the original, but in recent years, this seems to be a trend that's been steadily growing, and I hope it stays on that track. We need more reboots, ESPECIALLY sequels like this, to establish what went wrong and fix the problems, whilst building upon the original framework in a meaningful way that feels like a genuine and organic extension to the established canon & lore, all whilst being viewed through fun and engaging characters that you either like because of their genuine charm factor, or hate for all the RIGHT reasons...but don't want to see less of them, and I think from what I'm seeing, this show is managing to tick those boxes quite nicely. It's refreshing to have the spoiled rich kid not be a complete ass for once; I like that. :3

To quote Doug Walker, one of the main appeals of that show is that "the characters are incredibly sweet, despite them living in a world that's very cynical and obviously plays on this predetermined fate that some of these characters are never gonna get what they want." I feel that afterwards, the "sweet and genuine characters living in a cynical world" has kinda been the norm in animation.

this is probably the most through and positive review of FOPANW ive seen so far. i love how you went super in depth into the NEW characters and content and why this NEW vibe works so well. every other review is just like "omg they put my fav from the original in and treated them well!!1" and "i wonder where timmy is? wheres timmy? is that timmy?" and "poof is the newest tumblr sexyman i guess" while completely misunderstanding his character and place in the plot. if you only heard about this show through osmosis online, especially on yt, you would think dev is the main character and everything is about him and poof. you ACTUALLY talk about hazel and how she stacks up to the og and fares on her own and reference things she did in episodes that ARENT "a new development", "operation birthday takeback", or the finale "the battle of big wand". this makes your review feel more grounded and genuine as if you actually watched the show instead of drooled over the fandom highlights and tumblr sexyman memes. and you shared many interesting opinions as you did so. i agreed with how you respectfully pointed out how negative and mean the show was esp later on and how its refreshing to see more positive shows like anw in modern day without completely trouncing on everything that era/flavor of tv had to offer. though i do think the meaness was a main reason why the seasonal rot was so intense and the show became hard to watch later on. i especially like the indepth look at hazel vs chloe and how its the different writing approaches that make hazel work and chloe not. most other reviews just go "waaah its not timmy its some annoying girl and i want timmy back.. but at least she isnt AS bad as chloe :/" too many of these reviews reduce hazels personality to pointing out the gap in her teeth just like chloe as if that says anything about her and thats all they touch upon. i especially applaud you for making a fopanw review that doesnt mention Not Timmy™at all. too many people are just here for the nostalgia and are just waiting for their fanservice and references. while i watched the og as a kid too and enjoyed the crocker and vicky episodes, i dont believe or wish for any of those characters to become mainstays or for timmy to actually return at all. its actually incredibly ironic how multiple reviewers will note how constant rehashing of ips and cash cows is bad for the media 'environment' so to say, and then spend the rest of the video asking for timmy and whining about Not Timmy and acting like the only episode in this show are the vicky and crocker episodes and talking about the fragility of "handling callbacks well without dragging them out" i want more hazel and the dream team content. i think they wrapped up cookie way to quick in her second episode and i want her out of jail. i want that episode in the pitch bible covering peri and devs childish boss vs overworked intern dynamic. i want to see more winn and jasmine. i even want more gags with hazels creepy landlords. in fact... even just a 2 second cameo of timmy would be BAD for the show! The way theyve handled everything so far is really good! im impressed and i trust the writing team. i want to see what beautiful things they can create on their own with the new characters as well as old. i dont want them to use nostalgia as a crutch. The fandom is literally clinging to old memories in fear of change like hazel did in "fearless", an episode it feels like 90% of the fandom didnt even bother to watch cuz its all "poof" this and "timmy" that. sorry for the 5 page essay.. i just like to talk a lot abt cartoons lol.. TLDR: this video is a really great in depth review that respects the new content as well as the old without falling into nostalgia blindness or fandom highlight pitfalls. a lot of the points you make are well informed and interesting as a result.

I wanted to see who Cosmo and Wanda would move onto next! Very often, the original show brushes up against how Timmy would have to get older and say goodbye eventually. I wanted to see that part of the story! Seeing Cosmo and Wanda's next kid, with characters from the original series coming in occasionally in new roles - that is the direction I was interested in as a kid, not... magic babies and magic dogs and live action Drake Bell. I like that Timmy isn't around but his actions hang over this setting. Insane comparison but it feels like a JRPG sequel where you're seeing the new main character butt up against decisions made by someone they have nothing to do with.

3:08 I think that example from Gumball really says it all as to why FOP (& Butch Hartman) Characters end up usually looking bad or unappealing when translated into 3D! Characters like Timmy, Chester, Cosmo, Wanda and ESPECIALLY Crocker & Timmy's Parents were designed to mainly look good from the SIDE! They're designs (whether it be the hair, the face or the portions) were just NOT meant to be seen or drawn in certain angles, such as Front-Facing! So, when you try to force their 2D designs into a Fully 3D Space, certain style aspects (such as the curved sideways mouth) will inherently end up looking off, creepy or hideous, even if model is pretty faithful to the original 2D design...
