150 grand might take care of him when he's old and needs assistance. I didn't watch the video so I don't know but I can speak from experience within my family. Some people are afraid of being left when they are old. My grandmother has over 500 grand in the bank and is very frugal, not on this guys level though. My parents moved her down to gulf shores when they retired into a nice apartment 5 miles from their house and she knows my mom a retired nurse would never abandon her. My grandmother never wants to be a burden or alone and that stash in the bank she's been saving will keep her well taken care of for the rest of her days if something happened.

@@nevoso investing in an index fund is ALWAYS going to make you more money than saving (putting the same amount in a savings account vs investing that amount in say a S&P 500 account). Even if you put lump sums in saving at the lows of the value of the dollar, you will make more with an index in the same amount of time. It's obvious that you don't know much about investing, but there are many many different types of investing. you are right that for something like stock trading you wouldn't want to do it with no savings because you could get screwed, but for index funds, mutual funds etc you won't need to worry about that.
