I just discovered your channel today! I watched all your videos on Jon and Kate Plus 8, it was so interesting to have someone else’s view on it as I watched it as the episodes came out. You should watch 16-17-20? Kids and counting!

17/18/19 Kids and Counting has FIFTEEN seasons so if I do start watching it, it’ll have to be in a different format than this because of how long these videos take. HOWEVER, next week’s video will be about the “Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets” documentary!

It seems like the Plath family lightened up as the kids have gotten older, but I’m so confused how Olivia and Ethan even met and fell in love with Kim around.

Their parents were all connected through church and most likely bonded over their quiverful families and children around the same ages. Anyway, Kimplayed match maker back when Olivia was still deeply religious and even managed to manipulate meetings to the point where both Olivia and Ethan started courting and eventually got engaged and married.

They live 2 miles from us ! I am from Cairo . They are the minority. Micah and Moriah are the nicest people and speak to everyone. They are not snobby. Micah goes out of his way to speak to my husband. I hate the nicest ones don’t live here anymore.

Great video. Love your calm and personal commentary. You did a great job recapping the season in just 44 minutes. Can’t wait to watch the next one! Oh and thank you for the awesome audio quality, I usually listen to these videos ‘podcast style’ while doing other things and hate it when creators don’t use a microphone.

"I have to agree with Kim on this one." I agree with you (and Kim) on this one particular point [though I also don't think it's the HUGE deal Kim is making it]. It would be best practice to let everyone know in the future, sure, and Olivia can learn that in the future-- when she's in a nonthreatening social situation in the future that's actually conducive to that kind of learning. This situation lacks the necessary reservoir of grace that would allow *anyone* to learn from their mistakes without condemnation. But I'm certain Olivia can learn in the future as she heals. One of the hardest lessons I've learned leaving my abusive family of origin is that they were not wrong 100% of the time. I recently told my therapist that I didn't want to be their puppet anymore, moving with each string they pulled (or would have pulled). I also didn't want to be their "anti-puppet", doing exactly opposite of what they would have done simply because I know the script I was supposed to follow. Both are exhausting. I just want to live a life that is completely free of strings. Many things I do will be different, a few might be the same. I just have to fight my knee jerk repulsion to any ideas that they would have approved of, so long as it's an idea that I legitimately want to follow. Thanks for your outside analysis of this show. It's provided a lot of fodder for me and my therapist to work through.

I remember in high school when the “homeschool kids” would come to school… 9 times outta 10 they were ill equipped (to say the least) socially, emotionally and mentally to deal with the chaos of 1200 high school kids in 1995. Scholastically the “homeschool kids” fell in to one of two categories- waaay advanced and taking like, all AP classes OR completely lost and barely scraping by grade wise… It was always kinda sad to me. You’d see em come in- middle of the year, lived in the same subdivision as 1/2 of your school yet knows •no one• dressed like a stereotypical “Young Republican”- NEVER jeans or on trend tennis shoes. Skirts (below the knee!) and khaki pants for the dudes… always a collared shirt, girls ALWAYS wore those little white Keds (1995 remember?)…they stood out in so many ways, at an age when most kids wanted to just melt into the floor…

I’m christian, i gew up in christian household, and what i’ll never understand about my upbringing is that the protection and strictness was useless. I had to take a job and function in a society that I didn’t know anything about, cause’ my parents didn’t prepare me for the world, they were controlling and still are. As a mother myself i’m understanding that i have to protect my kids but not in this way. I can’t as a parent force them to be chistians, and do what I consider the right thing. They are following my rules only under my roof, when they are outside the can behave whatever they want cause’ I can’t be with them24/7. So if I’m gonna behave like my parents my kids are gonna do everything that i did wrong growing up. In order to have trust you have to allow as a parent that your kid isn’t going to choose what is good every time, they have to make their own mistakes in order to learn and develop healthy. As christians we pary for them nonstop that is all we can do, cause’ once they are married and are living alone you can’t come in their house and dictate what you expect from them. For some parents this is very hard to understand. We can guide them but only if they want to allow advice from us. And in order to protect my kid i have to explain the consequences of their actions, and every bad thing in the world cause’ sooner or later they gonna learn about drugs, alcohol, partying, so if they don’t know anything how they can be aware about the danger? I don’t want for them to do this things behind my back, I want to know what party are they, where are they going and if something happens always call mom cause’ I’m gonna be there regardless of the state are they in. My parents were so scared about sex and me getting pregnant at an an inappropriate age and they didn’t discuss safe sex and protection. Every time i was trying to ask something they’ll say that why I want to bring this subject up cause’ it’s inappropriate and uncomfortable. 🙃 in every circumstance when they said no i got my yes and do whatever I wanted without them knowing, so is this way better? How? For them then to go to church and say that I obey and i’m a good kid, umm no i can hide very well it’s sad that you don’t know anything about me and my personality and it is concerning. To this day they don’t want to accept that i tried cigarettes and they don’t believe me, cause’ that would mean that their parenting style wasn’t the best. Cause i was behaving in a way at home and totally different outside. As I said I don’t want this to be the case with my kids.

When I was a kid, my parents weren’t this bad but they were definitely on the path of it. We were home schooled and only had friends that were also home schooled and were definitely a lot like these people. When I (the oldest) were fixin to go into high school I begged my parents to let me go to public school and surprisingly they let myself and my other siblings go to public school. I’m very grateful that they let us experience it. Academically I didn’t do well but besides that, I had a normal awesome high school experience. My siblings however, had a hard time socially. Looking back, they were just trying to do what they thought was best for us but I’d highly suggest not to shelter your kids.

I've never seen this show and they all seem like very sweet people but I'm confused. Why was the oldest not allowed over when his parents weren't home? Why after raising them so sheltered, away from the reality of our world today, then allow cameras and a reality TV show to come in and expose them so quickly? I'm genuinely curious.

The mom is always moving the goalpost. She didn’t trust the son and so now says the reason they don’t trust him is because he broke a rule they put in place because they said they don’t trust him. It’s like being arrested for resisting arrest when you didn’t break the law in the first place. And the parentification of the one daughter? She’s a f*cking single mother at 15. She wants to work on asking for help raising her siblings when she gets too overwhelmed? No. EEEH. Wrong. Try again. She should not be having to ask for help at all. She should not be responsible for feeding, bathing, clothing, teaching or cleaning for aaaaaaaanyone at that age. Outside of normal chores that child should be out riding her bike, playing with friends and learning to drive. How dare they manipulate her into thinking her siblings are HER responsibility. The gaslighting is so insane. These children are having midlife crises from the stress of living as an adult hermit against all of their wills. Their cortisol levels must be through the roof. This is just so unhealthy for everyone involved. The “alternative medicine”. The purity culture. The isolation. The fear of cities and college. The homeschooling. The fact that staunch, conservative Christian churches were too liberal for them is saying everything. And the dad has to incoherently mumble in riddles just to make sense of it all to himself but he’s not really convincing anyone, is he? The mom especially is earning herself a one way ticket to the nursing home the MINUTE these kids get the option. There’s no chance they’ll want her in their homes when they finally escape her clutches. Can she not see that she is repeating her mother’s cycle of trauma just in a different flavor? Imagine having all of those kids and not a single one of them likes you or wants to be anything like you. How is this legal? This has to be some kind of child abuse/neglect. Each one of these kids qualifies as a “failure to thrive” under her care. The older sister didn’t even know what a sorority was when her mother was IN a whole ass sorority? Thats purposeful brainwashing. Rootbeer floats were a dirty little secret? Having a successful music or modeling career is shameful? Having secular dreams of any kind is a sin? I am just so astounded by these parents level of density. How can they not see that this is just pure cruelty and extreme psychological abuse. They’re running a cult.

I’m still a Christian because I discovered that the stuff I was taught differed so much from what the Bible ACTUALLY taught. Purity culture does nothing but hurt people, especially kids and I’m unlearning all of it. For me it was so bad that I couldn’t kiss my boyfriend on the lips for over 3.5 years of our relationship because I was so scared of getting in trouble and I had been convinced my whole life that if you started kissing then you would immediately jump into sexual sin. Purity culture is terrible and does nothing but damage kids. Instead of teaching kids to not do anything we need to teach our kids self control like the Bible ACTUALLY teaches so they don’t grow up hating themselves for completely normal and natural feelings.
