It's more than that though. Many followers of these people have seen them grow their channels so they feel an affinity with them and even some sort of ownership. Similar to when someone listens to a band during their early career that goes on to be very big. The problem is they actually have no idea what they're really like because their content will generally be scripted and edited to show a certain side of themselves. Some influencers realise they can take advantage of that feeling of affinity. There's the low end where ppl sell generally crappy merch all the way up to these kind of scams.
