“My dad bought this car in 1974 when it was a year old, and so was I a year old,” says Matthew Lange. “He bought it to use every day, and in fact, it was his company car.”
It’s quite rare to see a 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 “Daytona” pressed into daily service, racking up nearly 40,000 miles in the process. Lange’s dad passed the car onto him at 30-much earlier than promised, so that his son could enjoy the car.
“It just puts a big smile on my face, getting behind the wheel and driving this car,” he says. “But when I first got the car, it scared me. A lot.” With more power and less grip than he was used to, he had to learn how to operate the 12-cylinder “Daytona.”
Now, he takes it on long drives with his wife to central Europe, racking up thousands of miles in the process-something the car was built to do from the outset. With the same trusted mechanic for around 30 years, Lange says it frees up and starts to drive much better once the miles pile up.
“It’s a car to use, it’s certainly not in concours condition,” Lange says, “I like to keep it that way, I don’t want to spend my money polishing it up nice to win a trophy.”
With the intention of keeping it in the Lange family, this stunning “Daytona” will live on through generations to come, all with the promise of using it on the open road-where the car was meant to be.

*****.....A V-12 Jag with 4 Strombergs sounds NOTHING like that but a Shelby Daytona Coupe with 4 Webers & mufflers does. The sound of an engine with individual throttle plates is distinctive.
@richardharrold9736
@richardharrold9736 9 жыл бұрын
***** Sure, but Jag V12s never came with Strombergs as original equipment, did they? Put Webers on a Jag and it won't sound too different - although of course they were SOHC (apart from a few prototype engines). You'll never get eight cylinders to sound like twelve though.

Covid brought Petrolicious to me and kept me sane when working from home, these videos really are fantastic escapism. Best listened to on headphones (earbuds) for the true engine sounds. The Daytona is the only classic car my wife ever passed comment on..."I like the look of that one"....no matter how many times I point out these rolling works of arts shape and sound. Also I wonder if damp British roads and a British accent evoke the same ethereal feelings as the videos of the countless classics snaking through the LA hills on H2. I think I may have to make my own video.....in Bedfordshire and see if it can be done...inspired by Petrolicious, their videos and surprisingly, the car owners seem..... very nice!

These things were designed as long-distance Grand Tourers. Miles is what they need, and it's refreshing to see someone who actually understands that. Too often I've seen people bemoaning the unreliability of the car they've had sat in a garage for four months doing nothing. Yes, the carbs are going to be gummed up with residue, yes, the points are going to be a little corroded, yes, you will need to charge it up and pump up the tyres and give it a really good shakedown. And then, of course, they go and pootle about some fancy city neighbourhood for a while rather than taking it for a good run and it won't restart because it's all sooted up. I'd like to work for a company who give out top of the line Ferrari GT cars as company cars!

The country lane with the big vista and some industrial buildings in the far distance is the one used for the Shere hillclimb, and I also spot the eastbound dual-carriageway section of the A246 between West and East Clandon. The church and cottages are Old Woking.

In the summer of '74 when I read car magazines all the time... I was driving by a car dealership one day and recognized a Maserati Bora parked there...I swung around and started looking at it...there were 3 men standing in the parking lot and I asked who's car it was...they pointed to the young guy in the middle and said they were both his...I was so fascinated by the Bora I hadn't noticed the Ferrari 365 GTB 4 right beside it...He said he'd give me a ride but he had somewhere to go...after he left I started talking to one of the other guys and mentioned a Detomasa Pantera and he said the guy had one of those too. He took me in the garage to see the pantera, beside a corvette, beside a camero and they were all his... This guy was in college... Needless to say his father was very rich...
