Agreed. As much as it pains me to say it, Dierdre could've been played by someone else and it wouldn't -really- change too much, but I cannot imagine this movie WITHOUT Stephanie Hsu. She carried ALL that emotional weight in such a connectable way, and I'm sad she isn't getting MORE recognition for it.

Agreed. These awards are always a bit silly, with one of the sillier parts being 'momentum' which JLC seems to have around the best supporting but Stephanie is closer to a co-lead and has a lot more scenes. JLC was stellar and I am not mad at her winning but if you have to choose, it is Stephanie, then JLC, then the others.

I am a queer, eldest daughter and 1st generation Asian American and I feel like this movie was literally made for me. I was laughing and ugly crying w snot running down my face for the last 30-40 minutes if the movie but, if I could experience watching this movie for the first time again, I would. This movie changed something w/in me fundamentally and has made me kinder, not only to myself but, to other ppl as well. I found bits and pieces of myself and my own parents in Evelyn, Waymond and Joy and I definitely resonated with Joy’s depression and nihilistic view of the world. This movie couldn’t have come at a better time for me tbvh. The themes of nihilism and absurdism, a crazy multiverse woven into a simple story about a mother reconnecting with her husband and daughter is something I’ve never seen before and is definitely the best film I’ve ever seen. If you ever have the opportunity to watch the movie properly on a movie theater screen, you definitely should!

@MDaggatt Жыл бұрын
@princessjello People already do ridiculous things to get people into the theaters. They strapped Tom Cruise to the outside of an actual plane just because they thought it would be cool even without an award! Giving them an award will just give stunt men and women the recognition they deserve as an already underpaid and underapreciated field. It may even lead people to start listening to stunt workers about the issues they currently have as they would have a platform to talk about them for the first time. For example, many stunt women have concerns about the fact that they are put in increasingly revealing costumes, as it means they cannot wear the appropriate padding and safety gear that they need to do their jobs, yet no one is listening to them. Plus, good stunts aren't always dangerous, and dangerous stunts aren't always good. Everything Everywhere All at Once would have easily won that category if it existed, and their stunts weren't any more dangerous than the stunts in most movies. They were just very good.

The 25 million budget was just an estimate, the real one is just 14.7 million. They had less than 40 shooting days, and four of those were the two rock scenes which caused them no end of problems because it was unbearably hot. They added one scene as a reshoot after the first test audiences were confused why the movie focused so much on Joy: The few seconds of her driving away crying. The movie so incredibly amazing and they made it with a budget other people don't even leave their bed for.

I watched it twice in theatres one year apart and ugly cried both times. Then in the last few days, I've been watching videos about it online, including yours and I cried again as well. The story and the delivery is so grounded despite the premise being so fantastical and absurd. At moments I feel like I am Evelyn, second guessing the choices I've made, longing to have been more, regretting in silence behind a "just get a move on" attitude. I'm doing my taxes, looking at the low numbers and wondering is this all that I am, all that I'll amount to? At times, I am Joy, the daughter that can't seem to be good enough for her mother, the constant struggle with the world and with myself, flirting with thoughts like I'm tired and nothing matters. Craving understanding yet can't help feeling like it should all end. Then there are moments and people in my life like Waymond, optimistic and hopeful, not out of naiveté but as a fighter too. People who say I would rather be doing laundry and taxes with you and mean it. People who make this life ... Worth it ...

One of the best movies I have ever seen. I did not expect to like this movie so much. I trend not to like over-hyped movies. But I was blown away by this one.

Even a simple thing like the rock falling off the cliff to be with the other rock reminded me of Robin Williams's character in What Dreams May Come deciding to stay with his depressed wife in hell. Powerful.

The $25m figure that's usually get mentioned was an estimate. The actual budget is $14.3m (according to NYT). You can also see the Daniels mentioning the budget being just below $15m in their Film Independent keynote video (you an find it on KZbin).
