The Substance is a 2024 satirical body horror film written, directed, co-edited, and co-produced by Coralie Fargeat. It follows a fading celebrity (Demi Moore) who, after being fired by her producer (Dennis Quaid) due to her age, uses a black market drug that creates a much younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley) with unexpected side effects.

This film is the most creative personification of self hatred I've seen in years. Like the dilemma of "Why can't I be like that again?" Vs. "I will never be like that." I was wincing in my seat in the theater.

It was very notable to me how Elizabeth/Sue never had any feminine supports through the movie, they only ever had men ogling them and telling them their value, it really adds another layer of heartbreak for me how alone she was. She could’ve been saved if she only had a friend I swear

Fun fact!! Margaret Qualley was wearing prosthetic boobs while playing Sue. So, when we as viewers are watching Sue's "perfect" body we're seeing an actress wearing prosthetics bcs that body type is literally so unattainable that not even THE Margaret Qualley reaches the standard that the movie tries to critique (plus, a whole lot of hair extensions too). So, Margaret had to be "glamed up" to play Sue. It serves as an interesting observation on how not even the younger, more "conventionally attractive" actress fits the beauty standard perfectly (and honestly, WHO does????)

The misogyny only STARTS the movie, but overall theme of self acceptance youth culture is what this film is about that can apply to anyone. Demi herself has championed that in a lot of her interviews. This guy is totally narcissistic for pandering to just the female perspective

11:20 the symbolism for the corridor being so gross and sketchy and the room being so pristine and perfect is exactly the purpose of the substance. Elisabeth (they’re insinuating) is old and decrepit on the outside. While her inner Sue is pristine and perfect inside.

something i haven't seen anyone really catch onto is that we know she was an actress when she was younger, but we don't know a lot about Elisabeth's life, so i immediately took her being able to competently build a door as evidence that she might come from a working class background. also tiling and doors aren't terribly hard to do so it's something she could have learned easily at a young age plus we see that she is a capable cook, too. one of the tragic elements of this film is that she thinks being on the screen is the only thing she can do, but she clearly has real, actionable skills that she could rely on.

I think it should be recognized that the movie also comments on female generational relationships. Think about it, older women are often portrayed as evil villains in fairy tales (stepmother, witch, etc.) who seek to suppress or exploit their younger counter parts. Young girls are taught very early to distrust older women. I think this is a travesty since both parties can learn from each other.

Well I don't know old dudes are portrayed as evil often as well EX: sorcerers, lichs, most demons, vampires, the devil himself. Right even as soon as the funky finger comes in to play everyone starts calling her a witch almost every reactor and it could be just an old person's finger in general... there's symbolism on so many levels in this movie and how we treat things that age or they call old chrone. ALSO an avatar for not being in your own self we are all doing an internet otherwise using her other body as avatar not loving self having own self life. Or even how EVERYONE like fred f*ck off then soon as she is desperate he is seen as nice guy. How do we know he could be biggest creep, also Don't just settle message in here I think. And can't put self love worth only in how others look at. Mashed thoughts but you certainly catch what mean lol.

A couple of things came to mind while watching this movie. First, This filmmaker is very influenced by David Cronenberg and I think of Videodrome, The Fly and Dead Ringers with a splash of David Lynch with The Elephant Man. Secondly, It's so true to life how we give the young, hot it girl the keys to the kingdom and when they reach a certain age, we cast them aside like an old glove. Third, This also brings to mind the Batman villain Clayface as depicted in The Animated Series in that he was an actor who suffers a horrible accident and is permanently disfigured only to be given a cosmetic that creates instantaneous results. Only when the cosmetic is misused does it create horrible side effects resulting into a being that has the ability to transform. Lastly, It also brings to mind Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Grey and Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Also, If it were shot in black and white and released in the 1950's, It would pass as an episode of The Twilight Zone.

Also, no one ever talks about Fred, even though he has very little screentime. I think he's an interesting character because, at first glance, it seems like he's going to be like all the other men in this film. As in, he seems a little pushy, immediately commenting on her looks ('I still think you're the most beautiful girl in the whole wide world'). However, when it comes to the phone call, it seems to imply that he genuinely wants to know her and is just socially awkward. I've definitely met people like that before where I've put my guide up and misjudged them.

28:20 I couldn't disagree more with you (respectfully)! To say "you can do so much better than Fred" when you really don't know anything about him shows exactly the mindset that's basically the root of Elizabeth's problems - people judging people based on physical appearances and superficial minutiae! To say something like that under the given conditions is pretty much buying into to the whole worthy-because-beautiful-/-unworthy-because-not-as-beautiful bias. It further cements the "trap" people, who's social status is mostly based in their physical attractiveness, are in - people are only interested in you because of your beauty, and only people as beautiful as yourself deserve getting to know you. With a mindset like that there is almost no way for anyone to reach someone like Elizabeth on a meaningful and emotionally healthy level, trapping them in perpetual, self-sustaining loneliness ... as perfectly depicted in this jewel of a movie.

Oooooh, I totally see your point! I was meaning (and I cut it out for some reason) that I found Fred a bit too overbearing and pushy. He seemed more like ‘stalker’ vibes at first. So when I said that she could do better, yes I meant superficially because of his looks (which is bad on my part tbh), but also because he seemed a bit too domineering. But I totally see your point, it’s very interesting how complex this film is. The layers it has and how you can easily fall into the trap that the characters are also putting themselves into without realising! Thanks for your comment 💚

I was addicted to heroin/opioids for years, but I still can't stand needles. I'm from the East Coast of the USA, so it was all powdered when I started, and believe me when I say I was in for a rude awakening when I moved to Colorado and all I could find was tar.... Obviously I don't recommend either, my point is just that I couldn't even fuck with needles when that was the "easiest" and most viable option back while I was still doing that shit. I don't even like getting blood work done at the doctor's

What did Fred do to you man? Hes like the one guy who's actually a good person in the entire movie. Bros probably just judging him based on looks, which is incredibly ironic considering the story

It’s wild and crazy and insane… but at the heart of it, it’s terribly tragic !!

When I watched this movie with my friends I ended up quietly sobbing for much of the last quarter of the movie. My friends enjoyed the camp horror aspects while the tragedy of the film hit me in a completely different way. Had to go online to see if anyone else cried watching it!
