on the west coast of Fla. I have seen 6 ft sharks and large stingrays swimming in and around people within 20-30 ft of shore. I quit going to the beach after Jaws. I was waiting for one of you to tell the other, "You're gonna need a bigger boat,” lol

Look up "Malibu Artist." Routinely records great whites within 10 yards of swimmers and surfers.

That Heavy Hellcat is rated the same as the Ugly Stik Tiger Medium Heavy casting rod I would use for sturgeon where you might hook a larger fish of 150-200 lbs.

I like the Ugly Stik Tiger rods….they’re a good bang for your buck….

Dieter the smaller sharks you caught were all sandbars. The bigger one you caught and did not bring in the boat was a "finetooth"
@DieterMelhorn Жыл бұрын
Good read on the sandbar. I thought that’s what they were, but I mix them up with dusky’s sometimes. The sandbar dorsal is over the pectoral, and the dusky is totally behind the pectoral fin?? How did you make the quick ID son the finetooth???

Hey Dieter have you tried the Arc dehooker? Works really well and you get your hooks back.

Ironically I have broke two hellcats on flatheads mid fight so was super unimpressed. They did send me new ones atleast which is nice but won’t fish them anymore

The great thing is if it’s a manufacturing defect they’ll replace it.

If I was still shark fishing I would pick up one of those Hellcats. They seem like great rods! What reel do you have matched to it? I no expert, but I think the first one was a sandbar. I use to target blacktips when I lived in Myrtle Beach.
@DieterMelhorn Жыл бұрын
The sandbars and dusky’s get me confused….it’s an Ancient Mariner 7000 series reel.

@@DieterMelhorn thank you so much. What is the price range of the rod and reel?

I've been surprised at how much weight my cheap rods have held.

I attempted to catch a shark from the Tybee Pier this summer with my Mad Katz rod. I put half a whiting on a shark rig from Amazon and chucked it out as far as I could with the drag loose and the clicker on. About half an hour later, it started clicking so I picked it up and tightened down on the drag... and my main line broke. 65 pound braid. But it had been on the rod for a couple of years so it was probably compromised. I don't get a chance to ocean fish often so that fish lives in my mind as the one that got away.

Also on that trip I somehow tail hooked a big stingray in the surf. Since he was able to face away from me during the fight, he pulled really hard. Scared a family out of the water because they didn't know what I had hooked (I didn't either). Luckily he broke off at the beach because I probably would've caught a barb trying to unhook his tail.
@DieterMelhorn Жыл бұрын
The tail on a blacktip or spinner will slice through 65# braided line with no problem….
@joshthompson112 Жыл бұрын
@@DieterMelhorn that might be what happened. Is a longer leader the answer?
@DieterMelhorn Жыл бұрын
Yes @@joshthompson112 but you really need a wind-on leader in the 8'+ range....when they get wrapped up, even aa small shark, they can eat up some line..,.
