Wait? Did he just move the spirit level four times? He did. He stood and moved the spirit level around him in four stages. So two times it was orientated N-S and two times E-W. At no point apparently did it occur to him that once it was oriented N-S he could peer across it to 'measure the flatness' of the Eastern horizon then walk round to the other side of the thing to 'measure the flatness' of the Western horizon without having to reset his equipment? If there was any proof needed that flat earthers think the whole universe is centred on them and they don't have the ability to move, even a couple of steps, outside their fixed viewpoint this is it.

Also, presumably, the way he's trying to measure the Earth's curvature is by placing the spirit level in front of the horizon and seeing if the latter (from left to right) starts under the former, then goes above it, then below it again; however, his camera is, oh, so conveniently, shaking all over the place!

It's actually NOT that dumb, as this is how the temperature of the Sun's surface is measured indeed. It is 5500 K or ºC which is also the color temperature of daylight and what a specialized IR thermometer (eg., a spectrometer) would measure (an off-the shelf thermometer would fail though, because they only work below 1000ºC and for less radiation). If you heat an object on Earth so hot that it glows daylight-white then it has the same temperature as the surface of the Sun.

I’d argue a far better experiment would be to set up the spirit level on railway tracks and stay there until the train makes him as as flat at earth. The ancient Greek mathematician Eratosthenes is credited with calculating the circumference of the Earth around 240 BCE. Eratosthenes didn’t need a spirit level or a vehicle that councils would tow from the side of the road because it looks like it’s abandoned. Having flown on passenger and general aviation planes over the last 40 plus years at altitude the curvature of the earth clear to see. Pre pandemic I flew at maximum altitude when I was on an Airbus A380 at 43,000 feet and the curve was unmistakable.

I believe the Flat Earthers say light fades out the farther it goes. So if the mountains were 30 miles away, you'd see them. If they were 50 miles, they'd be hazy. If 60 miles away, there'd barely be a faint, hazy image and if 70 miles away, they disappear altogether. Of course that could all be compensated for with a telescope.

@@Durzo1259 I live in front of the Alps. At good weather, they appear right in front of me, I feel i can grab them. At many days, they aren't visible at all, whatever good telescope you use. I even wrote a blog article about how far telephoto lenses make sense. Moreover, At higher altitude you can see farer away because the atmosphere at higher altitudes has a lower density of light scattering particles. As a matter of fact, a flat earth would - for the most part - appear exactly the same to us. The effects of the Earth being a globe are subtle. Esp. if you take atmospheric refraction into account which make light rays bend a little. I believe the most obvious proof is that the moon in the south appears "upside down".

I wanted to make one thing clear, because I see this every time: You CANNOT see a curvature on a big ball from the ground (or a bit above) whatsoever! It would be different on a cylinder, which is bent in only one dimension, so you can make out the difference when you compare to the straight other dimension. The sphere of a ball is a 2-D manifold, that is equally curved in every direction. If you are located on the surface, every point of the horizon (which distance depends on your height of viewing) has the exact same angle from your plumb point to the surface and is almost exactly 90° (maybe 89,999°) - all around you! To see the curvature this angle should be way smaller than 90°, so it needs more height. (I’m no native speaker, so sorry, if my explanations aren’t very good)

His out of focus star made me laugh nearly as much as his taking of the suns’ temperature by pointing a digital thermometer at it. You did not give me enough time to stop laughing at his demonstration. Thanks Dan.

Land surveyors: "What are you doing?" Flerfer: "Do you want me to find the curve or not?" Surveyor: "And if I say yes you're going to provide that for me with that?" *Points to level.* Flerfer: "Yes, see the bubble?" Surveyor: "I'm familiar with the bubble, Flerfer. I also dabble in precision, and if you think you can even approach it with your sad naked caveman eyeball and a bubble of fucking air; you're the reason this species is a failure and it makes me angry." -To Paraphrase that Rick and Morty clip.

Look at all them clouds on the horizon. Further away they are the lower they get. Almost like they are curving around something.

It's not common, but "apposed" is a word meaning "placed next to". Pretty much the opposite of "opposed". :)

So if it isn't obvious, it seems likely that that was an attempt to say horizontally opposed, which is a description of the design of the Subaru boxer engine which has an unconventional piston layout. But of course that's not how you spell it. I'm wondering if there's something else going on and if he thinks he's making a clever pun. Yes it seems clear that he's very fond of that car and given his mentality would make sense for him to latch on to the unique engine layout, but I wonder if he thinks it's making some sort of pun because to him horizontal means flat like the Flat Earth. No it doesn't actually make sense, if he was opposed to the horizontal that would mean he was favoring the vertical or something and that just is meaningless. But I have a bad feeling he thinks it's a clever play on words.

Nope nor can they understand on a globe Earth people live in the southern and northern hemisphere without falling off 🙄 They cannot understand gravity pulls everything to the centre, there is no up and down in space, everything is moving in space and space is bigger than we can comprehend. After all flerfs also tend to believe; Earth is 5000 years old, dinosaurs are either fake or lived alongside humans, aircraft spread chemtrails and we live on a pizza. Dumb is a good way to describe them.
