I’d argue a far better experiment would be to set up the spirit level on railway tracks and stay there until the train makes him as as flat at earth. The ancient Greek mathematician Eratosthenes is credited with calculating the circumference of the Earth around 240 BCE. Eratosthenes didn’t need a spirit level or a vehicle that councils would tow from the side of the road because it looks like it’s abandoned. Having flown on passenger and general aviation planes over the last 40 plus years at altitude the curvature of the earth clear to see. Pre pandemic I flew at maximum altitude when I was on an Airbus A380 at 43,000 feet and the curve was unmistakable.

I wanted to make one thing clear, because I see this every time: You CANNOT see a curvature on a big ball from the ground (or a bit above) whatsoever! It would be different on a cylinder, which is bent in only one dimension, so you can make out the difference when you compare to the straight other dimension. The sphere of a ball is a 2-D manifold, that is equally curved in every direction. If you are located on the surface, every point of the horizon (which distance depends on your height of viewing) has the exact same angle from your plumb point to the surface and is almost exactly 90° (maybe 89,999°) - all around you! To see the curvature this angle should be way smaller than 90°, so it needs more height. (I’m no native speaker, so sorry, if my explanations aren’t very good)
