Alex Shapiro . I agree with you! I think that many human beings are not exactly civilized in the current coronavirus environment. To many customers have been hoarding/stockpiling food, and paper towels, and toilet paper, and sanitation products, and are constantly revisiting the supermarkets only to do more stockpiling because they are fearful of the coronavirus!

When I watch this, I remember our neighbor, who would use the food bank while taking care of her 5-6 young children. Her husband would work at least 5 times a week and drive to the job site in one of their two brand new cars. Unfortunately the children were no longer able to get free pizza on school pizza days after a concerned citizen requested an investigation into this impoverished families situation. Today this poor family has moved into their new 2 million dollar home, leaving our neighborhood with at least a few questions that I don’t think CBC will be answering.
@-moumou-5 жыл бұрын
Do you really believe it is CBCs job to investigate when someone takes advantage of the system? Or, do you think most people are not aware that there are people abusing the system? Sounds like this was remedied and the poor continued to receive what they needed. So, what exactly is your point?
@-moumou-5 жыл бұрын
Additionally, why does this video remind you of that event. I mean, if you saw a video of that school would you only remember one family not getting pizza? Sounds like you have developed a BIAS.

I know a woman who goes to the foodbank to feed her four kids but for her and her husband they get takeout every day. She's like 350 pounds while the kids are literally starving. Food banks distribute food to 25-30% of people in need. The vast majority of food bank generosity is wasted on people who use food banks as a way to save money to buy drugs and or alcohol. I had to quit my church because they insisted everyone showing up for donations was deserving.

I've had to use a couple of food banks in Winnipeg a few times, one of them packs upwards of 50-60 people in a 15x20 foot room for up to an hour before allowing them to sit down in the receiving room and the other makes everyone stand outside for sometimes 2-3 hours even on the coldest winter days with nowhere to sit but the curb. Now I'm a volunteer at the Winnipeg Harvest warehouse and I see a lot of high quality, expensive items that I've hardly ever seen at the food banks, it's mostly cheap stuff you can get at Dollarama. Turns out the volunteers at the food banks get to pick out all the things they want before anyone comes in, which is always the best items. Snack items like chips, chocolate etc. and baked goods like donuts, cakes and pies are rarely ever given out at food banks but we get shitloads of it at the warehouse. We need something like this in Winnipeg, hell, everywhere.

I heard that Toronto has a massive homeless population too. I was told this was due to the climate, in that you can actually live in Toronto all year round, unlike some other parts of Canada. I've never actually done the research to see if that statement is true, but it sounds legit to me. If anyone would care to comment if it's true or not, that would be intresting.

But you are right. I should join a shelter, or a soup kitchen.. Id be more interested in volenteering with safewalk programs because of the crystal meth epidemic.
@-moumou-5 жыл бұрын
Eric Bachmann agreed with you on that. I would love to see people in need come to a farm, get fresh food, take a look around the pantry and then come out and work it when they are able. I'm not a fan of grocery market behaviors, products or consumerist ideologies. However, from the perspective that the whole society goes to them this goes a long way to not making people feel othered for their poverty. That being said, and I think this is where we might agree, if this is the model then are we not all poor? My point was around how people might feel about these aesthetics in the context of the dominant frame.
