Use this to make a voxel based armor model for a War Thunder like game. Done right it could properly simulate spall and shrapnel better than conventional methods. And what about using this tech to make a FPS game? No more Health Point system, instead an anatomy based system that simulates blood loss and organ trauma. So much cool stuff that you could use this tech for.

@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 3 жыл бұрын
@@dinkledankle Game development is an activity that requires appreciable skill, and managing modern sensibilities and high visual requirements is tough, so the hypothetical 'everyone' has a very long path from zero skill to delivering a game ahead of them. The engines you use today are developed by large teams and have high inherent complexity. The more you're given in assets and tools, the higher the expectations are, so it never gets easier. In contrast, all the tech of the 90s was never THAT advanced, it was developed by a single person or a small group of people, the amount of prior existing knowledge they were building upon was orders of magnitude smaller, and 13 year old demosceners and aspiring game devs would teach themselves math and assembler optimisation and accomplish to clone the coveted technologies, and they would teach each other and exchange information via BBS and parties and diskmags. And they too were 'everyone' and just taught themselves what they needed to, and they too started from zero. Today, if you want to implement a new technical solution, you're up against 60 person core tech teams where an average member has 20 years worth of prior experience and skill. The more things change, the more they stay the same. An accomplishment is never easy, or it wouldn't be an accomplishment.

DUDE! This is so cool... I've been telling my friends for almost a decade that voxels were gonna come back. The problem has been that voxels carry a lot of data, so they're intensive to render. This has meant typically that either you needed to use big chunks which makes an ugly game and kinda removes the point of doing voxels, or you make a game that is unplayably slow and makes your hardware bleed. With all the recent innovations like AMD's 7nm process, we're looking at major boosts in processing power in the near future and a lot of people have been asking "What do we do with that power? We're relying on GPU more and more for lighting and texture effects." and this is the answer. VOXELS ARE BACK BABY!

There's no problem with that. Probably the easiest part of a physics engine ever. Just constantly accelerate every body that's not supported on a surface by 9.81m every second. The hard part is air resistance, friction generally, internal forces in the bodies and colissions. Gravity is simple and fast.

We actually share in the desire to see the Red Faction series rise from the ashes of Armageddon like a phoenix. Also that voxel plugin looks cool, but sheesh Bluedrake, chill out with your titles. You make it sound as if this is cutting edge, world changing tech. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome tool, but y'know, calm your butt. I'm super happy to see voxel technology become more developed and available to developers though. What would really blow me away is soft body, hard body, fluid, and gas physics are all put together using voxel technology in a beautiful, optimized manner that is then used in a tech demo that gives off major Red Faction: Guerrilla vibes. That'd blow me straight out of the water and beyond the stratosphere. Teardown is almost there but the voxels are just so huge and it doesn't quite do any of those types of physics fully, fluid physics in particular.

So I’m super clueless when it comes to game dev but I really want to get started. Is this easy to use right out the gate or should I learn how to use unreal first? Also if you use this plugin does it make everything in your game voxel based or can you pick and choose what’s destructible?

Basically, voxel engines generally don't run that well on consoles. Jaguar's single core performance is not good enough and multi threading is complicated. Just look at how 7 Days to Die ran on consoles, or Just Cause 3. This generation's games were all really static because they chose low powered CPUs, expecting the 8 cores would offset the performance.
@Krudanze
@Krudanze 3 жыл бұрын
@@victfv jc3 used voxel engine for destruction? I thought it was just a very well executed precalculated destruction. Im not really an expert on voxel engines. I though its limited to objects being broken into cubes. How about red faction guerilla? Is that also voxel?
@victfv
@victfv 3 жыл бұрын
@@Krudanze No, I just used JC3 as an example of a game where the world being kind of dynamic already causes problems. Red Faction: Guerrilla uses normal static meshes with their GeoMod 2.0 engine to simulate structural stress, while the older Red Faction games did boolean subtractions from geometry, so no voxels. Just Cause 3 uses static/skeletal meshes with a simple health system.

The voxel plugin is really cool but only thing missing that I'm hoping to see eventually with these sorts of voxel creations/destructions, is being able to tie in some physics with like structural components beams, frames etc that can work together with the voxels to better simulate something being under stress and collapsing in the right circumstances

Yeah that's where the potential is really cool, developers like Keen Software House, the dudes behind Empyrion they pretty much had to hack together voxel destruction engines, or jury rig something into Unity. And you can definitely see where is falls (mostly performance)

Yeah, it's very similar to how Unity made it really easy for people to make games, sure there will be some trash made with it but we are going to see a lot more people using this voxel stuff because they don't have to make it from scratch, it's going to be really cool to see what comes of it.

This is a huge development that people don't understand how big voxel games are. When you see the shader and asset paks you can add to minecraft to make it look realistic AF, and you can do THIS destruction?!!? I dabble in unreal, and I'm about to go grab this now!!! Thx homie!
