Don't know what to say, I've had these exact systems (control box, ballast resistor etc) running for years with no issues.. BTW, that is a simple form of HEI ignition, Chrysler had it before the others and it's very reliable. I'd personally put your money toward other things the Fury needs.. Nice work though. I'd take ten of these "ignition" issues over any other work you've done on it!

If you're worried about the car just giving out without warning, GM-based HEI modules have always been known for doing this, too. Back in the day, it was always a good idea to keep a spare HEI module in the glovebox or toolbox. I'm not necessarily pro or con HEI. It does create a hot spark and is a little bit less maintenence. But at the same time, I tend to keep cars mostly stock, as, at least on GM, the stock pre-HEI stuff was pretty bulletproof... I can't speak to '60s/'70s era MoPar tech, however.

That blue Box is what I'm talking about and then you replace that with the HI module 4 pins GM and you'll never have an issue again with it you put that same setup in there they were problematic when they came out and they're still programmed today they're just about like Ford's Derek's barbecue mission they work half half half when they work and when they don't they don't it's the same basic idea as what ford had with the Durst bark and a lot of them have been bypassed in the same way I'm telling you with a $10 HEI model from the GM17 I'm distributor you noticed it's got 4 pins and all you have to do is run that wire for the distributor To the top pin of the HI muzzle there's a lot of videos to show you how to wire it up the Goody one so she had a wired up on the

Tip 2: Remember to always disconnect the negative side first. Doing this will significantly decrease the odds of experiencing a short through the frame of your car or other conductive metals. This is because if you accidentally contact the frame of the car with your wrench when disconnecting the negative nothing will happen. Once disconnected the positive will not pose a short risk to the frame either.

@@barryscott1309 disconnecting the ground first is applicable everywhere whether in the UK, Brazil, or the USA or Canada. Those who do not disconnect the ground first are taking a chance of shorting out the battery which can have catastrophic results. I wasnt paying attention and accidently started to unhook the hot lead from a battery before the ground and melted the hot terminal off the battery. Another time years earlier when I was a kid, my older brother accidently knocked a wrench off the top of the fender on a car and it hit both the positive battery terminal and the negative terminal on the battery which would be the same as hitting an inner fenderwell or anything else that is grounded on the car. The battery sparked for an instant then blew up -- blowing the top off the battery which his hand was resting on and smashed his hand into the underside of the hood cutting and bruising it as well as bresking a few bones in the main part of his hand and spraying acid all over everything includjng him... spraying his shirt and pants, both of his hands, his face, and getting some in his eyes. He did suffer damage to his vision but luckily was not totally blinded in the incident.

The real benefit of hei especially in your case is not the distributor and cap with the coil in it . Its the 4 pin module which was excellent from the beginning it will allow you to run a hotter coil with 12volts directly to it 1.5 ohm. or lower . Plus ditching the ballist resistor a big plus and that hotter spark u can open the plug gap a little. I'm not against hot rodding engine swaps into different makes but putting the hei distributor and having interference problems especially after you rebuilt the mopar distributor nicely will make you look like you throw money at things you don't quite understand. The wiring is so simple and all over the internet to fire that hei module with your mopar distributor that Fury will start and run much better then ever just give it a try!!! like i did on my Javelin and many ford guys and jeep guys can attest to.

When that stupid module goes bad It either won't start when cranking or won't run when you release the key. You start it up with no problem, drive where ever, turn it off and you are stuck there... or it starts fine and when the module heats up the car dies while driving, let it cool down and it runs again until it heats up. (That is if you are lucky) The modules are backfilled with epoxy when it ages it shrinks, cracks, and takes out the circuits. Check the one you carry as a spare because they break with age used or new...

Hei isn’t perfect. The coil can overheat and short. In the process, it can wipe out the ignition module. It’s great for the integration of the coil and providing more voltage to the cap and out to the wires. Using high resistance wires will wear out the coil pretty fast however. Seen lots of guys replacing many components in a hei and buying garbage wires and back within a year or so. Hei is convenient, space saving and easy to install. But it’s not infallible. Everybody says carry a spare ignition module! It’s why I thought you had a failure. The oil leak kills the transistor from overheating. Great video!

"New" is most certainly not "known good," especially in 2023 where most of these aftermarket parts are made in China to the lowest possible standards. As a general rule, you should substitute known good parts to "prove" a troubleshooting conclusion.

Mopar distributers are much easier with the slot at the bottom rather than a gear that can easily slip time. Keep a spare ballast resister in the glove box.

A short jumper wire works too, in a pinch, I've done it.

Really enjoying this series. My parents had a '69 Fury wagon (Custom Suburban) and I still miss it. I only remember two ballast resistor failures, one on the wagon and one from all three later Mopars. And one single ECU failure back then on a slant-6 Dart Swinger, which did occur on the street (embarrassing). Back then even name brand parts store replacements from Standard Ignition were North American made and we had no issues with them; the chinese ones available now have a noticeable 'infant mortality' rate by many accounts. Honestly we had more issues with the two Chevy HEI and one Ford electronic ignition cars but at least they died in the driveway, not while out driving like the Dart did.

One thing to learn from this...NEVER parts cannon anything. Always find the root cause before buying parts. Money doesn't grow on trees and we're all about saving money. Hell I thought the struts were bad in my daily dad wagon Honda Odyssey, but I double checked and it was the lower ball joints. So I'm glad I didn't spend money on struts when it didn't need them.

I had a 73 Dodge former California Highwway Patrol. 440 engine that only ran for ten minutes then died. Would not restart for 30 minutes. Dealer fixed it and it broke in their driveway. Called CHP and they sent new distributor. Bearing wore out at base. Problem solved.

OMG, 40 bucks for a vacuum advance is completely ridiculous and should not cost more than 15 dollars if that.
