It turns out, Sefton Hill got inspired to write a story about the heroes losing after watching Avengers infinity war, so he wanted to make the game end with all the heroes dead and then be brought back as post launch content where they end up winning, like what happened with endgame. The thing was that, everyone else in the studio was telling him how it was a terrible idea and that all the fans were going to be angry but he didn't listen. The only reason why there were clues about the clones was because everyone begged Sefton Hill to at least let them put those clues in the game so people could figure out that they were clones. There's so much wrong that Sefton did during development, even admitting to his team that he's never actually played any live service looter shooters, it makes it even more scummy that he left the studio before the game came out to start his own studio. What’s crazy is that this concept of fighting the evil bad guy again and again has been handled so much better in a little game called soda dungeons 2. It’s very simplistic but varies for every dimension you go through. Each dark lord will have a different personality and one even sticks with you through several dimensions before staying behind in his last dimension, because he has to tend to a castle that the previous lord left. Each boss is a different enemy, a different set of attacks, and their health increases for how many levels you climb.
