Ff Tactics is so closely modeled after Tactics Ogre that it still has that old trpg charm.

There are 2 general types of games that play with contextual abilities like this: - Ogre Battle, with fixed unit types that you can *somewhat* customize by altering formations and gear. Unicorn Overlord is the evolution on that. - Mobile Gacha games, which use a structure of simplified character builds that need to do complex interactions while still working on a phone UI. Sword of Convallaria is the closest I can think of to this game. In either case, I don't think it particularly deals with the original issue of battles taking too long in tactical games. You've moved time that would be spent in battle to the equipment screen, but I don't think the total time decreased a lot. That is an issue more fundamental to tankiness. Enemies have to somewhat comparable to player units in tankiness and killspeed for tactics to matter in the first place, and altering that with create a lot of asymmetrical design. You're probably not going to do what Last Remnant did with vague instructions that let your units decide what exactly to use, but one concept I haven't seen yet is only being able to control a leader. You have 2-3 leader units to control, each with 3-5 troops. You can control a leader and decide on formations, but the troops will use their own AI to try to fill the formation and attack the enemy. If your leader moves too far forward, the troops won't be able to stay in formation. If you charge into the enemy poorly, you can't stop your troops from getting surrounded and beaten to a pulp. But a leader who is good at directing troops might be bad in a straight fight.

I also really like games that do this. Even though there aren’t many, it adds a lot of variety to the gameplay.

ok.. as a FF Tactics, expert.. and i played Disgaea a lot back in the days There are 2 GOOD route you can go .. 1 : The serious one like FFT, in which you DO need to be tactic, how you move and split your unit is important in early game (and sure when you unlock op class all games get easy) what do i mean by that? Giving spell casting time, ability to be interrupted, but at the same time, does higher damage than normal attack or skill , are Aoe, and impossible to dodge (unless items with elemental immunity or absorption) adding different classes to increase diversity(because of frikking woke i cringe every time i use the word diversity now..), so that the gameplay will have more longevity. add secret classes , add farming for skill upgrade, item/equip upgrade, terrain stats like slower on snow, faster on grass and so on. There would be much more to say but well.. i guess since you're doing this kind of game you already know most of it. 2 :Disgaea style is also good, not much tactics needed, brute force and power leveling is also fun if done right. But let's not mix the two or its gonna be a mess. Improve the sprite quality, please try not to make another tactic game that look like its been made 30 years ago. You could also add special burst skills that only "some" special characters have , with animations etc.. if done right like every 10 turn or something like that, the animation wont be a bother ^^ And even if it is, the option to toggle it on and off should be still available. Give the MC a class that only he/she has.. FFT did the mistake to give ramza a Squire class which only has some unique buff but doesn't feel special at all. i don't know if you're even gonna read this but, im always available if you want ideas ^^ Also good luck with the game , hope the best for it. I will also do character concept and design for you for free, if you like my art style of course. If you're interested just tell me here (i just need you to add my name as "char designer" later on, i think that's pretty reasonable to ask :D

@IcaroGameDevInter yeah. It mixes up game play with a unique qte crit bar system. It makes the gameplay feel more involved since you directly control if you crit or not.
