One thing that stood out to me about 7th Saga, besides its ridiculous difficulty, was that it had weird double-wide tiles compared to like every other 16 bit RPG ever. Gives the maps an uncanny, claustrophobic feel.

Pro tip for 7th Saga -Always buy gems because they trade at cost value and monster will loot you for gold if killed. -when in battle defend first then attack , for some reason your attacks will hit more often and harder when you do this. -also the first boss Romus the ghost let him beat you the first time to have your character learn the secret about a whistle in his former owners grave which will one shot him. -when you get a rune use it during battle and also be careful not to fight one of the other characters looking for them because if they beat you and most likely they will ( they will always be 5 levels higher than your chosen character but not your partner) they will steal the rune and you have to track them down.

That's just two reasons, another one is the devs working on home console games were often pulled from arcade dev teams, so their entire design philosophy was "make it as hard as possible to get more coins into the machine", which actually tied in well with the idea of extending playtime as the abysmally tiny storage and processing power of the home consoles meant they couldn't make huge, sprawling games so they had to make it as difficult as possible to finish. There's a reason why removing the difficulty barriers like giving infinite lives, infinite health, etc. shortens most platformer games to about 10-25 minutes and why so many older RPGs relied so heavily on grinding levels for hours - there just wasn't enough cart space to provide hours of content otherwise.

@Chef_Alpo
@Chef_Alpo 8 ай бұрын
Yeah, I was a bit puzzled to hear it's such a ridiculously hard game or impossible, calling it a grindfest is more appropriate, at least to anyone who has played a wide range of rpgs. You had to put a lot of work into your characters and the story progression is slow, if anything it's tedious with little pay off along the way, not everyone's cup of tea. I would call Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen hard, as the battle system is quite complex if you want to stay within good alignment. Traditional grinding will throw you out of good alignment, especially if you're fighting weaker enemies. As much as I've played the game years ago, I never mastered the balance.

I can still remember the day a video game genuinely frightened me. It was those large worm-like things in ZAMN and the noise they made seriously had me scared for my life as a kid. I even remember getting so terrified that I had to hit the reset button on my SNES just to make it stop. Even their designs just terrified me! Later on I did try to face my fear and try again but once the stage loaded and I saw those things moving underground, all that bravery vanished and I hit the reset button. Eventually I gave it away and hoped whoever played it didn't get scared like I did.

That is fair, the Snakeoids can be pretty terrifying with how they pop up and how difficult it can be learning how to fight them. I used to just use monster potions as a kid to deal with them, but eventually found that if you get the angle right, you can shoot your bazooka at them and hit multiple times to kill them faster, or throw plates. The fact you can't even beat level 20 without killing all of them can definitely make it more stressful.

As a child/teenager I had Zombies Ate My Neughbors and its was challenging to play this game. You often either miss one or two "neighbors" or get randomly hurt by opening cupboards/trashcans but at least you have a chance to get random good weapons and items from them. Two player coop adds extra difficulty due to fact that there is no splitscreen which forced proper cooperation between players and you have to share items. Passwords were useless (you start from any passwords with only water gun and ONE health kit) so I often played from the first level trying to binge it from start to the end. I don't perceive Ghoul Patrol as the sequel to ZAMN. Controls are jank (shooting and running set on ONE button), gameplay is worse by my taste. Graphics are too big and often you don't see what lies ahead of you. Music and sound effects is just plain bland. There is no sequel to ZAMN. Period. Had played Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy as a child on my famiclone. Always had hard time to remember where to go or where I left that damn item. Rolling Thunder 3 was one of the last games I played on my Sega. Soundtrack is jamming and many names of the tracks have word BAD in it.
@Dargonhuman
@Dargonhuman Жыл бұрын
ZAMN has to be played from the start, for sure, because you absolutely _need_ that cache of weapons and items for the brutal later levels. The only password that's worth putting in is BCDF - it starts you on a secret bonus level "Day of the Tentacle" where you can pick up several high powered weapons like a bazooka, weedwhacker and a couple extra health kits before going to Level 1. If you keep one of the bazooka rounds, there's a hidden bonus level icon behind a blastable shrub at the very top of Level 1 that takes you back to "Day of the Tentacle" so you can grab even more of those sweet weapons to start Level 2 with. I don't ever start a new run of ZAMN without that code.

!00% feel the same about Ghoul Patrol...It just feels clunky, boring , and just soulless compared to ZAMN. A lot of the suspicions that I had about the game not really being a "true" sequel were revealed to be well-founded after I later found out that it wasn't actually meant to be a sequel to ZAMN originally...While it did use the same engine ("Big Sky Troopers" also used this engine, which is an ok game with a unique premise but IMO really nothing too special) it was actually originally going to be completely different game and was made by a different studio than original (LucasArts), and only turned into one at the last second because of growing popularity of first game. So it makes sense that it never really felt like a "true" sequel. ZAMN was one of those rare games that you could feel the love and passion that went into making it, with the cool details and little easter eggs. I mean, it was a LucasArts game after all and they were known for putting their all into there games. As big a horror fan as a kid, it was just awesome trying to spot and figure all the references. Plus, despite being almost impossibly tough, it always felt fun and left you wanting to keep going. It was one my go-to multiplayer games (for Genesis) when I had friend over, right next to Toe-jam and Earl. Even my friends who weren't gamers could get into the game have fun with it.

Since XIII hasn't been ported to PS4 or PS5, and the PC version has performance issues, there are issues recording it on PS3 because of HDCP. I read that an HDMI splitter can get around that, but there's also an issue of time, with Jared committed to streaming four days a week and a lot of new games, some of which he won't have time for. The review will come, but not for a while. It'll be something, though. 7th Saga's harsh difficulty wasn't intentional, by the way. A code error in the localization borked the player's stat growth for each level gained past certain thresholds, resulting in enemies that out-scaled you at essentially all phases of the game; the kicker there was that over-leveling yourself in the early game was a very bad idea, since the partner characters would gain spells that made them borderline impossible to beat for most players. It's the cruel, nasty beginner traps like that which earned 7th Saga its infamy, but luckily there are patched roms that fix the English version's bad code, and the result is a neat little RPG with some interesting concepts and progression. The game world has this lonely, almost desolate feel propped up by an understated score and enemy designs that were quite gritty and grotesque-looking for fantasy RPGS of the time. It's great.

From what I heard, the reason 7th Saga was so hard was because Enix of America wanted to combat the rental market. They figured that if they made the game harder, people would rather buy it than rent it. All it did was take a rather bog standard JRPG from Japan and transform it into the RPG equivalent of Kryptonite. If you got a Game Genie or a ProAction Replay, you could tweak the game to the Japanese difficulty level, which was way easier.

7th Saga and ZAMN are two of my biggest guilty pleasures on the SNES. I used to borrow 7th Saga from my father's then-girlfriend for long periods of time in trying to complete it, and I rented ZAMN from Blockbuster every once in a while when I couldn't find anything else to play. I considered 7th Saga to be such a unique RPG at the time since it allowed the choice of playable character from a wide selection (and of course, I went with Lejes the demon, who is considered one of the harder characters to play as). I still favor Lejes and Esuna to this day. As for 7th Saga's difficulty: I remember hearing/reading that it was an accidental coding error or something when porting it over. The devs did want to increase the difficulty for the NA port, but they made a slight error in the coding which exponentially strengthened the other player characters instead of just giving them a slight bump. Didn't matter to me back then, though, since it was Red Pison who softlocked me on my first playthrough.

One thing about the 7th Saga that I haven't seen as a mechanic since, is that the turn after you defend... your next attack (if it's physical) is stronger (Feels like 80%-95% plus stronger). But everything else you say of the game is true... and I still love it.

I always liked the defend system, because it added a neat little layer of strategy to battles. Needing to decide when it was best to defend then attack, as opposed to just attacking, for example. Not to mention that RPGs with useful defend commands were pretty much nonexistent back then, so the idea of having defending be so integral made for a fun novelty.

I've said this before, but Zombies ate my neighbors, is perfect remake material! It's fun, it's nostalgic and has enough rough edges that a modern take could ironout

I absolutely love 7th Saga. We used to rent that a ton back in the day. I finally beat it last year, and I can say, the regular enemies are absolutely brutal, but the bosses aren't so bad.

Wow, ZAMN is a blast from the past. I remember that being of the few video games that everyone in my family, even my mom, loved to play. That big baby level was my 1st wall as a kid. I still remember the cheers we had when we finally beat that level!

To explain a bit more why 7th Saga is harder in the localization, the player's characters basically have halved stat growths, but nothing else was scaled down. You are pretty much always weaker than you are supposed to be, and the further in the game you are, the worse it gets. Further, this did NOT affect the other playable characters, until they joined your party. They all scaled to your level and would join way stronger than you, but the big issue was if you had to fight them. If you level too much, it could be nearly impossible to win, and depending on the order you find the Runes in, you may be *required* to fight one late in the game.

DIZZY! I grew up playing the NES game with my dad! ;-; I’m glad to see you featuring 7th Saga as well. That game was so hard and the whole losing your runes mechanic was frustrating, but I have fond memories of it. I wish Square Enix would tap that back catalog of games they published and release more stuff like Soul Blazer or 7th Saga. And Zombies Ate My Neighbors is just nostalgic.

My favorite fact about 7th Saga is the fact that there is not one, but two different places where you can just straight up brick your game and have to start over. One is if a certain one of the seven is made your rival and you level up too much then he gets a healing skill which makes it impossible to beat him and the second happens soon after where you reach a point of no return and if you haven't levelled up enough you can't beat the enemies and you just lose so in between that fight and the transition, you need to gain like 15-20 levels real quick... in a game with a time limit...

I remember when I was in the fifth grade I went into the bathroom during recess and I heard someone talking about this game where you had a crystal ball in the corner. I was surprised and interrupted them; "I know that game! You're talking about Seventh Saga!" Honestly it was a fun game to play back in the day; it was grind heavy but so was every RPG, and nobody knew about the broken levelling system until it was just too late.

I was introduced to play Zombies Ate My Neighbors about 3 years after it released. I remember it being frustratingly difficult. As for 7th Saga, picking from one of 7 characters as your main in an RPG reminds me of Ultima: Quest of the Avatar, where you pick your class, and then that class is the one you cannot recruit for your party. The game looks interesting.
