The 2023 Tata Steel Challengers is taking place from 14-29 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. The 14-player single round-robin offers the winner an automatic place in the 2024 Tata Steel Masters.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single "sudden death" games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. Official website: www.tatasteelchess.com

When I was in primary school, I was in a chess team with Thomas. We went on to become champions of Apeldoorn and also played for the national title. Thomas was board 1 (ofcourse) and won all his games. Sadly, me and the other teammates couldn't win as much so no national title for us. We knew Thomas was gonna make it far and to see him being analysed by Agadmator warms my heart. Congrats Thomas! Can't wait for you to become GM!

Heartbreaking how she was ahead the entire game but couldn’t find the crucial king move. Very proud of her for playing that thrilling line. We don’t get to see these lines where both queens are out gobbling up pieces in a wide open game very often in top level chess. Great game to cover Agad! That was fun.

I was following the game in the sports hall, Eline was in time trouble and she had to find very precise unique moves, the position vas very tricky. After resigning she felt completely destroyed, because she knew she had a won position, her face was a poem. Tough defeats that hurt too much when you are a 16 yo player. I hope she recovers from that loss, still lots of games to be played in this Tata Steel Chess Championship.

Reminds me of the saying by Johan Cruyff (talking about classic Italian football): ''Ze kunnen niet van je winnen, maar je kan er wel van verliezen.' - ''You can't lose against them, but they sure can beat you'' Eline found wonderful moves, but the downside of attacking chess became visible. The incredible complications sometimes take too much time to calculate and every inaccuracy can turn the whole game around.

Great game, I could see some winning moves for her if she sacrificed her rook for the pawn in front of his King, rather than taking the knight. Would of been a very interesting line. Because his King would take the rook. She would then check with her other Rook on the back rank. I can’t see if she then moved the Queen how he could stop checkmate the next move.

Converting a winning position, especially under pressure of a world watching over your shoulder, is a skill that often shows the difference between a talent and a maturing master. Thomas clearly is a bit further on the road to maturity, but needs to re-think his opening choices if he wants to move into GM elite territory. This game should not have lasted more than 25 moves with 0-1 as a result, but was big fun to watch from beginning to end.

Wow, fantastic game. In the alternate line at 9:35, I'm not seeing why ...Bd6, Rg1 is resignable for Black, when she can interpose with her B at f8 - so Rg1, Rd8; Rg8+, Bf8 (or Rxd6, Rxe1+). Which is not to say the line she chose with Bxf6 isn't superior. Also worth noting, at 8:00 Black is threatening not merely "all sorts of discovered checks", but quite specifically the excruciating Rc1 double check and mate!!😅

In 3:15 you say that black has 2 pieces for the rook - in fact white has a rook for the bishop. Yes, black is up 2 pawns, but pawn structure is not great.
