The MG3 is one of the most successful machine guns in the world today and remains in production and widespread service more than 61 years after it was first adopted. It is an early Cold War era machine gun of German origin and a designation for various machine guns developed when Germany entered NATO. It is well known for its high rate of fire. The MG3 or (Machinengewehr Modell 3) was introduced into service in 1968 under the Rheinmetall brand label and continues in widespread use today. These are basically is a conversion of the MG42 machine gun which was widely used by Na - zi Germany during World War 2. Besides the Belgian MAG, the MG3 was the most common type of Western machine gun during the Cold War. The weapon was developed as a multi-role General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), this classification denoting a specialized group of a machine gun in military service.

but still they didn't solve problem with overheating, you take for example PKP Pecheneg it can fire up to 600 rounds in long bursts, without losing characteristics, also it weight 3 kilo less than MG3, so it only means that they couldn't develop something better than MG3, and that's it. mg 3 is pretty good, but it is obsolete, you don't need such high rate of fire

What they did change, was using a heavier bolt in the MG3, so as to reduce the rate of fire to about 850rpm, instead of the MG42s 1200rpm (which was an insane speed, meaning the squad had to lug more ammo, and that the barrel would overheat very quickly). A sensible fix.

The MG3 is notorious for jamming, and in any combat scenario you would be hating the high rate of fire saturating your ammo and over heating your barrel with no added benefit. The Nazis kept the MG42's high rate of fire as a morale weapon, akin to the Stuka sirens. It's by design it was kept in the MG3 and used by militaries saving a buck not wanting to upgrade to superior machine guns. Germany literally does not want them anymore lol they are being replaced.

I was surprised when i was first time in the Weapons storge room (WAKA) they had some K98k besides the G3, i think they used the Carbines for quartals that went to Bonn (former german capital) for ceremonial dutys in the "Wachkompanie" or it was a leftover from times when our Barracks were occupied by BGS (Borderguard), when Bundeswehr was founded 55 nearly the whole BGS Nord was intigrated into the Bundeswehr incl their Weapons.

The best part of the MG3, is its simplisity, and its ability to destroy whatever you deside to shoot at. Barrel change is FAST, for a trained soilder. Safety is simple, and is either safe, or HOLY DIVER! :-) Recoil is managable, and you never fire moor than 3-5 rounds pr trigger pull.

there is a little piece, we called it NATO-Bremse that keeps the gun from shooting that fast. its supposed to prevent the gun from running off aswell, means shooting without pulling the trigger. the mechanism is a open-bolt system which in itself has a slight delay, just like the uzi and it can be very scary if you let go of the trigger a splitsecond too late. having said that: single-shots were almost impossible, what you had to do was slipping of the trigger while pulling it (which i would not recommend)

I don't think it can be easily overstated just how influential the mg34/42/3 series of guns were. It was the first practical general purpose machine gun. There's going to be a lot of spit hairs over this but the fact that machine gun design and doctrine changed world wide after world war two to either duplicate or emulate the mg42s role speaks for itself. While its a heavy gun one man can still effectively use it unlike a us 1919 .30 cal or most of the other belt feds of the time.

The MG34 was notably one of the first top to bottom GPMG that was used in such a manner, however the MG42 is mostly over rated and hyped due to it's rate of fire. Reliability, accuracy, and long term durability were notably outdone by other machine guns. And the rate of fire overall reduced the weapon's ability to supply effective suppressive fire. It had an 1100 RPM, whereas most modern machine guns try to stay near 500 RPM for obvious reasons. Also "one man can effectively use it" my ass. It's one of the heavier GPMG, has a very substantial recoil favoring a tripod setup, and requires high amounts of ammo served by at least one or more crewman.

Thing about the MG3 in German service is that while its heavier than the newer guns that are suposed to replace it, the troops prefer the MG3 over its reliability and surpressing power. The MG4 is usualy joked at by the troops, 556 MG lacking stoping power while the MG5 seems like a step back in raw performance.

I don't know where you got that from, literally anyone in my unit prefers the MG5. And they're about the same weight, MG5 is just much better to carry around due to better weight distribution and sling system. MG4 is for a different purpose. Slight correction, the MG-3 doesn't have a flash hider. the contraption at the end of the barrel is a muzzle booster. As counter-intuitive as it sounds, this part makes the recoil stronger to ensure reliable operation of the MG-3's blowback operated mechanism and in fact makes the muzzle flash rather worse instead of hiding it. Source: German Army Ranger training. But overall it's an amazing gun if you don't have to carry it by foot for several km. It's very challenging to shoot due to the extreme recoil (I've seen recruits get pushed half a meter back in prone by this gun) and it's effect is best described as a long-range shotgun rather than a machine gun. We even had some models in the armoury that still had "MG 42" written on the receiver, ith the 42 just stamped over with to X and a 3 put behind them.

Served in Estonian Defence Forces as a machinegunner with MG-3. It is a MG with amazing firepower. As i was too triggerhappy for Gailil AR, MG-3 was perfect for me. Really loved that weapon, and i can say from experience, as long as you pour enough oil on bolt it works like a charm. I usually carried a 0.5l coca-cola bottle full of oil with me, because the original oil bottle was simply too small for me. Belts are 50 rounds, but they are linkable with one extra round. I carried 750 rounds with and partner carried another 500.

@@tsugumorihoney2288 this gun is operated by two man teams so the weight gain is not such big issue. The assistant has his/her own primary weapon, but also carries spare ammo and a spare barrel. And you can swap the hot barrel in anything between 3-6 seconds, depending on how practiced you are. Basically. You could get a newer, lighter MG.. But it sure as hell wont be as reliable. Or accurate. Depends what you prioritize. 3-4 more seconds of fire or a gun that can accurately hit the target at almost any feasible engagement distance, regardless if you are positioned in mud, sand or knee deep snow. I saw you talking about sustained high rate of fire on PKP for 600 rounds. It's very impressive on an already very good gun, but the advantage of the MG3 is that if you have more spare barrels available you can keep on firing for thousands of shots if you swap the barrels after each 120-200 shot belt. The Impact of using multiple spare barrels in defensive positions is best illustrated by the effectiveness of the few that stood at the Tannenberg line battles in WW2. I have talked with people who tried to fight back the Soviets and was told that they usually had 4 to 6 spare barrels lined up in defensive positions which enabled them to be fired pretty much continuosly. The casualty ratio relflects as much too.

Believe me, you have missed nothing spectacular with the P1. It was the standard pistol in my time in the German Army (mid to late 90s). One of the many jokes about this thing was that every soldier using it had 8 warning shots and a well aimed throw. It was more likely to hit your target throwing the damned thing itself than by shooting at it. The G3 was a decent, quite powerful rifle and the MG3 was... well, an experience to say the least 🙂

The helper was responsible for feeding the belts and changing the barrel, which was done after two belts fired through ( 2X 120 rounds). However, that was on constant firing and we got easy on this old lady :). The shooter did well...the obvious..cutting people into halves (you could do that on short distances). Changing the barrel was a matter of seconds and you were good to go. It's an effective and reliable weapon. German engineering at its best :) The original Rheinmetal MG 42 Einheitsmaschinengewehr (Universal machine gun) fired the 7.92×57mm Mauser round. Even if the recoil packs a punch, its quite manageable, since you dont go through a 120 shots belts in a single burst. You fire short, controlled burst, that are really quite accurate. Our company boss, a captain, really liked to test stuff out. We did all sort of things with the MG3. Mud, snow, dirt, nothing stopped this thing from doing its job.

Pull back the charging handle, push forward on the latch to open the cover and swing out the barrel (which then slides back slightly), grab the barrel and pull it out, push in the cold barrel, close the cover and get ready to shoot again. All actions (minus the pulling back of the charging handle) can be done with your right hand (the dominant one for most) while the MG rests on the bipod and shoulder rest.

@@OrIoN1989 Show me one MG where you can change the barrel faster and easier while still in cover not having to rely on a loader or such. Learning how to operate the weapon you use BEFORE you use it is the key here. The M240 is nice-ish in that respect but you have to do it from above and surely wont do it yourself. M294 is a pain in the butt in this respect. So with all due respect - I don't get what your problem with changing the barrel on a MG3 is/was.

@@ceemosp As I said its just that its a balancing act when swapping barrels with the forks for the barrels. And the cases for the replacement barrels. I would made a better design, but its a old design. When driving in a tank its a pain when everything is tubling around. "Learning how to operate the weapon you use BEFORE you use it is the key here." This make you sound you sound like we are doing this for the first time. lol

@@OrIoN1989 Naaw - that wasn't my intention at all. It's just that the process gets so much faster and easier once you have been "convinced" to do 100 dry runs by your instructor LOL. Also I agree that there is a huge difference between the pure bipod infantry usage and that as a coaxial or "AA" mount on a tank (done both). My comment referred to the former usage. I'd say the biggest downside of the MG3 is the lack of a carrying handle and yes, I was blessed with having to carry it during our training marches :s

@@grojunge2449 MG3 numbers are only over 1 million. If you add MG34 and 42, that brings it to 2million + vs 3 million + M2. It's not the number of countries that matters, but the size of the military too. M2 was ordered in bulk by the biggest militaries in the world, save the USSR.

@@TheNinjaDC no, the number of variants and prototypes throughout the history of the mg3 makes the production closer to 2 million the mg 34 at a half a million and mg 42 at 600,000 roughly, this would make the total 3 million + , and what the hell does save the ussr mean

Many MG3s were sold as a part of the Leopard 2 weaponsystem, like for example Sweden who uses MG3A1 as "KSP 94" on the STRV122 tanks (only usage, otherwise mostly FN MAG as KSP58).

It’s a matter of pride regardless of how performance and cost efficient a weapons system is. Frankly I find modern leaders and generals to be extremely stupid in regards of not taking up what’s better no matter who produced the items.

The MG3 is an MG42 re-chambered for 7,62 NATO! The first ones were rebuilds and left over parts from MG42´s after WW2. So realistic the weapon is now 79 years old.... nice round one coming up soon!!! 😆

Had to shoot that beauty back in 1988 in my time in the german army. I could not hit a barn door with it. Then an old sarge with a pipe in his mouth came up to me, kneeled down beside me and said "don't hold it like this, boy, hold it like that." I just changed the hold of my left hand against the butt a bit and suddenly I started sniping with it, hitting a hand sized target at 300 yards with all four bullets of a burst. A simple trick but a classic example of "how to". That gun is far from foolproof but if you know how to use it...
