Why don't you gesso the back of the paper next time. Markers won't bleed through and you still have a paper base to start with.

If I'm allowed to offer a word of advice as a 'hobby artist': just copy the page with a lightbox onto sturdier paper. It would still be challenging to color it in and make it pretty, but you wouldn't have to fight so hard and spare yourself a lot of frustration. I don't think that anyone of us klicks on your videos just to see you struggle. You are an amazing artist and deserve to enjoy yourself when making art.

I saw some other suggesting gessoing the back, and I was going to suggest that as well; but ALSO use the clear textured gesso on the front AFTER you apply the alcohol markers, but BEFORE you start with the pencils. That way you can get the blending without the bleed-through, and you get the texture for the pencils to grip onto. Just a thought.

Awesome result Sarah! It's beautiful, not disappointing at all. I tape any kind of paper down when covering with gesso or latex, most of the warping disappears when dry, you could do a test of course, and, fine grit sand paper or even one of those foam fingernail files with four different emery surfaces will give your gesso, or the slickest paper an even texture and tooth...Thank you for sharing your adventures!!👍🤟🪡🎨

I have got to give credit where credit is due girl, that was an amazing comeback with the face. I feel exactly the same way you do about the Disney books, the adult books have terrible art and the children's books have terrible paper. The Kinkadebooks have beautiful art, but the paper isn't good. I mean it's better than some of the other paper out there and the art is head-and-shoulders above the other adult books, but then again I'm faced with Thomas Kinkade's paintings at every turn. Again, kudos on that face recovery. You have to tell me how you managed to scrape off the layers of pencil with other pencils. And if that's a Wildergorn poster I can't wait to see what you do with it. I have a couple of Fabiana Attanasio's posters from her fairy tale books but they have full blinds in them so I have to iron them before I start. I'm not sure what medium to go at them with because they're huge, I'm debating between markers and pencil or acrylic paint. Or maybe watercolor. Who knows

I love the fact that when I goof with pencils, I can erase most of the color to lighten it up. I am so happiest that you made it through this process.
@BelindaShort Жыл бұрын
I use matte spray finish to help the paper or clear gesso on the front. You can also use yes paste to put it on something thicker. Yes paste doesn't tend to warp the paper as much. Also if you really want it nice you could ask a frame shop to dry mount it for you. Alcohol marker can also break down the gesso because it eats the medium sometimes.

what a big clip-hanger to the next project :) seeing your video makes me think of how painting and working with colors should be, for everybody, artists and hobbyists alike, it means - making the color sketch before, then using alcohol markers with colors pencil, combining them, using each for their advantages. your hard work really shows, only just by your very good skill of using the art materials and then to the whole painting you made. I really enjoy your videos and very glad to find your channel :)

You turned such a cheap piece of paper into a work of art! I know the exact kind of paper you're talking about too, feels even thinner and more fragile than regular printer paper. Just accidentally bought some 🙄If you ever want to try another one of these posters, you could try gluing it to cardstock or even some non-corrugated cardboard as a backing. It would offer the support you'd need to do thicker gesso, which would help give you that texture you're looking for. ADC did it for one of his coloring pages, and it turned out very well! Still, you definitely turned lemons into lemonade with this one, and made something beautiful out of what could have been an absolute nightmare!! Great work!!

I have this coloring book and wanted to do this same thing. I know the paper is super thin. I think pasting this onto some bristol or poster board would give it some durability. You did amazing job and i love the gesso hack. I'm definitely gonna try this. I think watercolor pencils would work as they would blend and then you can blend them out with the markers or even a colorless blender
@Pixie_Barrow2024 Жыл бұрын
That's one of my favorite things lately. When I get something on really bad paper, or even if I print it myself, and I want to use watercolors, because watercolor paper does not fit in my printer, I mounted on watercolor paper with spray adhesive. I stacked books on top of it overnight to let it set. Then I cover it with a coat of clear gesso, allowing it to dry in between and then again stack books on top of it to let it set so that there's no warping. Then I paint away. It's a really awesome hack. You can also take it a step further by mounting the watercolor paper onto a canvas, using the spray adhesive, and then you can use acrylics as well to make it a truly multimedia piece.

Something I learned while testing a lot about Gesso and grounds is....paint it on both sides of the paper. I mean watercolour artists do that with water and stretch the paper to prevent buckling. You can do that with mediums as well and the lumps and bumps go away. Even without the stretching part.

I think you can get the colored pencil mistakes off of the gessoed surface with OMS or turpentine. It'll turn into molten goo on top of a moisture proof surface so you can wipe it off with a paper towel. I think you can also get marker ink off using a bit of alcohol on a paper towel from that surface. Also, using the markers before the gesso might have been a better idea. It doesn't matter if it bleeds through. As long as you're gentle and let the paper dry now and then, it should hold up.

We love the suggestion to use a clear acrylic product to improve that poor quality paper. We don't think it necessarily has to be gesso; acrylic medium could work well without imparting so much texture. We think acrylic gloss gel medium could be used to mount the page to a stiff board or panel to minimize warping, then a light coat of medium or acrylic sizing on top should reduce absorbency. We think an added bonus to coating the page as we see in this video is that it isolated the paper, maintaining a reflective white ground that showed off the luminous color of the markers.

If clear gesso doesn't work. You could try to spray a workable fixativ. This works for watersoble mediums and coulered Pecils, but I haven't try it for alcohol makers. And it may not work with a waterbased fixativ. The picture looks good in the end but I didn't sure that it worst the time and frustration. I have a Thomas Kinkade Disney book. Not realy the paper quality that I like. But it isn't so big I can copy the pages on my own paper.

Fun fact about Flynn, when Disney was designing him they apparently interviewed a bunch of the ladies on the animation team to ask what they find attractive in a guy (in terms of physical appearance) and combined the most popular answers to create him.
