This Glashütte Original is Crazy and... Surprisingly Cheap | Watchfinder & Co.

You know what they say about form following function, that designing a tool should be considered first with operation and usability, and secondly with aesthetics-well, seems like the folks at the Saxony watchmaker Glashütte Original didn’t get that particular memo, because here we have the Glashütte Original PanoInverse-and it appears to have been built backwards.

Why bother hiding any of it? - We all knew that's where thing's got real like none else! This is probably the best Open-Heart design to exist as most other watches with such a concept don't even show a significant fraction of the escapement wheel. Most of the open heart watches seem like they are cut from a normal dial model, but this one gives a sense of originality, which is truly priceless!

This seems like more of a German answer to the Breguet Tradition watch. Breguet choosing to emulate the traditional pocket watch movements, and Glashütte Original choosing to emulate the traditional German three-quarter plate style.

I normally find watches of this style too messy and cluttered, but I love this one! The simple darker colours on the dial work better for me compared to a white dial, and the time is still very readable. And I love a power reserve indicator. If I win the lotto I think I’ll buy myself one 😀

saw this at an ad and man... was it different than shown in video. it wore ever so slightly smaller than 42mm on my 6.75" wrist. and it looked less "pretentious" than it would suggest with its skeletonized dial, it has a blend of both sportiness and dressiness. The design of the dial is unique and original to GO and it looked amazing in person, it reminded me of Iron Man 2008 movie's MK2 armour because of its metal color scheme. I am swaying between this piece and the 40mm panoreserve, it is a beautiful piece, but it does somewhat remind me of alange1 and it can't be helped (disclosure: i love both alange and GO, comparing them isn't my point). The inverse is just that much more unique, on the other hand, the reserve is more elegant and less shouty.

Bought this watch a year ago after seeing this video that got me hooked on the Panoinverse. It is the perfect watch for me. I have a larger 19cm wrist but this watch fits really well even though it is 'only' a 42mm as the dial saturates the entire case compared to a diver or chrono where the outer bezel takes up a lot of the real-estate. Telling time is EXTREMELY difficult on this watch due to the lack of contrast and the reflective nature of the Glashutte stripes. But let's be honest who buys a mechanical watch to tell time these days?

Hmmm. As always, an amazing video, beautiful detail & analysis, very informative. I’m a bit of a watch video lurker… I look at a lot, but I rarely comment. I’m of the Talking Heads “Psyco Killer” school of thought… “say something once, why say it again?” I Love watch & clock making, as did my father & his father. Most of the time…(sorry about that), it’s the design of the face or over-ornamentation that puts me off a particular time piece; however, this time is the finish. What are those pits on the regulation works & the escapement? There are visible manufacturing & finishing defects on the watch you are showcasing… or is some of that just dirt in the mechanism? Either way, I would reject this watch from the get go. Did anyone else notice, or is it just me? Love your work all.❤

I think you nailed it at the end. Just read a wsj article that many unexpected people wear watches that aren’t set properly or aren’t wound because watches to them have moved past accuracy to simply art. You want to check the time you check your phone. Your watch is just an extension of your personality.

Macros exposed some poor finishing on this watch. And the ruthenium plating doesn't seem like it's holding up well. Also, is this a used watch? Serviced? Screw slots look rough. Design is cool, but details are quite lacking for the cost.

Sorta misreading history in the favour of the winners there... Lange was re-established by the Swiss using imported expertise. All that was carried forward was the brand name and a Lange family member put on the board. They are effectively a new brand under the old one's name (albeit one that makes watches recognised as some of the best in the world). Glashutte Original actually started out as re-branding of GUB - the state owned amalgam of Glashutte watchmakers during the communist era.

I don't find it hard to read at all, and the "reversed escapement" is beautiful. It's what we watch lovers can stare at seemingly forever without getting bored. And with this piece, you're granted that view from the front without that "faux tourbillon" feel of an exposed balance wheel. However, the see-through-but-nothing-to-see-here case back is quite disappointing. It almost feels like they're playing a practical joke...
