Its absolutely worth it! I have 2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD. 240,000 miles when i had to replace the 6.0 liter engine. It cost almost as much as i paid for the truck in 2014, but I didn't concern myself with that. I compared it with the cost of replacing the truck. With a brand new equivalent to the model i have, it was approaching $100,000. The total cost of an engine replacement was $10,000. Do the math! Does my 05 have rust on it? Yes. Does it have dings and dents? Yes. But that doesn't bother me. I use my truck. It is a work horse. It is my daily driver, and it pulls our 28ft RV effortlessly. I can live the imperfections of some rust and cosmetic issues because the truck is mechanically solid. And I'm not paying a $1200 a month truck note.
@JohnSmith-pl2bk4 күн бұрын
Why did the original engine require replacement? What wore out? Are you maintaining the new engine differently i.e. oil change periods etc. ?
@captainkirk45144 күн бұрын
@JohnSmith-pl2bk Long story short, I replaced the fuel injectors to solve a problem with random multiple misfires. I narrowed it down to 3 faulty fuel injectors, so I replaced all of them. But I didn't splurge for the OEM replacements because they were $1200, so I went with aftermarket. That was a mistake! I had a faulty fuel injector on cylinder 4. It was leaking pure fuel into the cylinder. It hydrolocked and then detonated. Blew the cylinder out. There was nothing else left to do. I weighed it out and came to the conclusion very quickly that replacing the engine was the best option. The truck has always been well maintained, but because I cheaped out on the fuel injectors, I cost myself a lot more money. Lesson learned. Hopefully, others will learn from my mistake.

I owned a 2001 Chevrolet Express van and it died totally dead on the road. I could hear the fuel pump whirring with the key-on cycle. Turns out the fuel pressure regulator went bad. Instead of full pressure mode, it failed and there was zero pressure, so you couldn't even limp it home. I spent two days under the dash of this van in the height of the California summer heat taking the intake manifold off just to get to the damn regulator. Very upsetting... but wait. Just a few days later, the flex plastic hose in the fuel pump assembly cracked and was leaking badly. The tank was full, so I cut an escape hatch into the floor so I could gain access to the pump. It was under one of the bench seats, so I covered it with some sheet and I was smart enough to not cut out the carpet. I left it as a flap, so it fit nice. My 2005 Buick LeSabre had a super-easy-to-service fuel rail and what do you know? The regulator replacement was literally a 5-minute job.

Love my 02 Tahoe, I'll never sell it, they'll bury me in it. Started having this problem at about 130K miles. It would long crank when hot after sitting an hour, any other time it would fire right up. At 145K the fuel pump failed so I did the whole assembly. That actually didn't fix the problem for me, it still didn't like hot starting after sitting an hour. So I tried a de-flood procedure (hold the gas pedal down fully while cranking) and it would fire up much quicker. Turns out I had leaky injectors, same symptoms as here but it was flooding the engine in addition to bleeding the rail pressure. Injectors are cheap so I installed 8 new ones along with knock sensors/harness and that did it.

Yep. The 2004 Sierra 2500 4x4 ext. cab short box was the sweetest looking truck out there, but unfortunately everybody knows that, so you can't touch one for under $13,000 even with high miles.

Truck prices are insane. I’m going on my 9th year owning my 2011 Tundra. Only has 172k miles on it. It is now mostly a tow pig for my camper and project cars. We have been thinking lately about replacing it as we could use a little more back seat room with a crew max and the tin worm has eaten some big holes in the bottom of the bed. But the truck still runs great. Paint and body is great. Just don’t look underneath. New truck prices are insane. I can afford one but don’t want to. Can’t hardly find a $30k used tundra that is under 100k miles and at least 6-7 years old. So we will be holding onto this one for a bit longer.

I have a 2000 silverado 4.8 that has these same symptoms. I have to prime it 3 to 4 times in order for it to start properly. In some cases, it starts with a really low idle and normalizes idle once warm.

Ohhh, he is so right about the prices of new trucks, much less the cost of ignoring maintenance of your trusty old trucks! It's nice to see a mechanic explain the point at which a vehicle should or shouldn't have money spent on it... The latest disgusting road test I've seen is the new Jeep Grand Wagoneer... They should have called it the 90 GRAND Wagoneer!!

We have 01 we bought new and plan to do whatever to keep running. Been garage kept without any scratches even. No new vehicles today are trustworthy at all. If you keep up with all the recalls which seem like every week, so it’s not just new truck prices that keeps us keeping on our truck with 85,000 (approximately) miles.

@@siamesepleaseme7468 Preaching to the choir, I own a 2012 Toyota Tundra Crewmax, which I love, and it's my "nice" truck. She's my "going to town" ride. It just turned 100k miles now and I plant to keep it for a long time. I've had 6 Toyotas over the years and they last so I know it'll be around for a while. My worker is a 1988 Ford F250 extended cab, long bed, diesel. Three years ago, I re-did the diesel engine in the Ford. The paint is faded, but the frame, but the other stuff are rock solid. Considering the price of the latest version of that truck, it made total sense to do the work on its engine.

I'm a little surprised that you didn't pull the bed off rather than lowering the tank. I've dealt with it both ways on a fuel-injected Nissan D21 Hardbody, and I found it easier to pull the bed. My '95 Impala SS has a similar fuel pressure issue, and as you describe I just hit the key to 'on' but not to engage the starter three times, engaging the starter after the third pump. It hasn't been worth the cost to get at the check valve.

Because half the bed bolts will strip out from rust. I can have a tank down and back in alot easier than fooling with bed bolts.

Hey David, you mentioned the seal leak. I have mentioned to the customer sometimes changing the fluid and cleaning up the area around the seal can freshen the seal and Clean the debris causing it... Been 75% successful rate in Vermont and might be something to try. The other 25% found gouged shafts or loose bearings causing leak. Everything from Chevrolet to Toyota to Mercedes.

We have an 01 Silverado with 80,000+ miles that’s never had anything like alternator or other simple things and my husband services everything he can. We bought new and also still run an 89 Chev Scottsdale with 350 with 189,000 miles we bought new 5-23-89 with manual transmission and it’s rough and is our mulch and dump run truck. We’ve taken care of both and had people stop us to talk about the 01 being in great shape. Garage kept with no scratches at all but has tiny chips from road debris knicks. I don’t want to think about purchasing another truck the way things are made today. Recalls about every week on new vehicles and with turbo junk. I would have gotten a Toyota Tundra but not after motor change with the wild problems. EPA needs to be reigned in!!! All their requirements are really pinching manufacturers today to make insane engines and including hybrids. Ever priced battery replacement for hybrid???? EVs aren’t practical at all.

I've always had my transmission flushed and serviced at 45K mile intervals plus some time ago I've decided to just spend my money maintaining my car which cost me $7500 in 2024 in maintenance replacement repairs which most of it was deferred maintenance items and most of it was in labor costs which when I was younger I'd do it all myself. I just can't see myself spending $35K on a new vehicle. One of my dream rides is a two door jeep wrangler but it seems like they are chasing the market these days.

I owned a 01 GMC Sierra 1500 Z71 that I purchased new. I liked the truck until I hooked it to a trailer. I was suposed to have the towing package but the steepest gears you could get were 3.73. That 5.3 was in second gear screaming with 6000 pounds behind it every time it came to a little grade. It wouldn't even stay in overdrive towing my ramp gate trailer empty! I traded it for a 2007 Ram 1500 with a 5.7 Hemi and 3.92 gears. I still own that truck. It has towed my antique tractors from Michigan to Georgia without any problem.
@ArtLysense-m2m3 күн бұрын

"Is it worth fixing?" I'm a believer in the "the devil you know is better than the one you don't." Some people call it the "sunken cost fallacy" but I'd rather put $2k into my $4k truck because I know what's been done to it, what's good, and what's going to need attention in the future. The rear pinion seal is starting to weep and it needs a throwout bearing (going to do a whole clutch), I don't care that it's going to cost me half the value of the truck because it's better than a truck payment.
