A lot of people had the same idea about the concept of the song as you did of his mother passing away, it's actually the other way around with Quad having died and now as a ghost he is watching his mother trying to move on - hence the album title "I Didn't Mean to Haunt You"
@mouses_HK
@mouses_HK Жыл бұрын
I think it still hits insanely hard if his mother was actually the one who passed away in the song, but it's so insane how deep this song is now that I know that it's Quad dying and his mother moving on, while he hasn't. I originally thought him banging on the door was him banging it out of frustration for not being able to be with his mother, but now seeing that it's him trying to get back to tell his mom that he's still there, and he's trying to go back. That's so crushing I also think everything that Knox said can just be turned the other way, at least most of it!
@elitetui

Also hence the “I think your goddamn lying” lines. He knows his mother isn’t okay but she keeps saying she is. She isn’t moving on.
@virtuallylive
@virtuallylive Жыл бұрын
@@elitetui while i think this theory holds the most leverage. it doesn’t explain the whole “i wasn’t born yesterday” part. but it does explain lines like “it feels like without me” “you said i’m in a better place” “you said it happened for a reason” and “all the littles things, i should’ve set out loud, every little thing, i did to make you proud”. i definitely think it’s about him not coming to terms with his own death, and seeing his loved ones moving on. i mean he’s literally dressed like a ghost in every teaser. and towards the end of this music video when’s banging to try to come back in.
@gabrielaguilar9345
@gabrielaguilar9345 Жыл бұрын
@@virtuallylive To me, the line "I wasn't born yesterday" is just Quad clarifying in the afterlife that he may be dead, but he isn't naive that someone is struggling while grieving him and hiding it on the surface, paired well with "I think you're goddamn lying."
@braxtona.wetherell9881
@braxtona.wetherell9881 Жыл бұрын
@@virtuallylive "i wasn't born yesterday" is him recognizing that things aren't alright, and also perhaps being in denial about his own passing - death is a sort of second birth, and he refuses to move on because he isn't yet ready to go. He can't be born again because he isn't ready to leave his life behind.

I rewatched this song a couple of times and got emotional at the same spot everytime. I think Quad was hoping for that effect there cuz its literally the same spot you got emotional at. What a powerful song and message. Quad has evolved to such an outstanding artist. He's got his own lane at this point

Same here. I've cried to this song every time I've listened to it, without even knowing what it was about. Sonically and melodically it still just spoke to me, and this song already has a special place in my heart. It's getting me through hard times and it's incredibly creative. Quadeca is amazing.

I'm so happy to see your reaction to this masterpiece. Quad has that rare ability to transport us into his own world. the first time I listened to this song I got chills and couldn't stop the video because I was so immersed into not just the song but also the visuals. It is crazy to see how far Quad has come. From Voice Memos to FMTY and soon to IDMTHY, he has continued to raise my expectations.

@recluseyami
@recluseyami Жыл бұрын
On Twitter quad confirmed that IDMTHY is a story being told through the perspective of a ghost, so this song most likely is him watching his mom grief after his death and she stopped putting out candles for his birthday which is why he talks about the candles being gone and the born yesterday line is something that his mom said to grief with his death by saying that he wasn't born at all he wasn't born yesterday on his birthday and then he follows up by saying I think your god damn lying cause he doesn't want her to forget him, that's what I got from this song
@ignaciomelendez9777
@ignaciomelendez9777 Жыл бұрын
Thats pretty good! I get the “i wasn’t born yesterday, i think you’re god damn lying” line as he knows that his mom and grieving and she tells her self that she’s fine, but quad knows that shes lying hence that line

In this song, Quadeca died and is watching his mom as a spirit, watching her cope with his death and seeing how she doesn’t light candles anymore for his birthday, tries to tell herself he wasn’t born yesterday and moves on but he knows she’s lying and is still crying/sad inside about his passing/suicide etc in which he regrets on not delaying a specific date (which caused his death) because if he did...he would still be with his loved ones and not in the afterlife alone...also the tapes are connected to the good memories with her and follows him around and finally wraps around him (like how memories stick with you forever in life and death) and now he’s stuck in the afterlife and wants to be with her while a voice in his head is saying “you want her, you need her, she no longer needs you” which causes him to panic and start slamming on the doors or walls trying to get out of the afterlife and have someone hear him but they can’t...he’s forever dead... In the “living realm” his family is probably getting a cold feeling that someone’s (Quad) watching them and is getting scared/haunted but in reality...it’s Quadeca who’s scared of being stuck in the afterlife with nobody being able to hear him knocking for help...hence the title of the album... “I didn’t mean to haunt you”......
