Awh, you’re taking all the fun out of it. Just kidding. You did a great job on the back of the headstock, but my OCD wants to spend more time on the front. If you use really fine sand paper 2000 to 2500, you can really buff that up. I think I’d experiment with rubbing some black die into it, too; the body seems to have a very slight yellowing color, too. Finally, I’d shine it up with car wax and a buffing wheel.

Nice work Shur. Glad you did this. I get fed up flagging so many counterfeit guitars on Facebook marketplace. It isn't illegal to own one but you cannot sell one. That's the law (in UK anyway) even if you legitimately say its a replica that doesn't matter selling it with the trademark infringements makes it illegal

At this point, I would say just make the front of the headstock gloss black. Take the neck to a paint or hardware store and they should be able to match the red on the back of the neck. Should have burned a big "NO" in nice font in front of the "Suhr" on the headstock and then burned "Fake" into the back of the headstock and body. Then you could have kept the original finish and look while making an interesting conversation piece, while protecting the brand and possible future purchasers. 🙂

Wow, the headstock came out pretty nice albeit lighter than the body. Next time for such a project, using this project as an example, try a little bit of gray and black (or whatever the contrasting colors may be) spray paint with at a bit of a distance (22-24 in) between the can and the headstock & speckle with light mist & short bursts. (having masked off where you do not want the spray), literally, like only one of two light passes, then steel wool (800-1600) over the finish, blending the colors. Once you get the right blend, use your sealer/oil/coat of choice. It is amazing how close you can get to the right colors. The quilt may not exactly match, but the right color depth & tones will blend it nicely overall.

Nice job Darrell. My suggestion is to rattle-can spray paint the face of the headstock gloss black. I think it would look a little better than the sanded down original colour, that no longer matches. It would take a couple of hours at most to prepare, mask and paint and would also be cheap to do. Keep up the great work!

I didn't really like seeing this done to what was, a beautiful looking guitar. And as you said that it played nicely too, it makes it even more of a shame. Yes, I know that is was a 'fake', but to be absolutely honest, I don't care. I currently own 31 guitars, including 5 Gibsons and 4 Fenders. All are genuine as I've owned them for many years (long before the 'Fakes started appearing). So, ok I'm lucky, but let's face it, if these 'big' manufacturers didn't charge such absolutely ridiculous prices, there would not be a market for 'fakes'. Cheers. 😊😎🎸

@DBG And did you know Darrell, that on Hipshot Open Gear tuners, tightening the screw that attaches the tuner knob will actually tighten how the gears mesh and you can completely eliminate gear creep, (It's True!) which is fantastic for any guitar with a trem system! Happy holidays, Darrell. All of my "cheap" guitars are counterfeits of established designs with their logos. But I wouldn't trade my 'collection' of 27 guitars for one $10,000 Gibson, Fender, or Martin. Asian artisans are superb & perfect for "the starving musician." My new Indio Helix @ $153 from Monoprice is the finest of my electrics. Prices will skyrocket, bro. So, we come in on "the ground floor" before inflation dominates the market, which I see beginning. And with war on the horizon, changes are coming, brother. Not knowing the future my 'shredmaster' nephew will inherit these instruments along with my audiophile recording studio. All the best, bro! I'll be blessed to live through Christmas.

Sorry Darrell but I think it was a mistake to sand the headstock. It would have taken exceptional woodworking skills to do this successfully and match the finish. I do respect the integrity of your effort, but I think simply stamping the backside of the headstock with “fake” would have prevented any future fraudulent representation and preserved the original aesthetics of the instrument.

Darrell, I once had a fake lefty Gibson Les Paul but there were a couple of weird things about it. Instead of being Gibson on the headstock it had Orville. But, if you got it in the right light you could see Gibson underneath Orville. I know of the true Orvilles that Gibson put out in the past but this wasn’t one of them. I suspect it was discovered or other fakes were being shut down and caused them to overspray the new logo. I got it from a pawn shop thinking it was real.
