As to your comment on Gibson pickups, I’ve a mid 1980s Custom Ordered Gibson Les Paul Custom that defies logic. I picked up an early set of Unpotted Gibson Burstbuckers (#1 & #2) that had changed hands a few times due to their lackluster sound/tone. Once installed into that 1986 LP Custom it immediately became clear something special had happened because those pickups now sound absolutely unreal (in a good way). My point being, sometimes it isn’t the guitar or the pickups but rather the combination of the two. When the stars align, that kind of thing. Anyway, congrats on the Navigator, a super quality guitar for sure.

THAT is why the Seymour Duncan Seth Lover set is one of my absolute favorite classic PAF pickup sets. I have a few sets in my inventory and one of my current builds, at least one, will be using that set. I played a couple of those over the years, and they are really nice guitars. The last one I played, a few years ago, had been pretty heavily modified by the previous owner and I did a little bit of work on it and I was pretty impressed with the quality and the attention to detail in the construction of that guitar. Now you kind of see what so many people have been trying to enlighten you to on the meh-ness of Gibson. They are historical, they were innovators two generations ago, they CAN make a legendary guitar, but ...

For everyone saying “I want to visit Japan to go instrument shopping”, go to Ochanomizu (that’s the name of the area/train station) in Tokyo if you ever can. Right outside the train station, is the #1 place to buy instruments in Tokyo, maybe all of Japan: an entire long street of basically nothing but instrument shops, mostly guitar and bass (across the bridge, if you go via the metro; right outside the street entrance for JR Line). It’s an amazing place to try stuff out. Shibuya has a few really good instrument stores too. For drums, go to Japan Percussion Center near Asakusa.

Maybe another option for someone looking for that true Gibson look at a much cheaper price, but still high quality. A Japanese Market Epiphone Les Paul. Slightly different from a MIJ Epiphone destined for the US, instead it's MIJ and meant to be sold in Japan. I managed to nab one used at Guitar Center years ago before I even knew anything about Gibson, Epiphone, where factories are and what kinds of quality you can expect from where something is made. I bought it because it looked badass, and sounded incredible. Learned much later that I managed to get a pretty rare guitar for the US for a stupid price of 500. It's got the Gibson headstock, is thick AF, and just looks and feels the part on every level. I will never let it go.

Wow seems like everyone loves your new toy. I used to build guitars in Nashville back in 93-94. I was good enough at it that almost all the guitars I made needed very little sanding. The carved tops were smoothed out but nothing else needed sanding. I didn't build them by myself of course but I made all the bodies, necks, and fingerboards myself. The guitars I made were within .002 thousands of an inch or 1 human hair width in tolerance of each other. I could take any neck and fit it with any body, even today, and it would fit like a glove. I'm proud to say I built over 100k guitars and they are hard to come by as well. I own 6 of them myself and have been offered stupid money for any of them but I have no desire to part with them. I made every solid body model they offered plus all the customs. You could say without my expertise they wouldn't have made squat that year. Acoustics yes but no solid bodies. No one knows who I am and it sounds hard to believe but it is all too true. Henry J hired me personally. I'm not saying your guitar is any less special than the ones I made but I also know I was the first to make them special like yours was made...

I've owned several japanese LPs. The Grecos from the late 70s and early 80s were the best I've found. The Lacquer can get thick, but I've thinned them down. For newer ones, i bought an Edwards ALS135 and they're by far the best. It's an all lacquer (ALS, all lacquer Standard) as opposed to the Lacquer Taste. The LT is kind of a dumb idea, it's still over a urethane so there's no advantage. I paid a little over $900 for it shipped. It's a 1 piece body, 1 piece neck with the added wings on the headstock (who cares). Long tenon (I've been building and repairing guitars for 15 years, yes there a difference). Duncan "Antiquities", CTS pots, paper in oil tone cap (which really surprised me), tone pro bridge with aluminum tail piece.

We're talking one piece body on the LS, full flamed maple on the ES and were around the 1000/1300 EU range. Still, considering value, for a high end model I'd go Gibson, simply because of value retention. Most of the high end japanese models cost as much or more as the "real" deal. On another note, I find the frets on this Navigator like something ESP would put on a metal super strat. They feel off to me, on a LP Custom.

Also, there is no such thing as too many guitars let alone too many Les Pauls because there is still quite a bit of handmade aspects of the Gibson guitar that make every single one different from the other. For example I bought a 2020 Standard 50’s neck in Tobacco Burst & the neck was great pretty thick the way I like it but it was nowhere near as thick & beefy as the 2021 Standard in Heritage Cherry.

So if i were interested in a cheaper LP custom would you recommend a brand new Epiphone, or an Edwards?
@agufish3 жыл бұрын
Edwards, especially the nitro ones. If you can find one local so you don’t have to pay international shipping/taxes, go for Edwards. Epiphone is great quality for the money in 2021, and the distribution network makes it more convenient to get in the first place, and puts you in a better position if there’s something wrong with the guitar :)

I have a MIJ Encore E49NT, made in 1976 a lawsuit Les Paul in natural finish. after doing some research I believe that the Encore E49NT is made by the same company that makes Graco guitars. it weighs just over eight pounds. it's in excellent condition and I got it for a great price. and because I have an addiction to natural finish guitars. are the reasons I could not resist buying it. since then I have come to really like it and it proves something that I've always heard. about Japanese guitars being pretty well made. the only thing is it makes me curious about how well made other Japanese guitars are? well answer, I also have a vintage early eighties Jackson Charvel Charvette. and it's also a really good guitar so far I'm good two for two on made in Japan guitars.

Hey Agu, do you still have the Les Paul Navigator ? And is still the BEST Les Paul you own ?
@agufish2 жыл бұрын
Yes, and yes. It’s an heirloom level guitar, and my only custom-shop level Les Paul.

@@agufish Happy to hear that. This color ( like Randy Rhodes' guitar) is the best color for a Les Paul. Crazy as it sounds I never liked the burst colors for a Les Paul 😅 . I myself have a white Edwards Les Paul and it is amazing. Best Les Paul I have ever played. P.S - Isn't your black modified Gibson Les Paul was originally a custom model ?

I had a 1981 tokai ls200 with gibson patent number pickups, that was and still is the best les paul I've played.

If you love the Les Paul, try to guitar in my avatar the Westbury custom. Made in Japan by Matsumoku in the early 80s , hand wound DiMarzio pickups. They can still be found on eBay for way under two grand

AIC!! Nice touch, my man. That thing looks stupidly dope, wtf? Making me wish I didn't just buy two Epis from the 2020 line, as beautiful as they are (Custom and just had to get the modern after your review)
