I enjoy collecting tab books. I have a stack of them in my room. Speaking of artists and tab books I do own a few from a company called Sheet Happens which collabs with the artists and works with them to make accurate tab books and the books themselves are the nicest tab books I own. They always throw in nice picks too every time I've ordered a book from them. The spiral bound also makes flipping through the pages way easier on the books

I have taken a play from Breaking Benjamin as far as tuning is concerned. Ben Burnley IV and the guys keep their GEETARS tuned to Drop Bb. You have to tune from Eb Std to Cb Std that's taking all 6 strings down 2 steps. And then the cherry on top is turn the 6th string down 1 more step. E becomes Drop D. D becomes Drop C, and C becomes Drop B. The final touch is to tune down ½step to flatten it. METALLICA used Eb Std. on every album.

Hey Mike, big fan of the channel. I love seeing the bad tab books you do and I wanted to share you one that I own of my favorite band of all time, Alice in Chains. Now, I am pretty sure I have all of them as I have the ones for Facelift, Dirt, Sap & Jar of Flies (which are booked together), Self Titled, and the Nothing Safe Greatist Hits album. Now, the one for Dirt has some huge wtf errors that are baffling, and I think you'd get a kick out of seeing them. For example, the ending of "Would?" You get this big D5 shape (Db since it's tuned a half step down) and then it goes into a 7#9 chord. It leaves that out and makes it just a D major chord. The same 7#9 is also used as the final part with the final lyrics "If I would, could you?" Part, but, it has it listed as these weird F chords that make no sense at all. Sickman also has a glaring error at the bridge part where it slows down and Jerry is playing these softer arpeggios. There is a part where there is supposed to be a F# major played (Again it'd be F since half step down) But, they accidentally made it and Fmajor#4 chord, having the Tritone in it, likely a misprint There is even spelling mistakes where on Down in a Hole, they label the Acoustic guitar as "Acaustic"

Bad tabs is what stopped me from actually learning the guitar back in the day. It's defeating to try and play some of these things they suggest. Now I'm learning guitar, drums and bass all at the same time. But now, I play by feel while playing along to some music. If there's something that interests me that I hear, I learn that specific thing, and expand on that within my own style of playing. To think that i used to be able to play the tenor saxophone while sight reading. One of these days, I'll learn the actual notes on the guitar. It would be nice to be able to hear something, and understand what key it is in without having to figure out which notes work each time. I haven't heard any Overkill since the 80's... I wonder how many people have tab PTSD with * anxiety from these books.

Don't blame the transcriber for slash notation. Cherry Lane was notorious for kicking transcriptions back to the transcriber and telling them to convert it to slash. Transcribers were paid by the printed page, and engravers charged by the printed page. So the editors always sent things back to be condensed.

The only thing I'd mention is. When you go through and try to decipher what the tabs or * try and say. You come up with possible inventive techniques or sounds. Be them accurate to the song or not. Kinda like what it was learning from records or tapes before tabs existed. You had to figure it by listening. It might song like it, but played nothing like it. And you get inspired to use the incorrect technique for your own. You get the point. I have about 50-60 of those books from when they started back then. Some are real good, and some failed miserably.
@DMSternАй бұрын
In Japan and Korea, the standard seems to be to publish "band scores" that have notes and tabs for all instruments. It could be a fun rabbit hole for you to get hold of a few and compare if their transcribers were any better. As a bass player I've imported a few, and can at least say that more than once they've completely mangled the lyrics of records I know came with lyrics inserts!
@TheArtofGuitarАй бұрын
From my experience the Japanese scores are usually pretty decent. I bought one for close to $100 once and it was really good.

There's a (huge) difference between what people are asking for something and what they end up selling for. For instance, one of these books sold for $51 back in September. Anyone who thinks they'll get $700 for this - or even $500 - clearly did a bit too much headbanging back in the day...
@aldersmoke1Ай бұрын
Holy hell, I have that book. I wouldn't in a million years have guessed that old tab books would have any value. Couple thoughts: there was only one guitarist in the band at this time, and I'm fairly sure he played Skullkrusher in C standard, not dropped C. (I can't say for Playing With Spiders, I never paid as much attention to that one because it's mainly a bass solo.) No one was really using dropped tunings like that back then. I also know from interviews back in the day that the guitarist was going for complete Sabbath worship on this one, and a lot of the fingerings and stuff are pure Iommi. And Iommi never used drop tuning. I'd be curious to see live footage from when the original guitarist was still in the band. Because I bet the new guitarists (and they've had about 10 of them since) moved it to dropped C for convenience and because that's what they were used to.
@TheArtofGuitarАй бұрын
Very possible for sure. I'll ask him and let you know what he says.

I did learn 4 Horsemen and Little Wing that way, and I can still play them today, so whatever.

Bad tab books taught me three things: 1) With enough persistency one may learn some of those strangely tabbed out parts and have increased capability as a player. 2) Don't trust everything you read in print 3) Musicians writing notation were (are?) not usually metalheads and/or did not understand the significance of tab for less schooled players.

Some of these books seem like they just put in no effort. I have the Black Sabbath Anthology book which has some weird interpretations of some of the lyrics. For Supernaut, there is a line that goes "I'm gonna climb up every mountain on the moon to find the dish that ran away with the spoon." an obvious reference to the nursery rhyme. The book claims that the lyrics are "I'm gonna climb up every mountain on the moon, to find a distant man a waving his spoon." XD
