So to possibly answer your question about why Zorro offered his life up to Mihawk; to put it simply, he challenged him to a duel to the death. And since he lost, he was following through on his word. Nothing more, nothing less. It wasn’t that he was giving up on life, he just knew he was bested after his weapons shattered, and accepted his fate on the terms he had already set. After all, if he had said “time out! I lost. So let’s stop here.” it wouldn’t have been the duel he agreed to. And as you will come to find the more you see his character, he is a man of his word. No matter what, he will always follow through on what he says. Make sense?

Thats absolutely correct. Both in the manga/anime/live action Zoro recognizes he has lost by an undeniable margin and lost 2 of his swords in the process. Zoros honor wouldnt allow him to run away from the fight, so he has to stand facing forward as he faces the cost of losing a duel. Its the reason his famous quote in the moment is "Scars on the back are a swordsmans biggest shame". These words by themselves also earn Mihawks respect.

Fun Fact: Eichiro Oda almost refused to reveal early on that Garp is Luffy's grandfather. Garp isn't even supposed to appear at all this early on. It's not just that they wanted the family connection. But they wanted a sense of urgency that carries over throughout the whole season, which is why the marines are always on their tail in this adaptation. Otherwise, the adventure would seem a little too leisurely and there would be nothing really tying it all together - more of a "villain of the week" type of plot.

The "You're like a frog croaking in the well" line was slightly different in the original source material. Mihawk's line actually goes "Frog in the well, know how big the world is". And he's basically saying that Zoro is like a frog who lives inside a well that thinks he's seen and known everything there is, but in reality he's oblivious to the fact that there's a whole world outside the well. Like how Zoro thinks he knows the the full extent of power, or swordsmanship, or that he thinks he's already on Mihawk's level but is oblivious to the fact that he still has a long way to go. Mihawk woke Zoro up to reality.

Also, episode 5-8 are the where this series takes off. Kuina wasn’t just his one friend, she was his goal. She beat him in like 2000 straight duels. After she dies the only thing in life he had to cling to was the promise he made with her. Zoro, Goku, Hisoka, are all characters I would call “Fight-sexual”. Fighting is their only real love. Lastly, I don’t think this is a spoiler, Oda has said there will NEVER be inter-crew romantic relationships, and he made it very clear to the creators of the live action they would never be allowed to break that rule.

In the beginning, we see the flashback of luffy and Garp, and Garp says something about 'your training begins today'

The characters get insanely powerful later on in the story. Mihawk is the equivalent of playing an RPG and having a fight against a major antagonist or NPC early on and getting crushed the first time to show just how powerful they get. Bounties in One Piece are more than just a monetary reward. They are also a measurement of how powerful a pirate is. Mihawk's bounty was in the billions before it was cancelled.

Mihawk is a glimpse into the top tier of the one piece universe, since this is a very long story i think you can guess yourself how luffy would do against him. Hence why they're weak. They get stronger by fighting and gaining experience. Then you get guys that'll see the potential in others and spare them just to see them try besting them at a later time. I kind of don't want to spoil anything for you when you go and watch the anime, so just very vaguely and briefly: there is indeed a lot more context regarding the Mihawk and Zoro fight in it and I also think the gap between Mihawk and not only Zoro but also Luffy becomes much more clear there and also why Mihawk doesn't actually go after Luffy is a bit different. Baratie is sort of the arc that is most different in the live action compared to the manga in how much of the plot they changed around, so I think it's one of the most interesting ones to experience in both (I still like the live action version and understand what and why they changed what they did for it and I think it does work kind of well for that, but I personally love a lot of the things from the original manga/anime that they changed and especially some of the character dynamics work a lot better for me in there, so this is probably the arc that I'm most curious about for people that saw the live action first to experience in the anime and their thoughts on it. Which also just adds to the reasons why I'd be really thrilled for you to check out the anime after :) ) Also an obligatory, get well soon. :-)

I fakking love the Hisoka reference... He is a VERY overlooked villain. Ive not watched all of One Piece, at about episode 300 I was drafted into the army and when I came back I was like 300 episodes behind so I never picked it up again and it was AGES ago so I dont really remember but Ithink Mihawk is kind of an anti-hero type. Very much outside the law but not necessarily evil.

From what I understand this takes the common anime approach to individuals having incredible abilities. You have the ones who get them from 'magic' (aka devil's fruits) and then those who achieve them through rigorous training and practice. They've kind of given us the nod that Devil's Fruit comes with a price (the whole sea water weakening thing) but haven't seen anything as a counter to the training path. Which is another trope. Hard work and practice pays more dividends in the end than blind luck. But I could be wrong. I stopped watching anime a long time ago and when I was growing up it was Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, and Bubble Gum Crisis. This show made the wife and I dive into the anime series as well and it's been fun so far, but we're only about 75% through the first season.

An easy way to understand how strong is Mihawk that when he becoming a shichibukai aka warlord of the sea, he work with the marine so they cancel his bounty caped at 600 millions ( but later when he left the shichibukai the bounty increase back) and Luffy only worth 30 millions bounty by the end of this ss1

12:55 In the manga, Mihawk chased Don Krieg out of the grand line and into the East Blue. So that battle we saw between them was likely close by. Garp wouldn’t have called him for help if he wasn’t close enough to respond quickly either.

I've seen a few people react in the same way to Luffy's connection with Zoro, and I'd say you're absolutely right. At this point in the show they had spent more time together to build a bond, that's definitely a big part of it. But the characters compared to the anime are also ever so slightly different, and that also plays a role in the perception of their relationships. In the anime, yes, Zoro is a more serious character than Luffy just like the live action version, but he could be described as more of a himbo than his real life counterpart. He's very much like Luffy in that they aren't particularly bright and solve their biggest problems with their fists. That creates a sort of camaraderie or bromance between them. On top of this, Zoro was the very first member of the crew, whereas in the live action version, he and Nami joined simultaneously. So in the anime, there is a period of time that it's just Luffy and Zoro. In the live action version, Zoro seems like more of a big brother to Luffy and generally has more banter with someone more grounded and mature like Nami. He isn't as snarky as her, but is much snarkier and wittier than the anime version. With that being said, the character is 95% the same and I think the slight changes they made create a really fun and interesting dynamic with the rest of the crew that wasn't present in the original.

4:19 Tbh, Garp almost lives vicariously through Luffy. Granted he wants to teach Luffy some discipline, but at the end of the day he’s proud of how much his grandson has grown, especially since he was the one to make Luffy so tough. As for the color difference, it likely stems from Luffy’s mother.

you are right, in the anime, we are a lot more attached to the characters... and they are a lot more attached to each other. so now you know Monkey D. Garp and Monkey D. Luffy. :D we only found that out WAAAAAY later in the anime. Each crew kinda has their own theme. my guess is Luffy's crew is about following your dreams. Buggy's is a circus crew... you'll get to know others. bear in mind... my info is based off the first 360ish episodes, i havent seen them all 😅

So the thing about Zorro was he showed impeccable swordsmanship. Which led to Mihawk, ironically, sparing his life, because he was ready to die. At the point he put his sword away Zorro knew he was not going to win this. He was so completely outclassed that fighting further had no point, and having challenged Mihawk to a duel to the death, surrender and retreat were not options. So what Zorro did was both acknowledge the man’s complete and total dominance of the fight by putting his sword away, but nevertheless, faced him as a warrior, ready to accept the consequences. The appropriate way for a warrior to die is on his feet, facing his opponent: “Wounds on the back are a swordsman’s greatest shame.” He didn’t want to die, but he was going to die, so he’d do it with dignity. And seeing and understanding this, his opponent decided it was too soon to cut down the promising youth. Not that he could let him off unscathed, mind. That blow was mortal, but Mihawk was very precise on just how mortal it was. It was one that could be survived with a firm constitution and assistance (which he knew Zoro would get). Anything less would have been an insult or worse: pity(and Zoro would have absolutely taken it that way). But Zoro can truthfully say the dual ended with a killing blow he was fortunate enough to live through.

Garp is such a complex character (who, like Luffy, loves his food 😂) and honestly one of the best characters!! I wish they gave him more depth but they did a good job so far! Garp is actually such a great guy ❤ he is the LEAST shady of the marines. It's actually the Marines as a whole that are super corrupt and they do work with pirates (or "ex" pirates...). It's very complicated :')

The live action made Zoro and Nami much closer than they were in the manga/anime. Even tho everyone says "The creator said no romance between the crew members" it's not really true since he just dodged the question. I do believe that there'll be no romance until endgame but after that I can see pairings from within the crew. Especially Luffy and Nami since they have so much hints and evidence

Zoro's friend's death was so sudden that shook Zoro. Zoro decided he will spent his life with pride and to fulfil that promise as he can literally just die by any accident so trying to live just for the sake of it is useless. He decided a goal and decided he is ready to give his life for this goal.

The Live Action makes it seem like Zoro and Kuina just started dualing. The source makes it clear that she has beaten him thousands of times and he has not beaten her a single time. At one dual a day, they've been training together for many many years. Zoro is a 'special' guy, and I suspect he connected with Kuina first as a target, but then as a person with similar drive as him. I don't think he connects well with those that don't have that kind of ambition, which is why, in the source, he takes a liking to Luffy so quickly. Luffy as a similarly insane ambition and a willingness to put his life on the line to achieve it.

You guys should definitely start the anime, I loved the Netflix show, but the anime is on a whole other emotional roller coaster. They rushed a lot of important stuff on the Netflix and didn't give real emotions. For example on this fight with Mihawk Vs Zoro, the fight was much more intense and Zoros speech at the end really gives a promise to Luffy. I really recommend starting the anime.

also in the anime, zoro's mind was blown even in the very first sword clash, like "is such thing even possible/exist??", he was very shocked (that first attack supposed to be with 3 sword called onigiri one of his stronger and fav technique). so he was too shocked to even say "got u on the run huh?" lol. also in the anime after he did his secret/ultimate tech/ougi, mihawk didnt wait for zoro and about to finish him (zoro still facing away from mihawk) and zoro turn to mihawk with open arms, leaving mihawk confused like "what are you..." then the rest goes like in the live action, for context haha. so it was a bit more clearer in the anime, and no zoro isnt suicidal lol

Zorro doesn't want to die. The problem is, he initiated a duel and explicitly stated that it would be fought to the death. Therefore, after he loses, it is impossible to ask the other side for mercy, and he can only give his life to the other side. These are the rules of the duel, and the honor of the swordsman.

There are basically 4 kinds of powers in One Piece: 1) You inherit it through your blood line. Luffy has his incredible strength and his need to eat constantly from his family (i.e. his Grandfather) 2) Devil Fruit can give you random powers. 3) Weapons. You can develop crazy powers through training with weapons (Zoro, Mihawk) 4) Haki. This is magical power. It has to be learned and mastered. Mihawk has Haki and can make his weapons into black blades that are indestructible and can project energy. Shanks used Haki to turn back the sea beast. Luffy has 1 and 2 and eventually gets 4. He also uses his fists as weapons so he technically has all 4. Making him nearly godlike later in the series.

Mihawk is a glimps of what the top power level should be now in OP series. He and luffy's granpa Garp, to be exact. And both of them is just so strong they dont need Devil Fruit to be one. Frankly, zoro fighting him is like a lvl 1 hero trying to take down the final boss. 😅 It does test his resolved in the end though. Also, in OP world, you dont always need the fruit to become strong. Zoro is the obvious example.
