This habit keeps you from ranking up

A common habit for players is to walk away from pressure. Not blocking low on wakeup and walking yourself to the corner does your opponent job for them and prevents you from ranking up.

@@_r0n1n15 It's because people are trying to whiff punish an attempted throw or button press. Sometimes by standing there, you give the opponent an opportunity to randomly throw you, basically making you unsafe by forcing yourself to guess when YOU have the advantage. You're trying to get a CC opportunity when you shimmy an stuff but yeah, no harm in sitting there after taking a meaty that is blocked. The pros give the impression that you should always be shimmying.

i remember when i used to back up a lot and play super defensive. I can't tell you how many matches i gave my opponent space and got put in the corner. Sometimes, I've had a significant life lead on my opponent and decided to back up and be calm, while playing defensive. Sadly a lot of those matches have led to my opponent getting an absurd comeback on me. Lesson learned, take up as much space as i can from my opponent, so that way they can take risk and make mistakes on their own.

I remember an episode of excellent adventures where Justin Wong told Gooteks playing as Rose against a Geif that he was to treat a specific tree in the background as though it were the edge of the world. Gooteks had walked himself to the corner and got mixed up in the first round. Justin was like you are not walking back past this tree. Throw your soul sparks, if he tries to walk in use roundhouse, if he jumps DP, or AA button. But fundamentally you're not moving from this spot as a way of training Gooteks not to do this. It worked.

There's a lot of rose-colored glasses out there for SF4 these days. People forget the unblockables and vortexes built on multiple layers of offensive option selects. Getting knocked down meant you just lost in a lot of matchups.
@dimex3362
@dimex3362 4 жыл бұрын
inlemur sf4 certainly had its fair share of shit. But it had 2 major saving graces: 1. Not all matchups were vortex heavy and the ones that werent tended to be some of the best streetfighter ever available... watch daigo versus valle ryu mirror. Not everything was fuerte versus fuerte. 2. Your skill could still outshine a vortex. Most vortex characters had sub par footsies and neutral and generally needed to beat you at neutral to get the party started, which keant alot of times you could beat them without them even having a chance to win. In sf5 the game plays great, when punk is playing or when its some player in the top 500 online (or tournie) rankings. But outside of that the game is a shitshow. Also brian is disengenuous in his statement. People arent watching “karin” win, they are watching punk win. The dude has amazing wiff punishes no matter what character hes using. Outside of punk no karin was getting top 8. And dont mention bonchan or phenom.. neither was doing anything with her before copying punks style and neither can with her solely.
@AnyDudeUSA

@@dimex3362 You hit the nail on the head there about character choices. The worst thing you can do for yourself if you want to win competitively is choose a character based on how someone else uses them. If you do that, the best you can ever do is be a good copy. You want to command a character where you can say "I did that."
@Dale967

He lost the first game against that Karin but won all sets(4 in total was it?). Once he figured the Karin's tendencies and the Karin didn't adapt it was over. Platinum players generally have a pretty good idea how their own characters work but they are lacking in match-up knowledge and they don't really adapt mid session. So occasionally you can see a platinum player getting away with a win the first time they play someone that's better than them if they just happen to know a little about the match-up. But as they continue to play against the better player they will do worse and worse.
