Many comedy shows they will hand pick certain people to "upgrade" their seats to front row. I know Robin Williams always used to make sure that back row purchasers got upgraded to front row because those are the true fans - the ones that are buying seats that you need binoculars for! Nobody's buying crappy seats like that if they aren't a huge fan. I would guess with Shulz shows it's similar - they look for very diverse and "interesting" people to sit up front so that he can feed.
