they might not be that rich in money, but they rich in culture and community these areas. i realised this after I migrated to NZ from sri lanka. lived in otara for a bit. compared to other parts of auckland, sure the crime rate might be high (i dont think its high now as it used to be) ....but there is unity and resilience in the community..the cultural vibrancy is refreshing, and people who look out for each other and got their neighbour's backs, the volunteering and youth developments and the civic engagement of these support networks and preservation of traditions...is something unique to remember and be positive about. thanks for showing the good side of Otara..which is like 95% of it

Nice to see you guys visit my hometown. I’ve been here since birth, 26 years, and like you’ve said there are bad people everywhere but personally I’ve never run into any or seen any here. I believe Otara’s bad rep is from pre-Y2K but bad things may of course happen every now and then. I use to walk down here all the time with my primary school and college friends to stop off at the bakeries or library and I never felt unsafe as an Asian passing person. My mum and a lot of family members are white and they’ve never had a bad experience and my mum often goes here weekly for cheaper groceries. Definitely sad you guys couldn’t catch the Saturday market, I have a lot of fond childhood memories of waking up early Saturday morning and walking down to the market with my grandpa to buy fresh produce and food from the stalls, it was always a great vibe and I looked forward to it every week.

Otara is lovely if you mind your business like any other suburb, it has one of the most popular weekly markets in Aotearoa which attracts people from all over Auckland and the locals are down to earth and will help you if you need a hand. Otara is a great place and holds alot of culture. Its the very few gangs that make it feel as though it is dangerous due to the types of crime they commit. It's really a minority group, however. I'm from the South Island of NZ and visited the Otara markets 25 years ago. I got more than a few sideways glances from the locals lol probably more due to the fact that I was sporting a mohawk and wearing steel cap Doc Martens boots. First interaction I had was with a guy trying to sell me drugs 🤣 Loved it though. I managed to pick up a few bargins then tucked into some delicious island cuisine - Chop Sui, Taro and Palusami 👌 So good!
