This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

@@Yusuf_K7 Yeah, he was quite the enigma. Conquered and withdrew from the world of competitive chess within the span of 2 years, considering chess unworthy of serious pursuit. To me this makes his achievements even more remarkable; what legacy might he have left if he DID commit to it seriously (given worthy opponents)? As for the mental issues, it wouldn't be the first time "genius" and "madness" were seen cavorting together...

Harrwitz is stronger than Barnes that much is clear. What makes the Morphy saga come to life is demonstrating that Morphy wasn't playing street cafe woodpushers. These guys were tough. It makes it all the more interesting to gain this knowledge in the story. If we only saw the games where Morphy was in the zone, what kind of a story is that?

Lol . Just because you saw two games of harrwitz this doesn't make him stronger than Barnes. You are just biased because you saw his two winning games, while the first was fixed and requested from Morphy to play an opening of his choice. Spoiler alert he lost the next five games and retired from the match, when the goal was to score seven wins. Also , it's obvious Morphy underestimated harrwitz and didn't perform well, while in the first game Morphy played bad and harrwitz played average to good defensive moves. if you like numbers Barnes has even better score against Morphy than harrwitz.

To me after 3 games Harrwitz seems the strongest opponent in the "Morphy saga" so far. He doesn't make mistakes, he doesn't push attacks that are unrealistic, he doesn't fall into traps. No brilliant moves, but the normal moves are flawless. It takes a brilliant game to beat him.

Many years ago, my buddies would come over once a week for card games. One day, before the get-together, I used my scanner and a bit of software to make a specially labeled treat for my guests. At a critical moment of the card game, just when I knew I was about to deal death to everyone, I reached into the cupboard, pulled out a can opener, and put a specially prepared can of Campbell's "Whoop-Ass" soup on the table. It got a big laugh, and eased their embarrassment somewhat at losing to the guy who was normally the worst card player in the room.

13:46 rook to c8 would also check + deflect the queen with the rook, but yeah rook check on g1 is simple and the natural way to go about for sure. u just said the only move so i had to say this

I think Morphy was hustling Harrwitz. We've seen this sort of story in the movies many times. A stranger walks into the local billiards hall, and offers to play a friendly game with the local expert. The expert has to work at it a little bit, but he beats the stranger. Then the stranger offers to play for a small wager, the expert ups the ante, and by the end of the evening the stranger walks out with a few hundred in his pocket. This is what Morphy is about to do to Harrwitz -- even spotting him the first game of the match, just to make it more interesting, and therefore more crushing in the end.

At minute 13:33 why isn't it possible to play Rc8 + and if the king moves you capture the Queen or if the Queen takes you capture the rook (Qxh2)? This way you ' d come up with an extra knight @agadmator

Is there any movie for Morphy like there is one for fischer?.
@SmilingIbis
@SmilingIbis 3 жыл бұрын
A script would have to fill in a lot of blanks about Morphy's life and motivations. Much of the official literature on Morphy sounds like a lot of potential baloney. Fischer's life is much more documented and easier to turn into a movie.

At 13:49 Rc8 looks like a much better move than Rg1, in as much as when the smoke clears white is up a knight and some pawn. What am I missing here?

13:38 I dont think its only one good move. He could have also played rook to c8 with check. Black has to capture with the queen, and white replies with queen captures rook on h2, because its no longer protected by the black queen. :)

Antonio (or Agad )Your content has been awesome but i think you are a bit too kind to Morphy. Yes he is awesome but maybe he just meg his most feared player. Like Nakamura has Anand or Shaq has Big country, Djokovic has Kyrgios. He might have just met his most feirce enemy. Anyways Great content Keep it up!!!
