Kudos to you for allowing your daughter to help with the day to day chores. Many parents wouldn't let their kids handle boiling hot water and glass jars etc. My kids are mostly grown but I let them try everything on their own, great learning experience without parents constant fussing. Makes strong and independant adults. Great job!

Al, if you want wood chips...man I got tons, and more scheduled to be delivered at 7 tomorrow morning. Morgan has an awesome barn cat video too! His videos have been a great help to when we adopted 3 cats from the animal shelter. For the Elderberries, I got hooked by watching a video from Off Grid with Doug and Stacy where they introduced us all to Terry Durham from River Hills Harvest. That guy is an Elderberry expert. I see him as the Elderberry King! Ha Ha. Great guy too. Thanks for sharing Al!

You may have pumpkins, and squash, if you gave the pig's any after you decide to let them become breakfast grow all in there. I'm sure you've watched the living traditions homestead. Well after their pig's got a certain size they decided to move them to another spot and where they were previously lots of squash, cucumbers, and other thing's grew all over the place because they fed them those thing's all the time. You may have pumpkins or squash if you feed them some, but not sure about the beets since they don't have any seed's. Just thought I'd throw that in there. That was really nice of him to bring you all those tree's.

Nice of Morgan to give you cuttings and a helping hand. I also like Hazelnut for NH.Your outdoor kitchen is awesome! Wish we had built one in the 70's, when we were in our twenties. Sometimes made unnecessary work for ourselves, but we had a blast learning how to become more self-sufficient! Thankful for our seasoned farm neighbors, who pointed us in the right direction! No U-Tube back then... just learn by the seat of your pants! I'm about to use U-Tube, a neighbor's input and "Sewing for Dummies", to help me learn how to sew :-). P.S - Made a cheese cake in the Instant Pot. Have a great day!

The weather you described reminded me of my time in Colorado. Wake up to snow, play basketball at lunch (~70F), sleet before dinner, take a warm after dinner stroll and finally head to bed with hail hitting the roof. I was always sick as I always felt over or under dressed for the weather.

i make refrigerator beets with onion, we love them, cant keep them around the house for long! yum! my grandmothers used to can, i remember her putting wax on top of her plum jam. when does the wax get used since i noticed you didnt use any. i remember my mom and aunt going out to the apricot orchards in San Jose, CA they were allowed to pick everything left on the trees for really cheap. this must have been around around 1959/1960. Anyway they made apricot jam the next day and that has been my favorite ever since. They also went and picked black walnuts one year, divided those up amongst the family. We had walnuts for years! Now all the orchards are gone, the farms too. People had horses, sold eggs, honey and fresh produce from roadside stands. Now its all houses, strip malls & traffic congestion. Where “silicon valley” now sits. I miss those days, can’t wait to get out of here.
@noneofbizorjuliejt64666 жыл бұрын
wax is not recommended any longer because it doesn't give a good enough seal and really it was only used with jams because with the high sugar content wax was considered good enough. wax wasn't used with beets to my knowledge.

He He He... Moose still cracks me up, every single time! "Squeak-a-squeak-squeak"!! Seriously start chuckling every time I hear him. If you are going to go on fueling things like the excavator, you should get yourself one of those cheap powered pumps like on Pure Living For Life. Although you do have a knack for making less mess than most people. LOL I wonder if that wet area is an old stream bed, or has a high water table in that area? (Maybe indication of a "seep spring".) What is that music @ 10:40? Sounds like they are saying "Hang your head"...

@danbreedchain27916 жыл бұрын
It's a smaller tree but I am surprised at how many nuts it produced this year. Most went to the stupid red squirrel, but I was able to snag about 40 or so that I'm germinating. Guess is 100ish nuts per year for a 5 inch trunk.

Butternut is in decline here in Vermont - get half grown and die off - so sad. Great to see you planting Chestnuts! They all died off years ago around these parts - I assume those you planted are resistant. Elderberry are so prolific - mine sucker and I replant suckers. Make your own elderberry syrup for winter. Great to see your farm growing!
@drekfletch6 жыл бұрын
Butternuts are declining here in NH, too. Butternut canker is all over the northeast, though there are breeding programs going on that collect from the few that seem to resist it. The one's Al planted are, they said, American-Chinese hybrids. The chestnut blight affects American chestnuts, but not the Chinese. The only problem is that the Chinese species is a smaller tree with less desirable nuts. There are hybridizing programs, but also testing some with genetic modifications that bring in the resistance without losing so much of the benefits.
@gelwood996 жыл бұрын
The old gentleman that I bought my elderberry bushes from told me the best way to make a tincture is to fill a quart jar with clean berries and add half a quart of vodka. Cover and let stand on a dark corner for 6 weeks. 1 teaspoon a day will keep you from all those winter colds that harass you. Prevent instead of treat! He suggested 1/2 in the am and 1/2 at evening.

Hey Al , Gina and Olivia, what did you do with all your tomatoes? I only saw you have BLTs that one day with your friends.
@suemcfarlane41995 жыл бұрын
I gave our pigs a whole lot of tomatoes and they sprouted in our pigs manure pile where I stored the dirty bedding out of their sty they grew really well all on their own I thought the fresh pig manure would be way to strong as it had not composted down at all it did latter and I used it a lot in my garden as compost we bedded our pigs in a comcrete sty on rice hulls which were very cheap the sty was on the proprerty already and were not our design but they had yards built off the covered sty’s and really did a good job of offering the pigs shade which was more useful here in Australia than keeping them out of any cold weather we ran electric fences off the small yards so they had free choice to go out and graze or stay in the shade of their pens

excavator are great. haha what I love is the RAW POWER they have. I'll bet the one you have with as much as it can lift pull shove dig and everything, probably has an engine that puts out less horsepower than my motorcycle. and that's pretty amazing. and! when you consider all it can do, gets more work done than my truck on a smaller tank of fuel. 😎
