Watching this video and others of people restoring stone buildings as they laboriously remove cement rendering, it's apparent that many in the past thought they were doing a good thing by applying a waterproof layer on the walls. They didn't realize that they were creating a moisture trap that would doom the walls to damp, deterioration and mold. Perhaps, in the quiet of the night, you will be able to hear the sigh of relief from those old stones!
@MAKEDOGROW Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately there’s still quite a lot of people that think cement is the answer (cheap and fast). Maybe with more people using lime the word will spread

The old stone/rock walls look fantastic & after repointing probably deserve to be still seen. Perhaps consider for future such projects covering the lower portions with some plaster etc. to give you flat surfaces to work with but after repointing build a framework above the dado & insert a glass or Perspex screen so that the old style stone /rocks can be an arty type feature?

Well, when I see the power lines .... I love the German system where electrical wiring on walls (under the plaster) can only be done vertically or horizontally. If you want to drill into the wall later, you can very easily avoid damage to the wires. But .... I start sweating just watching. Good work.

I like the idea of you both turning it back into kinda how it was. Great find on the pipes too of when they were put into the home too. I hope you have some rest before the hauling up the floorboards etc. See you both in the next video.*

I can tell you from experience. My grand parents farm house maybe 1-2 hr north of you and then my parent's home built in early 70s FRED FLINTSTONE STYLE ( STONE, CONCREET SLABS, LADILLOS for interior sepatation) had massive humidity issues. After installing a dehumidifier and realizing the amount of water coming out , GALLONS , GALLONS DAILY non stop, we ripped out all the walls , put up a vapor barrier, 2×4 framing against the vapor barrier wall wich allowed us to run new electric and plumbing thru the studs then ROCKWOOL insulation all around (Water proof, fire proof , sound proof product ) then 1/2 inch sheet rock all around... The difference is night and day especially in the winters. If you want to use the ORIGINAL WAY , the ONLY WAY to get the humidity out is to do like my grandmother/ mother usto do. OPEN UP all windows and doors to air out (dry) the house.. evey sunny day. OR, install dehumidifiers with drainage to the outside. Youll never keep up emptying them manually. As a child I remember my grandmother lighting her big WOOD STOVE , it was on all day and it would dry the interior of the house in the winter.

What a curious place for stairs, but I gather it must have worked for the original owners. Revise, review, plans altered. That's almost expected when taking on someone else's work. Are you going to use the same finishing methods, hemp, etc I love those stone walls, but they're definitely not insulating. A lot of work, but so much "easier" with power tools. Looking forward to seeing how you design the new room. 🇨🇦
