When we renovated our 200-year-old house, my father often said, "It's an old house; it's not supposed to be level," and "That's what gives the the place character." If everything was level and plumb and square the house would look too new. And if frustrations cause you to lose your marbles, you'll know which end of the room to find them. ;-)

Congratulations on your 4 not-your-kittens! Good of you to take those little ones in. I also admire hugely the degree to which you're willing to change your initial plans and implement those changes as you go along, where needed or when some new bit of information prompts a rethink, regardless of whatever hard work is involved, all while keeping your senses of humor/humour and positive attitudes.

Good luck with the kittens, they can and will be a hand full. We had to recue 4 tom kittens this year due to mums abandoning them. They also had a cardboard box for a while until they decided that they wanted out. It was a thick sturdy box (the type that eggs are packed in). They first tried to climb out, but that proved too hard so they chewed and clawed a hole which allowed them to escape. They are still indoors but we cannot leave any type of box laying around as the 4 of them shred boxes for dinner. Can't wait till they are 6 months old, down the vets, get the snip and release. I have a bet with my wife and I think that they will be house cats forever. Please feel free if you want any more cat's/kittens as I have 12 indoor cats and around 30 outdoor ones. A great job on the floor, if a jobs worth doing its worth doing it well. I love the idea of reinstating the staircase, I can't remember if you were going to introduce a ground floor to upstairs internal staircase as I think that it could be useful. As an afterthought if your little ones get under the weather, I highly recommend Hills prescription diet A/D, it comes in a small tin that you should be able to get from your vets, it has saved many a cat here. Thanks for posting

Now that you've moved to working upstairs, can you build a chute than can reach from the upstairs window to the bed of the truck? That should save carrying 10,000+ buckets of material down the stairs. Good luck with the upstairs repairs..

You guys are doing a great job, I look forward to seeing how it goes on. If you need information for the growth of the kittens, write me privately, I have been a nurse for orphans kittens in Italy for many years. Know that they are 5 full weeks old as their ears are completely up and they don't have to drink milk anymore, it's just bad for them at this age (it's not mom's milk), they just need a good quality complete wet food 😉

I recently put a new osb mezzanine in for storage in our tall stone barn. The joists were bowed and twisted. I gave up trying to figure out how to shim it before laying down the osb. Finally I just set the panels, measured the gaps, and then measured, made/fitted the shims. That was indeed easier, at least for my project. I don't envy the kittens but glad you're saving them. There isn't enough rescues in Portugal and many animals in need.

I recommend the next time you need to level up a floor, you can sister new joist onto the old ones. This is a standard method my company uses when we renovate historic homes. You should use the Simpson ledger lock screws when attaching the new joist.

Sister beams are often the way to go with crooked beams. New level beams that get attached next to the old. They would be just above the old beams and the floor gets attached to the sister beams rather than the old. The issue is that they will be visible below and I don’t know if you are planning on any insulation going in the ceiling to hide them.
@LCamp-cr7fs Жыл бұрын
I heartily agree with that. You can train them too, believe it or not. With adult rescues you inherit all previous mishandling.
@poodlegirl55 Жыл бұрын

the OSB will be visible as well, which is much more unattractive. I assume they're sealing up that ceiling/floor interface
@MAKEDOGROW Жыл бұрын
We considered this approach, and other than a lot more timber, it means the weight of the floor goes on the sistered timbers which transfers to the fixings. The current beams are chestnut which is a wonderfully hard timber amply able to take the weight across the span and we’d lose that benefit if we sistered (almost would be better to just put new joists in supported on the stone walls)

Got to see you have something to move onto that’s different to the floor downstairs. Its slope will be part of its character but I understand why getting things level will improve comfort when living in a property compared to just a holiday home. Pu expanding glue will really help here. It will help to even things out and stop creaking floors in the future.
