Record companies need to stop 'lying' to us.
Metallica, Paul McCartney and MANY OTHER huge artists need to stop advertising their vinyl as Limited Edition when it clearly isn't! But they won't (especially McCartney ;) ).
We need honest advertising. As a record / vinyl collector… we don’t need to be fooled into buying special editions, coloured vinyl… we’re up for it! So stop the BS!
Tell me what you think.

The main problem is “ collectors” who are really “investors”. The hobby of collecting in most instances has been ruined by people who are not interested in the hobby at all, they are interested in making money. If humans were not so obsessed with money, none of this “limited edition”. shit would exist.

The irony is all the investor collectors these days means, in most cases, the limited edition copies will rarely be worth a significant premium because so many investors have pristine copies. Back in the 60s nobody thought like that so if you have a pristine first edition of Please Please Me you are in the money or, to a lesser extent, Sgt Pepper but in 50 years there will be thousands of pristine copies of the latest releases.

I used to work at the pressing factory that produced this record. Before Metallica bought into the company last year I helped with the And Justice For All box set a few years before. Unfortunately the company was toxic and I had to leave. They also kept dodging employee requests for a copy of the box set we busted out asses on for months. I am sure Metallica would have liked to know that. I heard eventually they gave copies to a few employees.

Coloured vinyl have been used as a selling point for a long ling time. But what's really got me now, is Taylor Swift releasing her new album with different bonus track this is next level must have. In the 90s CD singles had time restraints on them, when labels started doing part 1,2,3 etc which added up to sales relating to charting. Old tricks, re-hashed.

Reissues are good. Remasters not so much. I also don't like it when they change the artwork or layout when they reissue an album, unless the new artwork or layout is actually great. Remastering is now the only way an artist can gain more control over their music and sales. They can renegotiate their points with the distribution companies. A limited run that isn't numbered is immediately suspect. The real thing that bugs me, though, is every retailer having an exclusive edition of any given record in a different colorway. Well looking at more niche genres, limited really does mean limited. My favourite music of all time is Black Metal and Funeral Doom, sometimes the special coloured vinyl versions are only limited to 30-100. Depending on the band, if they're small, sometimes even the regular black version is just as limited. Though obviously the bigger bands will be in production a lot more, but still far less than more mainstream genres.

Red vinyl, bonus tracks, expanded edition, yellow vinyl, splatter vinyl, box sets with books,...etc. It's not about the music, it's about owning it. That's why musicians drive expensive cars and live in villas, while the fan drives a Nissan and lives like chickens in a pen. Examples? A couple days ago I went to a very interesting record and music electronics type place. Seeing all the old vinyl records was an interesting thing. Seeing also the repackaged albums that were so blatantly labeled in ways that made the potential buyer feel that they had to “buy it right now!” was the reminder of why I won’t be buying such things. I’m old. I have LPs I bought new in the 70s and even the 80s. In my collection I have some stuff also from garage sales, pawn shops, thrift stores etc. Also being an old (vintage) guy I remember very well the days when CDs began taking over the market. Claiming to have absolute pure sound. At that time, circa ‘85ish, I didn’t have any money to spend on CDs, all my money went to beer and I important stuff. I already had in excess of 5-600albums. My friends that did have the cash, all rushed out and bought whatever CDs were being sold. Many were just reprints of Zeppelin and such. They hey also had the money to afford a CD player. One and all, skipped as bad or worse than a turntable. Skipped, and chattered and were mostly just not too impressive. But the real immediate thing that was missing was he artwork. Shitty tiny reproductions of the art that often was what made buying a new Aerosmith or Rush album so special! But my actual reason for this response is about the collectors edition nonsense. That store had an 18 piece vinyl collection of the first Rolling Stones albums. Up to Let It Bleed. There was a last title, something I’ve never heard of, so it must’ve been the presumed gem or something to be extra special. Also, colored vinyl. A boxed package and so forth. The store owner was polite, and got it down for me to see up close. His sudden reaction of surprise was noted: “oh this is a limited edition number” xxx/1 billion or some bogus number, probably actually 1000. All I wanted to see was which album was supposedly the 18th. The Stones have a lot of records. I know, up until Tattoo You I have every single one, vinyl, most also on CD. and nearly all on a hard drive in varying compression rates, depending on it I ripped them from CD or LP myself, or were given them along the way. Also in my collection are about 100 Zeppelin boots. Some genuine forgeries from disreputable venders in the 70s, most from “reputable” pirates that scored original tape recordings that knew someone at a record pressing factory. These can be very well made or truly shoddy, but they are in fact proper limited pressings. At least in the sense that they weren’t mass produced by Atlantic or Warner or whatever, with the art department marketing team crating this shit to mislead the morons with more cash than sense. Anything mass produced and called limited edition is simply marketing. That Stones box set was upwards of $1000 I believe. I should’ve checked the price. My last purchase of Physical Graffiti, new, on vinyl set me back around $15 probably. I have the original double boxed jewel case CD set, I think I paid around 20 in the 90s. My remastered version was about $20 as well. Each has its pros and cons. The heavy vinyl versions of such albums seem to be a pretty solid choice, though I don’t own any. That store was selling old copies of that record for $59! They were presumably in very good condition. I didn’t inspect them. Mine are all in fully intact shape, original inner sleeves etc. I’m just bragging at this point in this comment I’m still observing your frozen image of you displaying the Metallica black album. Which brings me to Metallica. Lars is no slouch when it comes to merchandising his brand. I’ve learned that there are easily THOUSANDS of Metallica licensed products. To my way of thinking they are worth less than the plastic they are made from simply because they were made officially. Lars is a marketing tool that other tools can use to further their brand. A complete dick. No one in the old school Metallica vein of followers should be particularly proud of his two faced BS. They made their mark using pirated content from the start. I love their work, at least most of it. I recently preordered the ‘72 cd and was stoked to hear it. But when I heard it, I wasn’t remotely impressed after I heard the entire thing. Every track seemed to be the near same thing, just different notes and whatever. None of the song to song massive theme was there. I played that disc 3-4 times in hopes to make it sound better. It just was more of the same. Same for many of their later releases. That’s more than I expected to write. Off my soapbox and I’ll watch the rest of the video

I love McCartney, but his marketing overload needs to stop. People have said they don't think McCartney is the ones making the decisions about the marketing. McCartney would never allow anyone to make any decisions about his finances without his direct input. You're absolutely correct about McCartney producing multiple versions of the same album release to try and reach the top of the charts and make more money than he normally would with a release cashing off of his legacy. The trunk set for his third or fourth version of Egypt Station was the epitome of greed and taking advantage of his fans. In my opinion, it cheapens his legacy. People have purchased his archive collections and are still waiting for albums released in the 70s. He said in an interview that he was disappointed with the sales of the last two. Flowers In The Dirt boxsets had download cards for some materials and not actual physical cds, and his last one, Flaming Pie, had one version that was selling for $400. It was a larger box with an extra print from one of Linda's pictures. A couple of years after the release, the sets were still available on his website. They may still be there. My guess is one of the reasons he has released any additional solo products is because of all of the recent Beatles remixed releases. He knows where the big money comes from and doesn't want to saturate the market too much and not sell as much of his product, which again would decrease his ranking on the charts. He recently released his third version of the original album, Band On The Run from 1974 with an "underdubbed" version. I don't understand all of the different Taylor Swift rereleases and special editions, but I'm not a fan of hers. The bottom line is if these artists release these special editions of the same products with variations of some sort such as every colored vinyl one could possibly imagine, or re-release the same albums remixed and/or added songs it's up to them but I think over time the public will get tired of it and with the case of McCartney tarnish their legacy a bit. It's people's decisions, and as long as they're buying, the artists/record labels are going to churn them out.

I have a hard time getting upset by a lot of this. Metallica has kept the price down on these Wal-Mart exclusives here in the States - and I took my time snatching all of them up. Was even able to grab the Garage Days colored vinyl from a few years ago in the used market for regular price - still sealed (BTW, that was NOT one of the Wal-Mart exclusives). But....they did the exact same thing with the second half of their catalog in 2021/2022 and those editions are nowhere to be found anymore. Truly limited, it seems. Weird.

If that was the blood record edition I think based on what they’ve said on socials, it’s because they allocate your number when buying it to help track and stop people buying then reselling straight away, if they see you advertise that number on eBay or whatever with a huge markup they ban you from buying again.

Quickly: calling something limited. 500K is gold. Thats a big big seller. It used to be the best of the best. These days it’s almost enough to make the label consider the act as relevant. Platinum is a million. No small feat. Limiting a unit to be fobbed onto the gullible fan should mean 1K as a proper actual number. But I am certain that if 1000 units are shifted, another 10k will be pressed. The likelihood of two units with same number meeting is infinitely unlikely, unless they are ALL a copy of each other. As my example. I have a black porcelain statue of Led Zeppelins Presence monolith. I first saw one when the first time I met Roger Fisher at his studio in 1996 I believe. I saw it and was blown away! Before so much as stared at it in immediate proximity (he had it displayed on his mixing desk I think) I had to ask him about it. His story, being that he’s, in my mind, almost as godhead as Mr Jimmy himself, well, not really, but Heart (the first legit albums) are the only band that has the highest integrity as a Zeppelin esque band that’s ever existed. As demonstrated when you watch Anne and Nancy perform for the gods themselves at that prestigious event. But Roger told me his story about the statue. I spent the next few years, this was the early days of WWW and regular people getting onto the net. I scored myself a slightly blemished Presence monolith. With a hand scribed number of /1000 units. (243/1000) I don’t absolutely know if it’s genuine. But it is to me. All the etching from the mold is sharp and precise, so it doesn’t have the indicators of being mass produced. I have SEEN actual real ones, but they weren’t able to be held in hand. Aside from Roger’s, which given his stature in rock musics hierarchy I am confident he has a real one with a very low number. I wish we were still friends. We skied together a few times. But he was more into boarding, and I broke an ankle the following season and fell out of touch.

I began buying vinyls because I am a huge Vangelis fan (I am also from Greece) . I bought some really limited pressings of his work (like 500 in total). The reason I buy vinyls is not to listen to them because I firmly believe that digital audio is much better than vinyl but rather support the artist. Besides vinyls have a lot more real estate for things that are usually hidden in a CD jewel case or nonexistent in digital streaming formats like photos and booklets.
@dinnerwithgreedo

Thanks for your comment. It has got the thinking, that’s for sure. Digital audio is much better in many ways and half the time I’ll listen to that over the ‘fuss’ (it isn’t much fuss but I’m lazy) of playing it on a vinyl record. BUT when I want to truly immerse myself in the music… I go to vinyl. So I don’t really disagree with what you say BUT they both have strengths. And yes, support the artist, coz let’s face it, digital music is usually streamed or illegally downloaded.

You make many valid and sensible points in this vid, but there's one big problem, us the consuming public and our behaviors as such. You can ask for businesses to change marketing terms, to be more "honest", but as long as you have the attitude that you'd still buy it anyways if they did, as long as these lame, tired practices they engage in, you know advertising something as Limited, Ultimate, Special, or Anniversary edition, net positive results from their perspective, these companies are still going to continue on with these tactics. Why not if they continue to work? They work because we, the purchasing public allow ourselves to fall for them, to be gullible. I whole heartedly agree with the overall points you made, but, and speaking as someone with almost 30 years in various levels of Retail Management, if you or I are hoping for them to change their approach to us, then we're in for a great deal of disappointment. The business is operating from a profit mindset pure and simple, which has nothing unfortunately, to do with anything near integrity, honesty, and respect for the consumer. As long as they can dangle this stuff in front of us with the tired methods of hype they use and they get a response, they're just going to continue doing it, because from their perspective it works. It is our fault as consumers not the companies for all we see and experience with this garbage, sadly. We need, all of us as consumers, to have stronger self and impulse control. We need to learn not to jump every time something comes out with the outsized hype surrounding it and just ignore it.The only way to get the attention of a business is their pocket books, that's the only weakness they have, the only thing that hurts them. As long as they have in their minds proven results and these days any number of people on a variety of social media platforms, like this one, hyping up these things, which for them is basically free advertising, we're going to keep seeing and having to deal with this stuff as consumers. Solid points though in the vid.

This, unfortunately, is the way EVERY hobby that involves something "collectable" goes. This is the same nonsense that almost destroyed the comic book industry in the 90's. Before too long, they will get the idea that outer cover art variations should be a thing too. "Limited edition Wally World exclusive 3D gold foil hologram with scratch and sniff sausage odor"! It just keeps going until the only buyers left are either wealthy or flippers. The only new vinyl I buy now, are new releases from old bands or something that is too expensive for me to find an original.
